Fun fact, there are 43km of bike lanes. The rest are wide sidewalks, just as dangerous as the sidewalks they argue are too dangerous to bike on.

One of the hardest things about being a cyclist is dealing with the nagging feeling that a serious crash is inevitable. Because you can indeed do everything "right" and it still does not matter.
I followed every precaution and it didn’t matter

New to biking here

I started in July around the time of the fatal car crash with that biker. That and hearing everyone who bikes to work tell me that they have had horrid experiences with cars was disheartening.

I made sure to only use protected routes. I take Southwest corridor for basically my whole trip and even though it adds so much more time to my commute, it makes me feel safe.

None of that mattered because at some point, even for a second you will hit the main road. And you will always lose to the 4 ton machine. I got hit by a car parking in the bike lane. He was more concerned with his car than the fact that I could have my life potential altered forever because he was looking at his phone. And at the end of the day, the police can literally choose to not respond to your 911 call and you get stuck with medical bills.

It’s hard to have a conversation about sharing the road when people in cars feel entitled to do whatever they want and the only person who’s ever in danger is the biker. I love biking in this city and I have found a really love and joy for the outdoors because of it. Now I am terrified to even get on a bike lane, even if there is one, if it’s shared with the main road.

The city could make a fortune if they actually enforced red light running on protected left turns. Driving culture has shifted so that 1-2 cars just run the red every time.

BREAKING 📣 For several days, a peaceful protest took place in the morning, after a young child was killed by a car driver. The child was riding his bike to school, the father with him. The grieving community came together with hundreds of people, cyclist or not, creating a 3km long human bike lane.

We bought a 2023 CRV Hybrid in 2025 and the dealership REALLY wants us to trade it in already. We get this email almost quarterly now. How is this a good idea? I think it is a longer term than the car loan than what we have now. A 7 year car loan? JFC. The interest alone is bs. Car payments suck! 😭

Hey #yegbike just a reminder about the detour on the NW of the High Level Bridge. Several cyclists seemed very confused about where to go on my commute because there is zero wayfinding signage about where the detour is. So I figured I'd share this detour map that Paths for People shared earlier.
Satellite map view of Constable Ezio Faraone Park and the High Level Bridge. There is a legend in the upper left-hand corner with a red line indicating shared path closed and a green line indicating shared path open. The typical shared use path and pedestrian sidewalk straight from the 97 Ave crosswalk to the northwest entrance of the shared use path on the High Level is closed. The detour is west along 97 Ave to connect onto the shared use path just slightly west of 110 St and then make a slight right to continue west on the shared use path avoiding the cobbled promenade and then left to continue on the shared use path towards the northwest entrance of the High Level Bridge. This path is indicated on the map with a green line.

An example of why we can’t have nice things. A handful of seniors who want to drive as fast as possible force concessions from an affordable housing developer. Council then puts the project on hold “for months”. An abandoned building <1km from the LRT is the right place for housing.
