Areas of heavy rainfall from the remnants of #Rachel and its associated moisture will continue to result in the potential for significant flash and urban flooding today from Southern California into the Great Basin and portions of the Southwest United States. Weather.gov
NOAA Weather Prediction Center outlook showing the greatest flash flood risk associated with Post-Tropical Cyclone Rachel from October 11–14, 2026. A Moderate Risk (red, at least 40% chance) covers portions of southern Nevada and southwestern Utah, including Las Vegas. A broader Slight Risk (yellow, at least 15% chance) extends across portions of Nevada, Utah, Arizona, and southeastern California, surrounded by a Marginal Risk (green, at least 5% chance). Three smaller maps illustrate the decreasing flash flood threat through Wednesday morning, with the risk becoming more limited and shifting northeast.

Historic warmth is currently impacting our global oceans. September shattered the previous peak for the warmest average global sea surface temperature on record for the month. And this excessive heat is found across nearly all regions. Data from NOAA ERSSTv6. I finally adjusted the y-axis here. 🌊
Green line graph time series of average sea surface temperature anomalies for each September from 1900 through 2026. There is large interannual variability, but an overall long-term increasing trend. Anomalies are computed relative to a 1981-2010 baseline.

Abnormally, potentially record-breaking temperatures will impact southern California and stretch north toward the Bay Area and Central Valley through next week.
Heat Wave Mainly For Coastal California Through Much Of Next Week Bullet Points:Prolonged, Dangerous Heat Wave: Higher than typical October temperatures will impact Coastal Southern California up through the Bay Area and Central Valley through next week. Major to Extreme HeatRisk and several daily high temperature records are expected this weekend well into next week. Heat of this intensity can endanger anyone without adequate cooling or hydration. High Temperatures, Little Night Relief: Temperatures will run 15 to 20 degrees above normal, pushing coastal areas well into the 90s and adjacent urban and some Central Valley areas around 100°F. Overnight lows in the mid to upper 70s in the Los Angeles and San Diego urban areas will provide little relief through the heat wave. Stay Safe in Extreme Heat: Protect yourself and others by staying hydrated, using air conditioning or cooling centers, limiting sun exposure, and checking on vulnerable relatives and neighbors. Never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles, as interior temperatures reach extreme levels within minutes. Late-season fall heat waves can be just as dangerous as summer heat. Maps Overview:Max High Temps Through 10/9: Shows high temperatures ranging from 85°F to 105°F+ (orange to dark red) across Coastal California, the Bay Area, Central Valley, and Southern California (including Sacramento, San Francisco, King City, Los Angeles, and San Diego). Max HeatRisk Through 10/9: Shows widespread 3-Major (red) and 4-Extreme (purple) HeatRisk along the California coast and Southern California regions, with 1-Minor (yellow) to 2-Moderate (orange) risk inland.
