Yes, I doubt it was spontaneous....I am seriously wondering if it's a dogwhistle for PHON types. It can be played off as something else for the mainstream but.... it would make sense, given they are pandering to that demo in other ways currently.

Yes, but people are circulating old photos like that anyway… and if they weren’t they’d make them up. It just doesn’t seem like a strong reason to me.

Any connection between right-wingers booing Welcomes to Country and our PM refusing to be welcomed with a floral garland in Tuvalu? I heard he just didn't want to look awkward or be memed but when you really think about it that's...ridiculous?! Is there a more sinister reason?

Palawa elder here, Kon you are always welcome on my traditional lands. I never give a welcome to country, only an acknowledgement of country. Why would I welcome the 40-60% of people who voted against the Voice. To you my friend, thank you, and welcome. 🙏🏾 🖤💛❤️

I feel so ashamed as a proud Greek Australian to see Greeks booing a Welcome To Country last night. Shame on us. The First Nations community of Melbourne deserves a formal apology for the behaviour of Greek Australians last night. #australiacup #Hellas #SouthMelbourne #MelbourneVictory

Universities were not traditionally built for profit. They were paid from taxes because we all knew that an educated workforce built a growing economy and strong communities. Once you only value $$, the working poor struggle with housing insecurity, literacy rates tank, and society fails.

My team just lost a wonderful colleague who’d been here for years, built community not in SYD or MEL & paid a small fortune to study. He went to an immigration appt & was told he couldn’t go to work the next day & to leave in 28 days. It was devastating for him & everyone in his community.

If Hanson "seems more and more like the de facto opposition leader", it's because legacy media - glosses over the racism - avoids testing her 'policies' - ignores disinformation that drives her support, and - rarely mentions PHON's #FarRight links. In short; keeps giving her an easy ride. #auspol

Yeah, there’s a bunch of ways that that character could work, it doesn’t need to be the same. In fact I’m not sure why there would be any point doing another adaptation if that was the goal.

I agree it would have been useful to delineate between those different uses/types in terms of risks and benefits, we need more from these conversations now. Pretty interesting quote from Professor Shafiabady though: if it were up to them they would ‘ban computers’. Just dropped in there casually!

Disturbing but enlightening thread re fascists and their peculiarities. Their impact on culture is not always a reflection of their power, it can go the other way too… they seek to undermine norms and popularise certain aesthetics so as to take/consolidate power more easily. Pay attention, #auspol.

Fascism is also about the pleasure of seeing unwanted bodies mutilated, tortured, killed. This has nothing to do with Hasan's crimes. It has to do with bringing back public lynchings. They're signaling to their base that they can now rejoice in the the death of undesirables.

As shocking as it is for the US to announce a public execution, I’m almost as shocked that there is an expert, law prof Deborah Denno, saying it could be a good idea for transparency and to educate etc. If someone was not disgusted by what happened with Pike, how will seeing a man shot change that?!

A young boy wrote to CS Lewis and asked him for advice on writing well. For me, learning not only to write well, but to (more importantly) communicate well, has been my secret weapon. I cultivated it also in my son—the ability to communicate effectively. Such a crucial and oft overlooked skill.
It is very hard to give any general advice about writing.
Here's my attempt.
December 14, 1959
(r) Turn off the Radio.
(2) Read all the good books you can, and avoid nearly all maga-zines.
(3) Always write (and read) with the ear, not the eye. You shd. hear every sentence you write as if it was being read aloud or spoken. If it does not sound nice, try again.
(4) Write about what really interests you, whether it is real things or imaginary things, and nothing else. (Notice this means that if you are interested only in writing you will never be a writer, because you will have nothing to write about...)
(5) Take great pains to be clear. Remember that though you start by knowing what you mean, the reader doesn't, and a single ill-chosen word may lead him to a total misunderstanding. In a story it is terribly easy just to forget that you have not told the reader something that he wants to know-the whole picture is so clear in your own mind that you forget that it isn't the same in his.
(6) When you give up a bit of work don't (unless it is hopelessly bad) throw it away. Put it in a drawer. It may come in useful later. Much of my best work, or what I think my best, is the rewriting of things begun and abandoned years earlier.
(7) Don't use a typewriter. The noise will destroy your sense of rhythm, which still needs years of training
(8) Be sure you know the meaning (or meanings) of every word you use.

Isn't it strange that the guilds and cinema groups pushed for a set number of films released each year, but nothing about ensuring workforces weren't impacted. Mergers always end up with mass layoffs. Shame on these greedy organisations.
