Excellent text! There's a critical through line about meritocracy on our book Why We Fear AI, too - might be up your alley
Many (especially if they are from the professional stratum or
even the capitalist class themselves) would likely feel an immediate
need and desire to reject the suggestion that intelligence is, for
the most part, a post-hoc justification for social hierarchy. And
yet, in some sense, everyone (other than the actual capitalists)
really knows that the meritocratic justification is to a significant
degree post-hoc. Everyone knows that the justification in terms
of intelligence follows from the hierarchy, rather than the other
way around. In fact, to simultaneously believe and not believe the
justification is an amazing feat, one that is almost constitutive of
belonging to the so-called “middle class,” its real “special something.” Let us explain: within the pyramid, people generally are
happy to justify their own position relative to the people under
them, the deskilled ones, etc. in terms of intelligence. So the story
goes: they know themselves to be better at the job, to be more
suited, harder working, and most importantly just plain smarter
than the people that are below them in the hierarchy. The head of
a company’s research division who looks (perhaps fondly) at her
busy teams—she tells and believes this story about herself just as
much as the desk worker who looks down his nose at the people
who deliver his office supplies or clean the building. As always, when it comes to complex social phenomena, there are plenty
of exceptions to the rule, but by and large, where people look
down the pyramid hierarchy—things tend to look good and quite
well justified. The more intelligent reside above the slightly lesser
minds, and all is as it should be. And yet! Throughout the very
same pyramid, when the very same people look up, rather than
down, what happens? At every level, everyone knows with equal
conviction that right there, just above them, a mistake was made,
some error (perhaps of Kafkaesque proportion) has occurred, and
they find themselves subjected to the whims of someone with
hardly any brains at all. The meritocracy has failed, and there
stands a fool. Thus is the horror of the office.
Perhaps that is the real meaning of the phrase “middle class,”
its essential belief being this double vision of where things are
right and where things are wrong. Something between one half
and two thirds of the US population (depending on the polls)
think of themselves as “middle class” or perhaps “upper middle
class.” They are the people who are high enough in the pyramid
that they can look down on at least someone, and hence—they
are intelligent.

"Most of the increase in socialism’s positive rating through 2025 reflected increasingly positive views among Democrats, rising from 50% in 2010 to 66% last year. The latest uptick, however, comes entirely from political independents."

Socialism's appeal is at a new high, but it remains less popular than capitalism and well below free enterprise.

Xavier Worthy is such a good fast WR. As long as you don't let any defensive player touch him. And also in fact NO ONE should touch him. And also don't throw the ball too hard at him. And also don't throw it to him where he needs to get his feet down. Other than that he's great

As an academic I feel like that I'm living in that scene in The Big Short where they see all the empty houses and know it's a bubble, but for me it's hearing about all the innovation and growth in higher education, then teaching a class where only 8/250 students show up weekly
