This is the first time I think that Sound Transit has actually shown a rendering of the infamous "trapezoidal" light rail station at Seattle Center that is expected to be $470 million cheaper than a simple box station, thanks to elimination of a mined section of tunnel.

The MTA is looking for ways to improve passenger wayfinding via improved screens and announcements. Better tech is good on paper, ETA's Blair Lorenzo told the New York Groove, but the real question is if it will actually be used to improve the rider experience, and not simply blast more noise.
Lorenzo noted that any new tech is only as good as the messaging its used for. New tech also opens up the opportunity, of course, for more advertising.

"That would only make the rider experience worse, further pushing people who can to ignore announcements while forcing those who rely on them to sift through an ever-increasing amount of noise," she said. "The best technology in the world is useless if it isn't used in a way that gives riders the information they need while otherwise respecting their time and attention."

The interview with Owen Zidar is particularly interesting. He points out that many of these people who are worth tens or hundreds of millions (and donate to center and right-wing politicians, or ARE center and right-wing politicians) are car dealers. I wonder how many more own drive-thrus.

Sort of insane fact about how broken US urban planning is—America now spends more building *just the lights for roads and highways* than on all subways & ground mass transit combined Spending on roadway *pavement* is 18x transit spending

a political downside of US transportation dominated by personal cars going door to door, is that most middle or upper class Americans avoid ever sharing space with people much poorer than them, except employees.

a screenshot of a post that links to an article about the largest all-electric plane. the post reads "The world's largest battery-electric aircraft flew for the first time on the 12th of August, a 27-minute test flight over upstate New York that cost about five dollars in electricity. Suspending the gas tax is the worst sort of "only billionaires should pay taxes" lib slopulism. Tax billionaires until there aren't any, but to have a functioning state the rest of us are going to pay taxes. Lower diesel prices for grocery delivery by banning diesel sales for personal vehicles.

A lot of neighborhoods in Brooklyn could do something similar, but that street is 25 feet wide, wall to wall. The only streets I've found in Brooklyn that are less than 35 feet are twp alleys around Fulton Ferry: Doughty Street and Elizabeth Place.

It always helps to try to call these people's bluff. "If you're concerned about accessibility, surely you'd be okay with dedicating, say, 8 parking spots on every block to disability placard holders only, right?" I've found they usually aren't willing to do this, which gives the game away.

"Richards said the city would be better served by focusing on more attainable housing goals, like a plan to build 3,000 apartments on the site of the abandoned Flushing Airport." If they do that, they'd better build a train, because it's a 45 minute walk to the 7 train and the buses crawl!
