This is demonstrably, measurably improving the health of the people who live there. Most notably, it increases the respiratory *& cognitive* health of children. They literally do better in school. If this country really gave a shit about children, this would be at the top of the public-policy list.

I think that Dolly Parton was, for a lot of people, an ambassador of the "good" values people think of about the South: kindness, hospitality, can-do spirit, sharp and witty and down to earth. I think for a segment of people, too, she was theantithesis of a lot of noxious masculine country stuff.

Genuinely cannot believe it about Dolly. I grew up 40 minutes from her hometown, listening to her music, going to Dollywood all the time. She always seemed so much larger than life, and somehow death too.

This is horrifying. Someone plowed into a college cycling team when they were out riding, killing 2 and injuring 7. When I first opened the story the top comment blamed the cyclists--just for having the audacity to use bikes on a road--but it seems to have been deleted. apnews.com/article/mill...

We biked into the path of totality in rural Oregon for the 2017 eclipse. It was incredible: the world going dark, all the sounds changing. And the farmer who never stopped cutting hay. He just turned on the headlights of the tractor and kept driving
