Abnormally, potentially record-breaking temperatures will impact southern California and stretch north toward the Bay Area and Central Valley through next week.
Heat Wave Mainly For Coastal California Through Much Of Next Week Bullet Points:Prolonged, Dangerous Heat Wave: Higher than typical October temperatures will impact Coastal Southern California up through the Bay Area and Central Valley through next week. Major to Extreme HeatRisk and several daily high temperature records are expected this weekend well into next week. Heat of this intensity can endanger anyone without adequate cooling or hydration. High Temperatures, Little Night Relief: Temperatures will run 15 to 20 degrees above normal, pushing coastal areas well into the 90s and adjacent urban and some Central Valley areas around 100°F. Overnight lows in the mid to upper 70s in the Los Angeles and San Diego urban areas will provide little relief through the heat wave. Stay Safe in Extreme Heat: Protect yourself and others by staying hydrated, using air conditioning or cooling centers, limiting sun exposure, and checking on vulnerable relatives and neighbors. Never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles, as interior temperatures reach extreme levels within minutes. Late-season fall heat waves can be just as dangerous as summer heat. Maps Overview:Max High Temps Through 10/9: Shows high temperatures ranging from 85°F to 105°F+ (orange to dark red) across Coastal California, the Bay Area, Central Valley, and Southern California (including Sacramento, San Francisco, King City, Los Angeles, and San Diego). Max HeatRisk Through 10/9: Shows widespread 3-Major (red) and 4-Extreme (purple) HeatRisk along the California coast and Southern California regions, with 1-Minor (yellow) to 2-Moderate (orange) risk inland.

Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring" was released on this day 62 years ago. I have a first edition & come back to it often, including this paragraph in the chapter "Obligation to Endure." It's worth reading. "We urgently need an end to these false assurances, to the sugar coating of unpalatable facts."
Cover of Silent Spring by Rachel CarsonThe last paragraph in the Silent Spring chapter Obligation to Endure, reads, in part, " We urgently need an end to these false assurances, to the sugar coating of unpalatable facts... The public must decide whether it wishes to continue on the present road, and it can do so only when in full possession of the facts. In the words of Jean Rostand, "The obligation to endure gives us the right to know."
