Carpe Idiom @carpeidiom.bsky.social · 04/10/2023As always, please read the entire thread. This isn't about "intensive being helpful" or not, but about the terrible way languages are being ranked in that chart. Of course, intensive or full immersion is great under specific circumstances, but generalizations and creating false expectations aren't. 120
Carpe Idiom @carpeidiom.bsky.social · 04/10/20236) Conclusion: more important than these time criteria is finding the method (or teacher) that fits the learner. There are a myriad of variables that can slow down or speed up your language learning that are NOT related to the supposed or perceived difficulty or easiness of a language. #langsky 0120
Carpe Idiom @carpeidiom.bsky.social · 04/10/20235) Every language journey is unique to the language learner and these comparisons merely serve to make language learners feel defeated, because they can never meet those time frames (for good reasons!) #langsky 1150
Carpe Idiom @carpeidiom.bsky.social · 04/10/20234) What is intended here by "general professional proficiency"? Fluency in reading and writing? Fluency in listening ? Fluency in speaking only? Fluency and proficiency in themselves are open to many interpretations. 1100
Carpe Idiom @carpeidiom.bsky.social · 04/10/20233) There's absolutely no rational explanation for how languages have been grouped here, but maybe more importantly, there's absolutely no comparison possible between individual language learners, even having the same L1, because every language learner comes with a diff set of skills & difficulties. 1100
Carpe Idiom @carpeidiom.bsky.social · 04/10/20232) Many factors other than the first language come into play: - other languages known (have you learned other case, ergative, tone, or agglutinative languages before?) - method(s) used, - avalaible resources (e.g. Mongolian vs Turkish), - emotional bond with the language - etc. #langsky 2160
Carpe Idiom @carpeidiom.bsky.social · 04/10/20231) Hardly anybody studies a language "full-time" (as stated), i.e. 20-30hrs/week. It's not recommended either, bec. your brain needs time to rewire itself. So, brought back to hrs, "30 weeks" = in fact 600-900 hrs, which, at a rate of 3 to 4 hrs/w amounts to 3 to 5 yrs, which seems more realistic. 2170

Carpe Idiom @carpeidiom.bsky.social · 02/10/2023Exactly! So much indifference for these Afghan allies, who risk being tortured to death in their country. It are often the veterans themselves (who have already given so much) who have to go above and beyond to save their former local comrades, because of politics and red tape. 010
