Cannot stop thinking about the family of the young man with hydrocephalus from birth, who did not have much money, but cared for him at home well enough that he lived to 21. For the turn of the century, that is quite a feat. #genealogist #microhistory

That fun #genealogist moment when you realize one of your lines technically has 5 generations jammed into one century- myself born at the end and a great great grandmother born at the beginning.

I knew that a pair of my 3x g grandparents had divorced (she’s a “widow” in America, but he dies in Warsaw decades later)- but never thought I’d find out why. Well, I’ve now found years of him being arrested for violence in the Warsaw papers… safe to say I now have my suspicions #genealogist

Every. Damn. Day. People insist their names were “changed at Ellis Island” and then come at me with “are you calling my grandma a liar”. I don’t know your grandma. But I do know the facts- and that’s that NO ONE’S NAME WAS CHANGED AT ELLIS ISLAND #genealogist

I am currently writing up a paper I am giving in a few months. It's about the female experience in Glamorgan County Lunatic Asylum. I've just rediscovered a woman who stole an attendant's clothes, escaped by jumping the fence, and was never seen again. I hope she had a good life 🙏

Auschwitz was at the end of a long process. It did not start from gas chambers. This hatred was gradually developed by humans. From ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence... to systematic and industrial murder. Auschwitz took time.
A bird's-eye view of a former Auschwitz II-Birkenau camp showing a wide dirt pathway flanked by parallel rows of barbed-wire fences. Groups of visitors walk along the path, surrounded by the remnants of brick structures and barracks, now reduced to foundations. Green grass contrasts with the somber history of the site, as the path leads toward a guard tower in the distance.

Dear Friends,

There have been many teases by us talking about the arrival of this unique award winning project and Gesher Galicia is proud to announce that the first 2500 indexed records from the secret NKVD Files are now searchable on the All Galicia Database.

After the Soviet occupation of eastern Poland in 1939, Jews from several territories fell victim to NKVD arrests and deportations. For this reason, we emphasize that these records may be of interest to genealogists looking for information on:

Polish Jews who were prewar residents of former eastern Galicia and Volhynia that became Soviet-controlled western Ukraine

Polish Jews from German-occupied Poland who fled to the Soviet-controlled territory

Austrian Jews deported from Vienna to Nisko

Czech Jews deported from Moravská Ostrava to Nisko

German Jews who fled to the Soviet-controlled territory

Hungarian Jews, and those from Zakarpattia (Transcarpathia), who fled to the Soviet-controlled territory

Full announcement here:
