There’s a lot of talk about how to prepare for economic catastrophe. A big part of that conversation should be developing skills to help others. Especially through care work. The fascist plan is for the overwhelm of those needs to push women out of the workforce because men refuse to step in.

the thing I hate most about that rfk quote is that autistic lives have value and worth and beauty and dignity whether they are able to do the things other people do or not. no one is defined by ability or lack thereof and to frame divergence as lack is monster stuff, utterly godless

People need to be told honestly and clearly that there are massive upheavals in store, of which today’s fires and floods are just the first waves. That coping with them without continuing to make them worse will require massive transformations and sacrifices which will be hard.

N95 masks protect against wildfire smoke, airborne viruses, and more. They are an essential public health tool. Like condoms and many other public health tools, the government should make N95 masks free and easily accessible to the public throughout the year.

You do not want a cannula the size of a small garden hose inserted into your body.

starting an audit at the hospital and the PI was like “you do not have to count a protocol violation if you assess that the patient condition does not require the protocol” and I said “I’m not allowed to assess so I’ll find more violations than anyone else” and she said “yeah”

I am once again promoting my work! Buy it here docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...
A Black woman with a sternal incision and a central line on the right side of her neck, her chest exposed, is worked on/cared for by two gloved hands.

Artist: Eli C. Rice
Materials: On canvas: acrylic paint, paper, colored pencil, yarn, embroidery floss, beading cord, glass beads, sandpaper, jewelry wire, labels for critical care medication lines, sterile wrapping, a droplet mask, synthetic braiding hair, ziploc bag, gloss medium, Gorilla Glue
Social Media: @eliricechad on Instagram

Art Description: At my job in a heart transplant ICU, I bear witness to the haze between life and death, between operating one’s own body and it yielding to the hands of strangers. This piece helped me think about the ways critical care anonymizes, yet exposes, yet uniquely marks a person and subsumes their selfhood into a History of Present Illness. I was also thinking about the Black patients in Chocolate City, more likely to experience poor health and less likely to choose any death except one with full lifesaving measures, and the care workers, fiber craftspeople, and menders of the world, primarily women and those of marginalized genders and often women of color, and the many times we swap one life role for another.

one time at shift change in the CVICU we were doing a seemingly-critical STAT CT but they were actually fine—only a mild injury from accidentally smacking their forearm into the donut of the scanner—and when I called the unit to update they said, “can’t you send ‘em back through to check the arm?”

it’s my job to look for a phone number for a newborn’s primary caregiver for public health follow-up after birth. sometimes, they have no phone number because they came here a few weeks ago to give birth as a non-resident. do I put that in our government records? no!!

I find that, across the board, individuals get heaped with disproportionate amounts of care work the second it's known they'll take it. A bottomless well of need, to put it mildly.

So many people who are incarcerated right now deserve this kind of reasoned defense of their right to freedom, but they lack a powerful parent to intervene on their behalf. Abolition now.

Medical professionals are taught to be deeply biased, and to stigmatize disability. We saw this happen with utilitarian ethics at the height of COVID hospitalizations.

As I push my son in his stroller, getting on and off public transit, I’m reminded of how inequitable the world is for persons with disabilities. We should care about making the world safer for everyone. You don’t have to experience these challenges for them to matter to you.

Not a heart transplant candidate, she was tired of an existence that depended on occasional defibrillation shocks and IV medications that restricted her to the CCU room. She requested that everything be turned off...after a final drink. This prosecco was her toast to life & eternity. #EOLcare

Rotavirus can be lethal. Before the vaccine, rotavirus killed 500,000 children each year across the world. Post vaccine it still causes 200,000 deaths per year worldwide. In the United States, childhood deaths from rotavirus range from 20-40 per year. This child looked like their pH was 6.9

It's also the flip side of mistrusting patients. Until you make getting vaccinated easy AF, people will reasonably decide not to, and blaming them as gullible victims of misinformation will just make the blamer feel better.
