After I'd made a couple of hilarious jokes about "kids these days" a Year 12 asked "why are you dragging our generation, you must only be 15 years older than us?" He did not believe me when I told him he was out by 18 years. I may have a new favourite student.

This is a really clearly written article about what Britain needs to do and is doing about sorting out its energy supply.

I don't usually wear my smart watch overnight, but I did on Thursday night. Apparently my heart rate gets quite low overnight.
Screenshot of Google Health showing my heart rate got down to 45 bpm overnight.

We've enrolled "quite a lot" of A-level physics students to start next month. Made me wonder what the largest centre cohort in the country might be. Any ideas?

Back to work tomorrow, after a pretty packed and very enjoyable summer, with lots of time outside. I don't think I'd quite realised how exhausted I was (January to April were pretty awful) until I stopped for the summer.

On Thursday I get the train to Chepstow to ride the Lon Las Cymru route on my Brompton with an old uni friend on his Brompton. A mix of camping and B&Bs for the overnights. I think I last spoke to him at his wedding, about 21 years ago!

Spent yesterday turning the cupboard for an integrated fridge freezer into an end panel ready for a new freestanding fridge freezer arriving later in the week. Spent today moving a plug socket in my shed and sorting out my workbench. I like the summer holidays.

Instead of encouraging people to get around using active methods, we should be enabling it. Building safe, convenient, attractive walking and cycling infrastructure would save the NHS an absolute fortune. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

It was inevitable, wasn't it🙄 Of course the Telegraph would run with something like this👇 So let's remove some of the rose-tinted spectacles and also look at some of that data comparing 1976 with modern heat waves Because the 1976 nostalgia porn is wearing a bit thin at this stage 🧵1/23
Telegraph headiline:

"Heatwave hysterics wouldn't have lasted a day in 1976", overlaid with a bold “MONK DEBUNKED” stamp.

I have two days of normal teaching left, then for days next week with Y10 and Y11 visits, then I'm off until A-level results day on 13th August! When I go back to work, it's for a 17.5 hour timetable instead of our usual 23.5 (0.745 FTE), which will be nice.

💚 Not the end. When an old tree dies, it brings a plethora of new life. Especially so with oaks, which support 1000s of species during their lifetime, and this continues into their death time, as a transforming ecosystem of important decomposers move in, thriving in the throes of death.

The Major Oak has stood at the heart of Sherwood Forest for over a thousand years. This spring, it failed to come into leaf and experts now believe it has died. But its story isn’t over. Its ancient trunk & branches will continue to support life for years to come: www.rspb.org.uk/whats-happen...

Henry's brutal murder and the failures of the police have been appalling. His father's words are vital: "We don't want Henry's murder to be used to create further hatred, division or tension."
In a statement outside court, Marks father said "we want to use Henry's heartbreaking story to make change for the better. As the KC for the prosecution summed up in court; this is not a case about Sikhism. This is not a case about racism. This is a case about murder."
