Precipitable water standardized anomaly forecast for Oct 6, 2026. Atmospheric rivers cause snowfall on Antarctica, thickening the snow layer there, contributing to the Southern Ocean sea surface becoming more saline, making it easier for the sea ice to melt. arctic-news.blogspot.com/2026/09/will...

Antarctic sea ice extent has fallen recently, and was 16.73 million km² on October 1, 2026, a record low for the time of year. At the Equinox on Sep 23, 2026, the Sun was at the Equator. Both hemispheres received equal amounts of sunlight. Arctic sea ice extent was 4.802 million km². Antarctic sea ice extent was 17.306 million km² and is closer to the Equator, so gets more sunlight. arctic-news.blogspot.com/2026/09/tele...

August 2026 total precipitation. Some coastal Antarctic areas receive relatively high amounts of precipitation, falling in the form of snow, due to low temperatures, and thickening the snow layer, while making the surface of the Southern Ocean more saline. arctic-news.blogspot.com/2026/09/tele...
