A common Eastern bumblebee clinging to heartleaf blue aster (Symphyotrichum cordifolium). What amazes me about this closeup - and what I can't see in person - is how beautiful the disk flowers are. Lookit those little yellow tulip-shaped flowers!
An extremely fuzzy bumblebee hangs upside-down from a spray of 10 or so aster flowers. The ray petals are very lightly lavender-colored, but the disk flowers are as described. (Some of those have gone by, and are now dark red-purple instead.)

I forgot to take pictures of the job I finished today, but I did get this confusing photo of a bumble bee queen taking flight after warming herself on my arm.
Photo of a bumble bee hovering just above a slender white arm. It appears one of her wings detached upon takeoff, but she flew fast and straight and competently.

Let's kill an old gardeners' tale. It was shown 100 years ago gravel does NOT improve drainage, but even today, so-called gardening experts continue to pass this myth on as if it were fact. Linda Chalker-Scott’s “The Myth of Drainage Material in Container Plantings” s3.wp.wsu.edu/uploads/site...
Drawing of a cross-section of 2 flower pots each with one plant with roots in the soil. On the left, the soil in the pot is light brown at the top and dark brown at the bottom & the root do not touch the dark brown soil. On the right, there is a thick layer of white gravel in the bottom of the pot, so the roots of this plant are in the midst of the dark brown soil.
Text on the left says, "The wettest soil is at the bottom."
Text on the right says, "Gravel moves the wettest soil up in the pot closer to the roots, which can lead to rot."

An alarming new report released by the United Nations this week revealed that the global temperature rise will exceed 1.5°C, likely within the next few years. But every 10th of a degree of warming we can prevent through immediate action makes a difference for our health, ocean and planet.
Graphic with quote "A future full of fish to catch, clean air to breathe and thriving coastal communities is still possible for our children, but we must make real investments now. Our ocean is a major part of the solution. Investing in clean energy, such as offshore wind, reducing emissions from shipping, and exploring carbon removal are critical to making that vision a reality.”

Thank you Xerces for this excellent primer. I personally am hooting and hollering at this part
Screenshot of text from article:
Does the bee have a pollen basket?
Just like workers, queens have a smooth, shiny corbicula on each hind leg. In early spring, you may see queens carrying large loads of pollen back to their newly established nests to feed their very first batch of worker bees.
In late summer, keep an eye out for mating pairs!
Because queens are larger than males, you might see a massive queen attached to a distinctly smaller, shaggier male.
For this mating pair of golden northern bumblebees (Bombus fervidus), it's clear that the queen is much larger and the male is shaggier. (Photo: Molly Martin, Xerces Society.)
