“like a poetry of boogers stuck to your face”!
LAMENTING A PARTY
Like an absurd round of applause in the middle of a funeral the echo of my river appears, overturning your boat, and the night out drinking with friends turns into the stench of a dry rat playing cards.
The wall's skin sweats out my name; you lose perspective in the distance;
I'm the fire that consumes the stroller and you the child saved by many hands
dirty, but hands nevertheless.
The boneless punishment chugs down your laugh; like a poetry of boogers stuck to your face I blind myself to the world
I plow through branches in an abandoned language: my body is a spyglass, my veins, sleepless oars.
The paper I'm writing on slits me; whoever reads these words is making them up.
I am the ghost of the funny face you cast into oblivion, I am the beakless swan who eats through his wings.

And Suddenly It's the first of the Month

you mail the rent check,
watch jasmine blossoms fall from the bush
magnolias open like saucers from fine porcelain place settings.
How much longer will we decide to love one another?
An ex once told me if I ever left him for another man he would wish us the best, then take everything in our motherfucking house
-and torch it.
Take this view of the rose of Sharon at the far end of the porch Take this crumpled paper napkin, this cork.
How much can any of us carry?
Just yesterday, a great blue heron alighted on the cottonwood
at the end of Jim's yard,
right near Boggy Creek, right in the middle of our barbecue, big wings hovering on the smallest of branches.
And all of us, even the children, turned from the fire to watch it.

The old heat is in the heart. John Wieners
Procrastination

I feel tomorrow it may be. Tonight. Later
ah when the world is ripe then will descend
o letters of fire fall on my head.

Not now with my arm against the hard brown desk.
Go on: it has begun. The old heat is in the heart.
This is the new start you long awaited.

The traceries of feeling interlock the chest.

The eyes become onyx and pearl.
The night falls at noon.
Too soon leaves break from their branches.

They whistle in your ears.
The spirit is near, and the mind
grasps upward to the full sun

wheeling in the heavens.
At one with the cosmos, you are a star shining
In the blue of the day-time sky-light.

‼️‼️‼️
Amy Finn, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Toronto, told me that "part of the magic of how kids learn is that they have less knowledge of what they're going to experience and fewer expectations about what's going to be relevant. They don't have that adult filter of strategically extracting things from their experience, and so they retain a lot of unexpected details that adults would find irrelevant. That allows them to be creative in ways that adults are not creative.
" The child
brain's tendency toward delightful non sequitur and unpredictable meanderings is not aligned with an L.L.M.'s orientation toward speed and sleekness and summary, toward frictionless, rational outcomes. (An obsession with
outcomes-over-process is also a hallmark of the universally loathed style of instruction known as "teaching to the test," which began taking hold in American classrooms in the early two-thousands, after the No Child Left Behind Act tied federal funding to standardized assessments.)
