The GOP has had it in for Bear Ears for a decade. They hated that Obama designated it; Chaffetz tried to make it a huge scandal. It's unfettered capitalism, yes, but also fierce anti-Native racism. The two are eternally linked in American history.

The Bears, at this moment, have three guys who are capable to excellent at playing quarterback. That's three more than during like 95% of franchise history.

One thing I've started doing -- after owning up to my own failings, ongoing -- is asking friends/others making sexist/misogynist/violent comments to explain the "joke." Why is that funny? I don't get it. Explain the joke. It is unambiguous and makes a clear point, without being too aggressive.

I know these movements are dangerous and their apocalyptic misogyny is in the highest levels of our government but I just have trouble taking anything seriously when your FEATURED SPEAKER is Sean Davis, who 99% of peope have never heard of and half of that 1% just thinks "mommy milky."

I was writing about the destabilizing effects of US involvement in Yemen from like 2004, and even I don't think the GWoT was a primary cause of the civil war(s). Lots of impacts can be connected, but that's true for everything in history.

Comerica had long past the point where it was thought of as a corporate name. I couldn't have even told you it was a bank, just where Detroit played. This is just sludge and will never be associated with the Tigers. I root for a team that plays at Guaranteed Rate, so I speak from experience.

I really, really hate everything about "Ole Miss" and everything it stands for and all its symbology and its hateful smug frathead racist rich kid assholes, all of whom would have been hooting at kids trying to integrate schools in the 60s, but Lane Kiffin sucks so bad that I'm cheering for them.

Had a long dream I was reading (and watching?) @juliusgoat.bsky.social new (nonexistent, I think) novel, which I described to a friend as "potentially treacly, but in his hands, nearly euphonic." It was especially strange because I had to look that word up when I woke up. Still, good book.

All these years later I still can't quite believe that the big "cold open" the show-within-the-show did to prove that they were not going to be cowed by censorship, the thing that the whole episode revolved around, that every agreed had to light the world on fire, was a Gilbert and Sullivan parody.

Morality aside (which, don't put it aside, ever), does Talrico think people who believe his polite statements about trans rights to be an abomination unto the Lord will be like "oh, he's since modified them, I'll give the young man a vote!"

I guess I understand the politics of saying "TRUMP GIVES YOU MONEY" but this isn't even "if we win, the economy will continue to boom, so we'll be able to afford it." It's "we have the money, but if you let me down you don't get it." Which is evangelical, and maddening.

The charitable explanation is that it makes people think that they didn't have to work hard, which they obviously did, even with all the breaks and advantages, and ESPN sees it as their job to boost American tennis. I instinctively root against Pegula because of this, but I'm being charitable.

Even if this wasn't hideously racist -- which is obviously, undeniably is -- the idea of something "inviting scrutiny," as if the the story wasn't creating its own proposition, is as far away from "do(ing) the fucking news" as you can possibly get.

There are horrors that we knew were coming; there are absurdities we didn't predict yet aren't surprising. Defiantly saying "Lake Ontario" is not either of those.

I'm not even a Tom Petty fan. I think the day he died was the only day of my life I put his music on deliberately, as opposed to hearing him omnipresently. But Roy Orbison clearly liked him, and that's enough to say that, while all taste is subjective and idiosyncratic, this take is wrong.

This is the same way I feel about being "proud to be an American." I didn't do shit! I was born here. I could be proud to use the benefits this birth incurred to me to do good, but pride at an accident of fate? Fuck that.

Man, so many. Gombrowicz's "Diaries." @colsonwhitehead.com "The Intuitionist." @stephengrahamjones.com opened my eyes to a whole new kind of literature. "Il Rombo," by Esther Kinsky, just translated last year, shattered my world. As this prompt wisely states, formation through books is lifelong.

The thing with "Lake America" is, in addition to being stupid and childish, it is SO stupid and childish. Like, they could have said "Lake Louis Armstrong" or "Lake Mark Twain" and sneeringly asked why people hate Great Americans. But he of course picked the most thuddingly stupid name.

This is how I received and knew her growing up in the 80s, not understanding anything beyond the jokes. Knowing who she actually was, and the greatness of her music, was part of a process of understanding how much received "wisdom" was hateful sexist bullshit. RIP to a truly great human and artist
