Suffolk County accounted for a QUARTER of the road fatalities in downstate NY counties, 2020-2024. Now the people in charge who've been building tons of wide roads want to spend millions of tax dollars to widen Sunrise Highway again. Can we stop this? westchester.news12.com/2026/09/15/s...

Today at Summer Streets, the NYPD blocked every crosswalk that a driver could have approached with a staggering quantity of police and Sanitation vehicles. Someone on Reddit said they were told that it was to prevent ramming attacks. That's a laudable goal, but they could have made more gaps!

According to @streetfilms.bsky.social a woman died in a fire in Astoria on Thursday morning. There is no evidence that fire trucks were delayed at all, but on X some crank blamed a bike boulevard, and Joann Ariola amplified that. Then Grok made a fictional summary that a firefighter was killed!
Grok headline: "New York City Firefighter Dies During Fire Response Delayed by Street Obstacles."
Grok summary: A New York City firefighter died while responding to a fire where emergency vehicles encountered obstacles from bike lanes, snow plowing, and parked cars. Critics blame NYC DOT and Transportation Alternatives for street designs hindering FDNY access, while others attribute delays to snow accumulation and vehicles. Councilmember Joann Ariola announced a hearing to review compliance with local Law 6 on firehouse considerations in street planning.

This story is a summary of posts on X and may evolve over time. Grok can make mistakes, verify its outputs.

Top tweets: @JoannAriola32 3h
The dangers faced by the members of @FDNY are enormous and they should not have to be confronted by more obstacles when responding to a fire because @transalt has some sick agenda. Now someone is dead.

That is why I will be hosting a hearing of the Committee of Fire and Show More

Our fears are realized in this video. The Bike Boulevard in Astoria caused an epic disaster last night as emergency vehicles tried to navigate this obstacle course created by @NYC_DOT - Precious time wasted! @JoannAriola32 @Shebbie4nyc @FDNY

We continue to work clearing snow from public areas such as crosswalks, curbs, ramps and corners; Emergency Snow Shovelers will be working through the weekend, too.
Collection continues, and we are prioritizing trash and compost. If possible, please hold your paper and metal/glass/plastic/carton recycling. Collection will be delayed during ongoing snow operations.
Snow melters are continuing to work, and so far, we have melted more than 40 million pounds of snow across our eight snow-melting locations.
AND! Just in case the storm changes track, we are keeping an eye out on the weather this weekend.

Hi, Gaffano, thanks for posting in the community. Glad you got your Bike Angels access restored. Non-members won’t see the option to play Bike Angels, but your points and stats are waiting for you when your membership is restored.

We have started deploying charging stations in NYC, which will improve ebike availability and reduce vehicle drive time associated with manual battery swaps. To support the switch to charging stations, some riders are seeing incentives in their app. For now, Bike Angels won’t see this option.

We appreciate your feedback, which helps us make improvements to the overall experience.

Really hammers home how much of the "subway" in the Bronx is legacy elevated trains from the IRT and the New York, Westchester and Boston Railway. The only Independent System line in the borough is the Concourse Line. They were promised the Second Avenue Subway, but now Hochul wants to turn left.
Crop of the New York City Subway Severe Winter Weather map showing the Bronx. The only lines running are the D to 205th Street, the 2 to Third Avenue/149th Street, the 4 to 149th Street/Grand Concourse and the 6 to Hunts Point Avenue.

Finally: "Customers of a company sign a letter that the company asked them to sign, saying they're afraid the company will pass on a new government tax/fee to them" is not news. it's an anti-government astroturfing campaign. cbs6albany.com/news/local/t...
Fleetworthy has drafted a letter – signed by more than 100 Bestpass customers based or operating in New York – to Governor Kathy Hochul, urging her to take action and pause what they are calling a “backdoor toll hike.”

Fleetworthy CEO Tom Fogarty called the surcharge discriminatory and told CCJ that it disproportionately affects commercial carriers.

“The fact that it is applied to commercial carriers’ volumes, we think is discriminatory,” Fogarty said. “We think there are a number of areas that are unfair and not right, which is why we're pushing back hard on it.”

This is simply not the conventional meaning of zone-based fares. This assumes everyone who wants to travel is willing to submit proof of residency - or pay $5 a ride? What about live-in nannies? Subsidized housing in wealthy neighborhoods? In general: capntransit.blogspot.com/2021/01/dont...
Zone-Based. The term “zone-based” means a system of charging fares for riders of public transit based on the community district residency of each rider with a maximum fare of $5 per ride charged to non-residents and residents of zone 1, a fare of $4.50 charged to residents of zone 2, a fare of $3 charged to residents of zone 3, and no fare charged to residents of zone 4.

Section of the nycsubway.org track map showing the Fulton Street local tracks leading west to the outer tracks of the Hoyt-Schermerhorn station and then, not in revenue service, to the former Court Street station, now the NYCTA Transit Museum.

The outer tracks from the Jay Street station heading south cross under the tracks to Court Street and then split into upper (local) and unused lower (express) levels. The Crosstown tracks from the inner Hoyt platform curve south to merge with the upper level tracks on Smith Street.

Rajkumar is indeed generally pro-car and kind of creepy. But her wardrobe includes several tight-fitting bright red dresses that she rotates through. To the point: the right-of-way crosses her district, and the stops at Myrtle and Wilson Avenues would greatly increase access for her constituents.

I was also surprised that NYC only dropped one rank after implementing #CongestionPricing, but then I saw that the travel time and crash data are two years old. Let's see how NYC looks in the 2027 rankings! Also, "Hours of congestion" doesn't measure how widespread the congestion is in those hours!
The ConsumerAffairs Research Team analyzed the 50 most populous U.S. metropolitan areas across three weighted metrics to identify the cities with the worst traffic.

Average travel time to work (45 points): We looked at the most recent (2023) data from the U.S. Census Bureau for travel time to work among commuters 16 and over who didn’t work from home.
Hours of congestion (45 points): We examined the number of congested hours in metropolitan areas, as reported by the Federal Highway Administration. The most recent Urban Congestion Report is for the period from January 2025 to March 2025. Congested hours are defined by the FHWA as “the average number of hours during specified time periods in which road sections are congested — speeds less than 90% of free-flow speed (e.g., 54 mph if free-flow speed is 60 mph).” Congested hours are reported on weekdays from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Fatal car crashes per 100,000 people (10 points): The number of fatal car crashes per 100,000 residents was sourced from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Fatality Analysis Reporting System. Data is from 2023.

People in this article point out how fast Cuomo's staff was able to release unflattering information about Boylan after she accused him. That's common in sexual harassment cases, but I'm pretty sure it's not the only time Cuomo's minions smeared people. www.nytimes.com/2021/03/16/n...
Shortly after Ms. Boylan had first accused Mr. Cuomo, several media organizations published details of her personnel records that were released by the Cuomo administration, outlining unflattering accounts of Ms. Boylan’s past actions as a boss and recommendations of disciplinary action against her.

Cuomo's power is a lot more specific than what de Blasio says. He controlled ballot lines and patronage jobs when he was in power. But he also saved up dirt, like on Lindsey Boylan. (Started a new thread because I unwittingly triggered Boylan with my original post.) nymag.com/intelligence...
What do you make of the people who called for Cuomo to resign in 2021 after the harassment report and then went on to endorse him for mayor four years later?
It’s small and it’s cowardly. Look, I understand that he has an ability to intimidate people. I understand that when they hear Their Master’s Voice, they jump. A lot of people just can’t psychologically figure out how to stand up to this guy. They have flashbacks and they think he’s going to win and they don’t want to have him go against them. I think a lot of mainstream politicians act out of fear. They want to survive, they want to get reelected. They don’t want to have too much conflict in their life, and so the easy thing to do is to give in to him. But it’s not in the interest of their constituents, and they will regret it one day because he turns against pretty much anyone who was his ally. I mean, that’s been a pretty established pattern. I don’t understand how a human being could call for his resignation and somehow forget about it. Or, as in the case of Senator Gillibrand, call out sexual harassment and then suddenly go neutral on what Andrew Cuomo did. I think a lot of voters look at that and realize there’s something profoundly wrong if leaders cannot stay consistent with their own previously moral stances.

The entrance to the bathrooms at Moynihan Station around 5:30pm on Saturday. I used the men's room, there was no line. If there's a bathroom built in this century that has a line with more than a dozen women but no line for men, the architect who signed off on it should never work again.

New Diamond crossovers are depicted just before the termini at Flatbush Avenue, Utica Avenue and New Lots Avenue. A storage track extension is depicted just east of Utica Avenue.

The A/C and Long Island Railroad lines are a few blocks north of the IRT lines.

Junction. Addresses major bottlenecks, enhance operations, and reliability. Increase service capacity for
existing customers of the2 34 5 lines not just in Brooklyn, but also in Manhattan and the Bronx.

Well, the DOT did restrict the BQE to two lanes, as I originally suggested. But there has basically been no spillover from that on the streets of Cobble Hill! I'd like to see if the congestion persists once the charge reaches $12-15. The real solution is the Cross-Harbor Rail Freight Tunnel!
