I mean, so what would happen if they DID try to create Plato's Republic? Well, craziness and shenanigans for one thing. I loved this top to bottom, and can't wait to get my mitts on a copy of the next one in the series.

Book #25 - The Just City by @bluejo.eurosky.social Having studied philosophy and classics in school (I even have a degree in one of them) I was a bit scared of reading something that delved deeply into both, but I was delighted by how good the story was.

Book #22 - Inventing the Renaissance by @adapalmer.bsky.social. Dr Palmer gives us not only a history of the Renaissance, but a history of the history of the Renaissance. Not being much of a historian myself, I found this boom amazing for filling in many of the gaps in my understanding.

I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.

A great many white readers in 1967 were not ready to accept a brown-skinned hero. But they weren’t expecting one. I didn’t make an issue of it, and you have to be well into the book before you realize that Ged, like most of the characters, isn’t white.

One major reason that Microsoft was using a definition of intelligence borrowed from white supremacist Linda Gottfredson a couple of years back in their AI documentation is that scientific racists are pretty much the only ones out there pretending that intelligence is well defined and understood

There's a cool site where you can mock up your own Penguin Classics book cover, so I did that with my own books! The Pagan Jones trilogy is coming soon, so voila - the first Cover I Can't use for Book 1.... This is the 1961 Dior suit-dress Pagan is wearing the night the Berlin Wall goes up.
A mock up for a Penguin Classics book cover for The Notorious Pagan Jones featuring a photo of the classic 1961 Dior suit-dress with leather gloves. It is so gorgeous and flattering and practical, made of brown wool, with a wide belt, long sleeves, and a cute bolero jacket attachment. I want one! The protagonist wears this outfit when she's caught on the wrong side the night the Berlin Wall goes up.

I recommend people read this to get a sense of the president's grave cognitive impairment. Trump is either unwilling or unable (or maybe both) to answer the questions he's actually asked, so he just rants and raves while the interviewers do their best to provide structure to his random brain firings

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.
