Thirty years ago, I planted two Ginkgo trees in my yard. Unknown at the time, one was female and one male. In short, they produce fruit each year. Encouraged by my Chinese daughter-in-law, I finally decided to forage and roast some as a snack. Details in the alt text. #ginkgo #foraging

A small Ziploc bag of ginkgo seeds. You must wear gloves when harvesting the fruit, because the flesh of the fruit can be a skin irritant. I just picked up the fruit that was fallen on the ground, and squirted the seeds out with my fingers.

The seeds must be very well rinsed and scraped of all the flesh of the fruit, which again, is an irritant. Then let them dry. We did a 15-minute saltwater soak after this.

After roasting at 390° F for 15 minutes in a lightly oiled pan, we added salt and let them cool. The shelled ginkgo nuts are green and nutty/starchy, remeniscent of pistachios or chestnuts.

Here are the instructions my DIL provided. You can translate them if you need to:

1.清洗与处理:

4. 空气炸锅烘烤:

将处理好的白果平铺在空气炸锅炸篮里,不要重叠。

* **设定180°C,烤8分钟。**(经过实践,8分钟是达到“果实软糯”口感的黄金时间,10分钟会偏干发硬)。

小贴士:

**安全第一:白果一定要拍出裂缝再烤,否则在密闭加热环境下容易爆开。

**适量食用:白果虽有营养,但含有微量毒性,成人一次建议食用不超过10-15粒,儿童更需减量。

**轻松剥壳:烤好后的白果壳会沿着裂缝张开,轻轻一掰就能取出翠绿软的里肉

I was happy when this Chestnut-sided Warbler popped out into the sun, even though the bird decided to stay behind the Black Walnut branches. Chestnut-sided warblers are one of the warblers that go through quite the outfit change, switching to an almost neon green in the Fall.

After unexpectedly winning her first blue ribbon for a sewn cape in 1981, Carol St. Clair Johnson developed an enduring love for the New Mexico State Fair. The quilt Fair New Mexico-41 Fair Years incorporates more than six hundred of the ribbons she won at the fair every subsequent year except 2020 (when the fair was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic). Johnson earned ribbons for needlework, knitting, crochet, pies, cookies, cakes, canning, jewelry, flowers, vegetables, and potted plants. The title of the quilt is a reference to the state song, and the design places the state's Zia sun symbol at the center. The quilt earned Johnson yet another ribbon: Best in Category (miscellaneous quilt) at the 2023 New Mexico State Fair.
