Chicago's Jewelers Row. 8:30 AM on a sunny Saturday. People gather underneath the soft rumble of the elevated trains, attracted by a prosperous coffeehouse. We don't always need to fear elevated transit.

BREAKING 📣 For several days, a peaceful protest took place in the morning, after a young child was killed by a car driver. The child was riding his bike to school, the father with him. The grieving community came together with hundreds of people, cyclist or not, creating a 3km long human bike lane.

$142k/stall is shockingly cheap by ST standards. Will be amazing if they build it for that.

Ultimately, I agree that perfect is enemy of the good, but I wish they hadn’t designed the bikeway assuming it was the most dangerous facility in the corridor - all while keeping the GP lanes wide and straight (no speed tables or raised intersections either).

I have fond memories of biking this with you in the early 2010s when we were thinking about what the waterfront would become. That crazy pinch point is still there on the Port property, but the rest is much improved. Enjoy your time in Seattle.

Finally, in my experience I’ve noticed that people on bikes are generally happier than many other road users. But it is true that they tend to get cranky when their lives are threatened by inattentive or negligent motorists who are simultaneously violating traffic laws.

Also, not suggesting that this is what you’re observing but there are often issues with traffic signals not detecting bicycles and motorcycles. In those cases, there is a protocol for how to proceed, and that might look like running a red light app.leg.wa.gov/rcw/default....

Tales of everyday corruption. Pete Hegseth cancelled the $400,000 contract for making uniforms for the Blue Angels on the grounds that the contract with "The Sewing Box" was DEI since the firm is Black-owned. Instead, he awarded it to a Trump donor for $1,690,000, a 325% price increase!

I am begging you not to believe gazillionaire baseball owners when they tell you Skubal going to the Dodgers means we need a salary cap. Competitive balance is not the reason they want a salary cap. They just want to spend less, and with more predictability, on total payroll. That is all.

And that crossing is not super helpful for people biking because it pushes them into the main motorway lane. It got like a one-off ad hoc thing without much thought to the future of that antiquated street

Both Bridge Way N and Greenlake Way N are relic streets from 1930s highway design and should be redesigned, or at least rechannelized, to meet Seattle’s current transportation priorities

Last thing is in past bike master plans, the Seattle Parks Dept pushed back on making that lower woodland park road formal bike infrastructure, so it was never included, despite it being a clear multimodal desire line for just about everyone

I think it definitely would be better as a slow zone greenway rather than a PBL. I commute up and down that corridor and it needs to go all the way up to woodland park and cut through the old road by the lower woodland pump track.

This budget request is moving forward, but Claudia Balducci and Jorge Barón did put secure funding for a report asking for Zahilay's full RTO strategy. That amendment followed a failed attempt to put a hold on the funds to reopen the Admin Building until that report was delivered.

Rerouting and reclaiming SR 99 through South Park would result in an 86% reduction in Pollution Generating Impervious Surfaces, per this report. It really seems like that would help Southern Resident Killer Whales more than keeping housing banned.
Chart showing the reroute and reclaim option would reduce PGIS by 86%.

We build vehicles that weigh 9000 pounds with 1000HP, can go 0-60mph in 3 seconds and market them recklessly. We then ask people to wear construction vests to cross the street. This is all so beyond absurd and it's truly incredible that we've normalized this.
