There’s a lot of talk about how to prepare for economic catastrophe. A big part of that conversation should be developing skills to help others. Especially through care work. The fascist plan is for the overwhelm of those needs to push women out of the workforce because men refuse to step in.

the thing I hate most about that rfk quote is that autistic lives have value and worth and beauty and dignity whether they are able to do the things other people do or not. no one is defined by ability or lack thereof and to frame divergence as lack is monster stuff, utterly godless

People need to be told honestly and clearly that there are massive upheavals in store, of which today’s fires and floods are just the first waves. That coping with them without continuing to make them worse will require massive transformations and sacrifices which will be hard.

N95 masks protect against wildfire smoke, airborne viruses, and more. They are an essential public health tool. Like condoms and many other public health tools, the government should make N95 masks free and easily accessible to the public throughout the year.

starting an audit at the hospital and the PI was like “you do not have to count a protocol violation if you assess that the patient condition does not require the protocol” and I said “I’m not allowed to assess so I’ll find more violations than anyone else” and she said “yeah”

I am once again promoting my work! Buy it here docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...
A Black woman with a sternal incision and a central line on the right side of her neck, her chest exposed, is worked on/cared for by two gloved hands.

Artist: Eli C. Rice
Materials: On canvas: acrylic paint, paper, colored pencil, yarn, embroidery floss, beading cord, glass beads, sandpaper, jewelry wire, labels for critical care medication lines, sterile wrapping, a droplet mask, synthetic braiding hair, ziploc bag, gloss medium, Gorilla Glue
Social Media: @eliricechad on Instagram

Art Description: At my job in a heart transplant ICU, I bear witness to the haze between life and death, between operating one’s own body and it yielding to the hands of strangers. This piece helped me think about the ways critical care anonymizes, yet exposes, yet uniquely marks a person and subsumes their selfhood into a History of Present Illness. I was also thinking about the Black patients in Chocolate City, more likely to experience poor health and less likely to choose any death except one with full lifesaving measures, and the care workers, fiber craftspeople, and menders of the world, primarily women and those of marginalized genders and often women of color, and the many times we swap one life role for another.

one time at shift change in the CVICU we were doing a seemingly-critical STAT CT but they were actually fine—only a mild injury from accidentally smacking their forearm into the donut of the scanner—and when I called the unit to update they said, “can’t you send ‘em back through to check the arm?”

I teach math (counting, addition, subtraction, fractions, measuring, precision, accuracy) to adults who wanted a career that didn’t require math (nursing assistant students) and it’s Really Hard

it’s my job to look for a phone number for a newborn’s primary caregiver for public health follow-up after birth. sometimes, they have no phone number because they came here a few weeks ago to give birth as a non-resident. do I put that in our government records? no!!

I don’t even know what specifically you’re referring to well enough to explain it, as explaining it seems important to you. My best spoonfed harm reduction attempt was at the beginning of the thread—it is your “class” interest to throw transfeminine people under the bus to safeguard yourself from

but, if you’re making a sound bite for white tboys, whose biggest egg fear is almost always losing the entitlement to care they once had, you’re going to need a better explanation

the tboys can no longer extract care work (not even from tgirls, they can extract sex tho) in this framing

I expected nursing to be a role trans women took on once they were socializing as a woman, but they were usually closeted/working as men nurses first then left bedside bc of violence

nursing places great value on people who look like they could be the patients’ hot granddaughter and I know trans woman nurses so I expected different results in our survey of trans paid caregiving than we got

it’s not that trans women don’t do care work, but rather that specific care work is transmasculine—it is only given to people who are not (due to transmisogyny) thought to be predators and it masculinizes your gender role. This is part of anti-Blackness and the role of the white Lady

I find that, across the board, individuals get heaped with disproportionate amounts of care work the second it's known they'll take it. A bottomless well of need, to put it mildly.

The point is to explain things to birthday boys in one minute, not to be the most correct. But also, I cannot think of a care work that I don’t do for trans woman more than they do for me—idk if that’s society-wide or just my love of care work though!

I disagree that trans women do more care labor as a group, paid or unpaid, than masculine cafabs. You all are excluded from it and we are forced into it
200 0
carewerk @carewerk.bsky.social · 02/12/2024
these are both true and not at all contradictory. the monstering does not lie in the realm of domestic labor—it’s sexual—and it’s misogynized-on-misogynized violence a la racialized misogyny from white women

carewerk @carewerk.bsky.social · 02/12/2024
yes, explaining to people who experience misogyny and transphobia but aren’t the primary targets of transmisogyny what is different from their experience in the experience of trans women—it’s not being asked to do domestic labor but rather being the “whipping girl”

yes, TERF theyfabs and trans men are Isaac’s typical audience, so I don’t think the domestic labor point would land well

carewerk @carewerk.bsky.social · 02/12/2024
we’re describing the relationship between trans women and trans men here, where I would disagree that the bulk of the domestic and social labor falls on the women
