Limiting homes where Edmontonians want to live, close to their jobs, schools and family, will erode Edmonton's affordability advantage.

Sounds like McClure got wind of shenanigans. Rogue scrutineers from 28 third-party groups could easily hijack a hand-counted vote and cause total chaos. But dropping this decision at 5:30 PM on a long weekend Friday is undeniably late in the game. #abpoli

Danielle Smith bullshitting us, #abpoli. #yeg's Zoning Bylaw was approved in Oct/23 and had been worked on since '18-'19 as per city files (shorturl.at/U4lFn). HAF was created in Fed '22 budget, applications in '23: shorturl.at/mDbdJ. Bylaw was basically done by then. Who's misleading who?

Remember, you can’t force everyone in your neighbourhood to come from a certain socioeconomic class and get political support for that in 2026, but you can if you demand every multifamily building have upscale finishes and design that raises the price of entry.

Look, even if you hate infill, you should be absolutely CHILLED today. This is insane, harmful, & if this government had used the same move for something you love you’d have zero recourse. This wild abuse of power holds sobering realities. And it’s hard to shove the toothpaste back into the tube.

This Alberta provincial government wants to do everyone’s job but their own. Poorly They don’t know what they are doing and don’t care. It’s not good governance they are after, it’s populist politics - which it seems they discard as soon as they wring people out of their money and attention.

Casually throwing away a decade of work, probably 10s of millions of dollars worth, and making Edmonton start from scratch. Stopping a building boom in its tracks too. Red tape reduction my ass.
Edmonton will be required to adopt rules for high-density infill development that revert to the parameters in place before its 2024 zoning changes for housing types, density and height, and to restore minimum on-site parking requirements in place before 2020. Edmonton will have three months from Oct. 8 to amend its bylaw.

Over 25 years my family of four has owned either one or zero cars, depending on the era. Under Smith's forced repeal of a 6-year old bylaw, if I were to redevelop my property I would be forced to add parking spots to it. Peeking out my window right now, I can see 10 empty public parking spots.

Premier NIMBY
Screenshot of an X post by Alberta Premier Danielle Smith (@ABDanielleSmith), dated October 8, 2026. The post says Albertans are frustrated when a neighbouring house is demolished and replaced by a 16-unit complex with no parking. It announces that Edmonton will return to pre-2024 density and height rules with minimum parking requirements, and that Calgary will keep its repeal of blanket rezoning. Both cities will review their bylaws. Attached are two graphics. The first shows a house beside a multi-unit building with the text “Responsible Infill: Protecting the Family Home.” The second, partly cut off, reads “Responsible Infill: Rolling Back Blanket Rezoning” with checkmarks for listening to Albertans, parking and water infrastructure considerations, and a full bylaw review.

Sorry, lots going on this am. If there was risk of them needing to go back to council for more money, and there are projects on the list that haven't been started, that could free up said money.. they could just cancel those ones to free up the funds. bam, no need for adjustment.

Cassandra @bunnysmash.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
There must be a memo somewhere then that we aren't aware of. From a slightly more than average in the know, it sounds like it's worse than they've let on publicly if Rutherford is pushing that an adjustment is coming. And honestly, if they haven't been tendered, cancel them. No adjust needed.

One of the hardest things about being a cyclist is dealing with the nagging feeling that a serious crash is inevitable. Because you can indeed do everything "right" and it still does not matter.
I followed every precaution and it didn’t matter

New to biking here

I started in July around the time of the fatal car crash with that biker. That and hearing everyone who bikes to work tell me that they have had horrid experiences with cars was disheartening.

I made sure to only use protected routes. I take Southwest corridor for basically my whole trip and even though it adds so much more time to my commute, it makes me feel safe.

None of that mattered because at some point, even for a second you will hit the main road. And you will always lose to the 4 ton machine. I got hit by a car parking in the bike lane. He was more concerned with his car than the fact that I could have my life potential altered forever because he was looking at his phone. And at the end of the day, the police can literally choose to not respond to your 911 call and you get stuck with medical bills.

It’s hard to have a conversation about sharing the road when people in cars feel entitled to do whatever they want and the only person who’s ever in danger is the biker. I love biking in this city and I have found a really love and joy for the outdoors because of it. Now I am terrified to even get on a bike lane, even if there is one, if it’s shared with the main road.

Hey #yegbike just a reminder about the detour on the NW of the High Level Bridge. Several cyclists seemed very confused about where to go on my commute because there is zero wayfinding signage about where the detour is. So I figured I'd share this detour map that Paths for People shared earlier.
Satellite map view of Constable Ezio Faraone Park and the High Level Bridge. There is a legend in the upper left-hand corner with a red line indicating shared path closed and a green line indicating shared path open. The typical shared use path and pedestrian sidewalk straight from the 97 Ave crosswalk to the northwest entrance of the shared use path on the High Level is closed. The detour is west along 97 Ave to connect onto the shared use path just slightly west of 110 St and then make a slight right to continue west on the shared use path avoiding the cobbled promenade and then left to continue on the shared use path towards the northwest entrance of the High Level Bridge. This path is indicated on the map with a green line.
