England's social housing has been allowed to dwindle away, with eight times more council homes being sold this year than were built. Without action, we are consigning millions of households to being stuck on waiting lists and the burden of housing benefit continues to grow.
this year - England will sell eight times more council homes than were built. Instead we should:
Provide 150,000 new social homes every year.
Buy back and refurbishment older council homes.
Stop selling off council housing stock and keep social homes for local communities in perpetuity.

House building slumps to lowest level since 2020 with job losses and falling confidence in Labour It’s no surprise that house building is stalling when people can’t afford to save for deposits This is the perfect time to replace the 1.4 million social homes lost since 1980
House building slumps to lowest level since 2020 sees job losses and falling confidence in Labour’s plans to fix the housing crisis.
Latest figures[1] from the construction industry show a sustained and deepening decline in housebuilding in the UK as the slowdown reaches depths not seen since early 2020.The lack of confidence in the sector is resulting in lay-offs and recruitment freezes.
Green Party Spokesperson, Cllr Matthew Snedker said; “The housing crisis is one symptom of the cost of living crisis. Houses remain at historically high prices[2], with most people finding house ownership unaffordable, as wages fail to keep pace with house price inflation. It’s no surprise that house building is stalling when people simply can’t afford to save for deposits when they are struggling to get by”
Most worrying is the slowing down of new work in the pipeline. New orders have fallen for eight months in a row. Even big names in the industry are starting to see their order books dwindle.
This long term downward trend has led to construction companies seeing subdued market conditions, heightened business uncertainty and growing risk aversion among clients.
Cllr Snedker continued “The housing crisis is causing very real damage to communities up and down the country. A record 169,050 children are now homeless in temporary accommodation in England[3], a 12% increase on last year. Homelessness has long-lasting consequences for children with families regularly placed out of area, far away from their school, GP and community. The educational attainment, health and development of homeless children plummets when they become homeless.[4]
“This is the perfect time to take advantage of falling borrowing costs by increasing the supply of public housing. Replacing the 1.4 million social homes lost since 1980[5] would reduce people’s housing costs, bringjob security to tradespeople and inject much needed confidence into the construction industry.
“The Green Party’s Right Homes, Right Place, Right Price Charter[6] would provide 150,000 new social homes every year through new build and the purchase of ex-council housing stock. It would give local authorities right to buy powers for several categories of property and make sure we keep social homes for local communities in perpetuity.”

Ministers are preparing to give the go-ahead to a major expansion of Gatwick, the UK's second-largest airport, as part of a broader push to nurture economic growth.
The government is also keen to approve an expansion of Luton airport if concerns about noise pollution from passenger jets flying over rural areas can be addressed.
And chancellor Rachel Reeves is set to reaffirm her support for Heathrow, the UK's largest airport, to build a contentious third runway in a speech about economic growth later this month, according to officials. But such a project could be a long way off being realised.

Excellent interview and here are some of the opening words of @zackpolanski.bsky.social that show him to be head and shoulders over many currently in government. (unedited transcript)
I think it's as simple as this is the establishment protecting itself we have a government who has been complicit in arming a genocide
we have major opposition parties that have also fueled that genocide and so when it comes to a group of people who are
representative of lots of people in this country who don't want to see the mass murder of innocent civilians who don't
want to see Netanyahu supported by our government want to assemble that is a real threat to establishment because
that's essentially the facade of democracy that we have in this country crumbling because this is demonstrating that where the
government are at and even where the major opposition party are at is in a completely different place to where the British public are at
and so I think that is the first thing that the Prime Minister the Home Secretary the police more widely that whole blob of Institutions go this
protest these people need to be stopped now within that of course Jewish voices like myself but many Jews who are speaking out against
this are a particular threat because what they have chosen to do is try and weaponize people's identity people's Judaism and claim
that this is some sort of threat to Jewish people now we've got to be careful here there is a distinction to be made there are some Jewish
people and I know Jewish people who are intimidated by these protests that doesn't mean they should be intimidated by these protests
that doesn't mean the protest should stop because they're intimidated but I think it is also true that the police and the government have
chosen to inflate those fears to stir those fears and to Center those fears because it all again serves the purpose of making uh this threat to
the establishment even more of a threat that then is combined with anti-Semitism now we know anti-Semitism exists as anti-muslim or
islamophobia hate exists and it's really important that we tackle that and we stand together with those communities you do not tackle
anti-Semiti…
