Really funny how phones now have automated robot answering machines to answer suspected robot spam calls. No human intervention required. Phones now existing as robot PvP devices completely divorced from benefitting society in any way. It rules.

I'm also very familiar with the cycle of Richard Burns Rally
5 text boxes arranged in a cycle:
"See people being good at RBR"
"Reinstall RBR and all the mods"
"Hit every tree within 100m of the stage"
"5 stages of grief later, accept you're just not very good at this"
"Uninstall"
Repeat ad infinitum

Feeling cautiously optimistic about these re-releases. The original announcements raised some worries, especially as everything then went silent, but it sounds like they're going about it the right way. GP4 is so good, you don't need to do much to it. store.steampowered.com/news/app/360...

A truly wild rebranding effort. Touring cars = stock cars (ie NASCAR) makes sense until you think about it for more than 5 seconds, since it was just TOCA World Touring Cars underneath.

The Formula Nippon PS1 game has a similar thing with then-current drivers and team owners appearing to offer... encouragement? The whole game and the manual has one of the worst official translations I've ever seen.
Satoshi Motoyama encourages the player after you win your first season: "Um, doing well. I'm sure you'll do better next season."This car select screen leaves Mugen untranslated in the car data screen.Car builders are mistranslated: Lola becomes "Laura" and Reynard becomes "Lanyard"

Thoroughly enjoying the 70s-tastic box art of Auto Racing on the Intellivision. I love the mix of cars (the cars in the bottom right look several years apart, and the top left looks like an IndyCar) and the podium scene which I'm sure is based on a photograph but I can't pin it down.

Interesting seeing various takes on this. The 90s are a bit before my time but I was introduced to Dragon Ball by a half-Japanese friend in the early 00s and anime/manga still felt very niche in the UK, with the exception of Pokemon. Though on the flip side I don't remember much moral panic either.

Exponential weight taxes on cars to price big 4x4s out of contention (exceptions for people who genuinely need 4WD cars, who probably drive old Land Rovers that aren't very heavy anyway). My Vauxhall Corsa can drive up a rutted gravel road in a pinch, you don't need a 4x4 for the school run.

Accurate.
Screenshot of a social media post by Angus McIntyre (@angusm@mastodon.social). The post humorously claims that the UK government's plan to teach 10 million British children how to use VPNs could become one of the largest IT education projects ever. It jokes that experts support the scheme because peer education and incentives will help it succeed, and includes a mock quote saying that, with the rise of autocratic governments worldwide, VPN literacy is more important than ever and that the project comes at the right time. The humour derives from the implication that government internet restrictions would encourage widespread VPN use among young people.
