Unfortunately, it seems like the Edmonton infill multiplex world is about to find out what happens when the UCP turns its heat-seeking culture war lasers toward their frothing base’s enemy du jour. The ghost of the Alberta renewable energy industry sends condolences in advance.

what happens to the young professional moving to portland and seeking housing if the major development doesn’t get built? some people think the young professional simply won’t move to portland actual reality: they move there anyway and outbid local guy or his neighbours for an older rental house

I predict by February we'll have lots of articles featuring people across western Canada complaining about the lack of light in the mornings and how the little bit of extra light at 5pm isn't worth the tradeoff

The high cost of domestic air travel is already a drag on the Canadian economy. Privatization of airports will only weaken us further while introducing more of the problem we actually need to be addressing: the prevalence of rent seeking oligopolies in so many key sectors.

Doesn't matter that "only" 48% voted for him, or that his approval is "only" 30%, or that you're confident Pres Ossoff is gonna throw them all in jail in 2029. All that matters is how the massive country next door keeps talking about ending us. And he has the keys to it right now.

incredible stuff here. I've noticed that the line 1 trains frequently miss their vinyl floor door markings, so this is the same basic problem. I thought upgraded ATC was supposed to allow trains to stop in the same place every time?

No idea what to make of this race so far. Erhahart is Fletcher's anointed successor with no clear policy differences, not super inspiring. Saxe, this is a silly move to pull and I doubt it works. Fragedakis, really? Who is the best housing candidate? Most posted platforms don't even mention zoning.

this makes sense, because Brad has thoughtfully rebranded himself as a Bonservative politician, making him the clear choice for Bonservative voters who are looking to bring some common-sense Bonservative policies back to City Hall

Unverified but if this is real, it’s a hilarious way to find out this information.
I texted the premier about 20 minutes ago and almost immediately got a call back from a private number. I recorded the whole call. He said that only 2% of the bike lanes are going to be coming out. I mentioned that Bill 60 says all of University, Bloor, and Avenue are coming out, and he said "no, it never said all the lanes".

This is a little ambiguous to me, because he may have been using 2% to mean 2% of all bike lanes in Toronto (which would explain why he said "it never said all the lanes"), whereas I was referring only to the three main roads mentioned in Bill 60.

He did however mention that it will only be a small portion of them near Royal York road being removed, that he is working with the mayor, and that we can expect to hear news about it within a week or so.

Should I send this conversation to any news companies or community members (biking lawyer/cycle toronto)? What the premier says to a random citizen isn't exactly legally binding lol but maybe it could be of interest?

Every subsequent U.S. president who tries to do a modicum of good via foreign policy or trade is going to be sitting across from someone thinking yeah sure, okay, but what about the next guy. Absent political reforms, tribunals and truth and reconciliation, that credibility is gone forever.

People who believe AI is useless are viewing it as creatives. And correctly so; for writing, art, matters of taste, the outputs of AI are mostly slop. For people with a scientific or technical lens, in software, data, etc, it’s fully the opposite. Highly useful and powerful, for better or worse.

Respect the choice but it would have been a lot better for all involved if this decision wasn’t made at the 11th hour (after registering to run again, no less). Barely any time left for a new candidate to emerge.

Hard agree with this. As much as possible, convert all the existing bike routes to permanent infrastructure. Curbs, concrete, barriers. Bike lanes at sidewalk level. Make it as annoying and expensive as possible for future governments to rip out. Paint and flex-posts are not enough.

The famous New York Daily News headline FORD TO CITY: DROP DEAD. Alright I guess I need to be the guy that gives context in alt text. The original headline was about how Gerald Ford refused to bail out New York City when it was bankrupt in the 70s. I'm reappropriating it because Doug Ford (Ontario Premier) just won a case that gives him rights to trample over the urban planning decisions of cities (like Toronto)

incredible, the court basically did the dril drunk driving tweet
[75] There is much that is wrong with this reasoning. It minimizes the purpose of the legislation, in effect trivializing it by characterizing it as saving some drivers a few minutes rather than reducing traffic congestion, which may in turn result in a wide range of positive effects. At the same time, it inflates the negative effects of removing the bicycle lanes, talking of injuries and deaths that will occur only if the bicyclists choose to ride on the roads that have no bicycle lanes – a situation that obtains on roads throughout the province. Having so characterized the purpose and effects of the legislation, the application judge rendered the outcome inevitable on a simple proportionality standard.drunk driving may kill a lot of people, but it also helps a lot of people get to work on time, so, it;s impossible to say if its bad or not,

I don't think any amount of hot people saying nice things would work, because social media has big structural advantages for negative framing and opposition to things. Without massive changes to tech companies and their algorithms, clean energy would also need to use oppositional framing.

no amount of self-selection bias can explain away a result of 87% opposed on an n=87,000 sample size as a "fringe group" cope, seethe, etc
In a post on the social media platform X, Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon says the government will focus exclusively on "approved safety enhancements" for the airport and Toronto residents will have a say in future plans for the facility.

MacKinnon said the government received more than 87,000 responses to its consultation on the airport, which ended Friday.

About 87 per cent of respondents to the public survey were opposed to changes to the waterfront airport, said spokesperson Marie-Justine Torres on Saturday. She said about 80 per cent of the survey responses came from Toronto and another 15 per cent from the GTHA.

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow said at an unrelated event Saturday that while the province may have taken the land away from the city, the decision on what happens there falls with the federal government.
