Really funny how phones now have automated robot answering machines to answer suspected robot spam calls. No human intervention required. Phones now existing as robot PvP devices completely divorced from benefitting society in any way. It rules.

It captures the stakes of IRL rallying better than anything before or since, as even one minor crash can be the end of your rally. Take that online with the mods, where you really only have *one shot* on stages that are often longer and harder than in the base game, it's so punishing. But so good.

I'm also very familiar with the cycle of Richard Burns Rally
5 text boxes arranged in a cycle:
"See people being good at RBR"
"Reinstall RBR and all the mods"
"Hit every tree within 100m of the stage"
"5 stages of grief later, accept you're just not very good at this"
"Uninstall"
Repeat ad infinitum

Feeling cautiously optimistic about these re-releases. The original announcements raised some worries, especially as everything then went silent, but it sounds like they're going about it the right way. GP4 is so good, you don't need to do much to it. store.steampowered.com/news/app/360...

A truly wild rebranding effort. Touring cars = stock cars (ie NASCAR) makes sense until you think about it for more than 5 seconds, since it was just TOCA World Touring Cars underneath.

Great film by the way. It's by Ryusuke Hamaguchi and somehow came out around the same time as Drive My Car, so it got overshadowed. It's not as good, but if you like one you'll like the other. Maddening that it's not available on Blu-Ray here.

That said, in the 2021 film Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy, there's a story set in a world where humanity collectively lost faith in computers after a massive cyber attack (details unspecified) and went back to analogue tech. I rolled my eyes when I saw it but it feels more believable now.

Haha, it's pretty obscure even here. I wish I could say you missed out but it's just not much fun to play, and even as someone who's not very sensitive to framerate, it runs really badly.

The Formula Nippon PS1 game has a similar thing with then-current drivers and team owners appearing to offer... encouragement? The whole game and the manual has one of the worst official translations I've ever seen.
Satoshi Motoyama encourages the player after you win your first season: "Um, doing well. I'm sure you'll do better next season."This car select screen leaves Mugen untranslated in the car data screen.Car builders are mistranslated: Lola becomes "Laura" and Reynard becomes "Lanyard"

Another favourite is the SG-1000 port of Monaco GP (released 1983). The first version has what looks like a 70s F2 car leading some newer F1 cars. The second version has a Renault, Ferrari and McLaren (not even legally distinct) at Monaco.

Thoroughly enjoying the 70s-tastic box art of Auto Racing on the Intellivision. I love the mix of cars (the cars in the bottom right look several years apart, and the top left looks like an IndyCar) and the podium scene which I'm sure is based on a photograph but I can't pin it down.

I remember it changed pretty quickly though. Spirited Away (and Ghibli generally) really broke through around this time, Waterstones started stocking manga and by the end of the 00s Death Note had broken out of the anime bubble as well, at least where I was. Nothing like today though.

Interesting seeing various takes on this. The 90s are a bit before my time but I was introduced to Dragon Ball by a half-Japanese friend in the early 00s and anime/manga still felt very niche in the UK, with the exception of Pokemon. Though on the flip side I don't remember much moral panic either.

Where I am GAME has gone from a town centre shop to a few shelves in the corner of the out-of-town Sports Direct and it felt like higher management gave up then. It's almost always more expensive than Argos (never mind online outlets), very little actually in stock and no obvious way to order in.
