AI gives you the promise to be able to pretend to be cool and capable. That slutty guitar player from school who got the girl you were in love with? He's now rendered redundant and you can fall asleep to the sound of the girl's synthesized voice singing to you that she loves you (he still fucks her)
Screenshot of a post on X by Nick Saraev claiming that Spotify, Apple Music, and music streaming are “over” because recent advances in AI-generated music, including Suno v6, will enable infinitely personalized music. The post says current perceptions of AI music are based on technology from “2–3 generations ago.”

If you have very good headphones and you start blasting classical music in very crowded situations, everything looks like a very poignant moment from a movie. The kid crying because he dropped his ice cream cone while Albinoni's adagio is playing? Pure beauty.

Yeah yeah it's so cool that everyone is vibecoding websites even though they have no idea how to do shit. Now everything that isn't slow as fuck is broken. And if it isn't l, it's siphoning data or installing malware. It feels like downloading porn in the late 90s

I have this thing where I "record" photo sessions on Petri dishes, just for funsies. And I know there's no meaning nor real value to these... but on the left we were talking about hope and on the right I was talking to someone who's grieving and sometimes the microfluffsters just... get it.
Diptych of close-up photographs showing fungal growth. On the left, large soft white and pale beige colonies form dense, cottony spheres, with a few darker spots emerging from the surface. On the right, a darker mass of fine white filaments is densely covered with hundreds of tiny brown and black spherical structures, creating an intricate, granular texture.

One of the main things this project is teaching me is how much of knowledge is filtered through a body and depends on being in a physical space. This is something no LLM can understand nor simulate credibly enough. You talk with people who "get it" and it's an instant recognition

Solar eclipse coming up so here’s one of my favourite maps
Top is a map of the US with “Google search volume for “eyes hurt” April 3 to April 10 2024” with a hot line running from Texas north east through to Maine. The bottom map shows the path of the total solar eclipse which runs in a lone from Texas through to Maine

Seems like there is some difference but it's something I can most likely adjust when I scan the negatives. (Yay, because I still have about a dozen expired rolls of films). Now let's go make some agar plates so that I can cover stuff in mold ✌️
A strip of developed Kodak Tri-X 400 black-and-white film is held in front of a bright window. Three consecutive frames show high-contrast outdoor scenes, including bare trees against a dark sky and dense foliage. The negatives appear well developed, with clear edge markings and frame numbers visible along the film. A palm plant and the façade of a neighboring building can be seen blurred through the window in the background.Close-up of a single black-and-white film negative held up to the light. The frame depicts a wooden sculpture with a prominent central vein and symmetrical fronds rendered in fine detail. Small water drops are visible on the film surface

Plan for the day is to find out how much of a problem it is to use film that expired in 2010 and compare it to fresh film (it's been a couple of years since I last developed stuff. Pray for me)
A film developing setup laid out on a white table. A large black changing bag with a zipper occupies the center, with a black-and-red daylight developing tank resting on top. Beside it are three bottles of Ilford chemicals: Ilfosol 3 developer, Ilfostop stop bath, and Rapid Fixer. In the foreground are several empty Kodak Professional Tri-X 400TX 35 mm film boxes, indicating the rolls have been loaded for processing. Two upholstered dining chairs and white cabinets are visible in the background.

Why do people keep saying that Nolan's Odyssey is the first movie ever made about the Odyssey? The film is directed by Mario Camerini, and produced by Dino De Laurentiis and Carlo Ponti. It stars Kirk Douglas, Silvana Mangano in a dual role as Penelope and Circe, and Anthony Quinn as Antinous.
A vintage lobby card for the 1959 film Ulysses. The left third features a yellow panel bordered in dark green with the tagline, “Mightiest of warriors! Mightiest of lovers! Mightiest of men!”, followed by the title Ulysses in large orange lettering, “Technicolor,” and cast and production credits below. The right side shows a dramatic scene in a forest: a muscular, bare-armed man in a simple brown tunic gently touches the forehead of a woman wearing an ornate pale blue gown with a jeweled green headdress and a sheer red shawl wrapped around her shoulders. They face one another with serious, intent expressions, framed by tree trunks and softly lit woodland scenery. The card shows slight age-related discoloration around the edges.

I was watching photos by Diane Arbus, Garry Winogrand and Paul Fusco and I don’t think that kind of photography is possible any more. People have a completely different relationship with photography and what it means to be photographed by someone whom you don’t know if you can trust.

Is anyone out there building on Harold Wager’s experiments where he takes leaf epidermis and uses the plant's ocelli as a lens?
Scanned black-and-white page from the Annals of Botany titled Wager – Perception of Light in Plants. The page contains six circular microscope photographs arranged in two columns and numbered 1–6. Each image shows a different microscopic view of plant tissue, with varied patterns of rounded cells, ring-like structures, and dense cellular textures. The aged page has cream-colored paper, visible wear, and printed labels beneath each image.

An acquaintance is getting married to a much older man. He's been ill last week and I wanted to ask about his health and instead of saying "how's the groom?" I said "how's the groomer?" And surely you understand why I need to walk into the river and pull a Jeff Buckley. Non fiori ma opere di bene.
