Global model ensembles are in strong agreement that a prolonged &anomalous nearly West-wide autumn heatwave will develop this week & persist for 10+ days. While some daytime records may be set, this event will be more notable for its persistence & breadth. [Thread]
Map showing predicted temperature anomalies in early October from the ECMWF ensemble across the western U.S. Nearly the entire region is painted red and pink, indicating widespread very warm anomalies.

Experts say it is unusual for the 4,478m peak to be snow-free at this time of year, with climate change considered a key factor.

None of the cheerleaders of the Permitting Reform bill are talking about the fact that it establishes a 150-day statute of limitations for lawsuits under *any* federal law challenging authorizations for coal, oil, and gas extraction. Forever. 150 days is no time at all.

A few days ago I came across a late flying damselfly, a male Boreal Bluet. On a warm summer's day, he would be bright sky blue, but on a cool Yukon autumn day (9C) it was a dark grey-violet! This is a common response to cold in both bluets and the much larger blue darner dragonflies. #Odonata

A photo of me (a white woman with long brownish hair wearing glasses and a dark blue shirt) holding an advance copy of my book "The Social Wasps of North America, Central America, and the Caribbean: Second Edition" in front of an old wooden railing and some lush sassafras leaves. There is a big illustration of a bald-faced hornet on the cover.

This photo is slightly misleading, since it was taken by my mom a year ago in 2025, immediately before we noticed the major printing errors in the plate series that required us to completely redo the printing from scratch. My joy is nonetheless real, and I feel justified in using this photo since I never posted it the first time around. It's all good now!

I once said this to @amywestervelt.bsky.social and I stand by the statement. “I don't think you can call anything where you're getting more oil out of the ground to burn a climate solution.” drilled.media/news/ccs
"It doesn't make sense to use CCS to prolong our use of fossil fuels, especially to produce electricity," David Ho, professor at University of Hawaii and senior researcher at Columbia Uni-versity, said. 'The argument in favor of enhanced oil recovery is often that if they weren't using this capt red CO2 they'd be using some other CO2. But I don't think you can call anything where you're getting more oil out of the ground to burn a climate solution."
