This extraordinary map for "Moby Dick" was made in 1956 by artist Everett Henry for a *calendar*! Its caption read: “We hear the call of 'Moby Dick,' still echoing today for anyone who yearns to feel the magic and terror, the stress and calm of the sea and its ships.” blogs.loc.gov/maps/2026/09...

Here's Bébé, a small French cat who has been around books his entire life.
A baby black cat, on his first day in his new home, sits upon a copy of War and Peace, which sits upon a copy of The Complete Cartoons of the New Yorker.Same cat, six years later, having a nap while draped over short stacks of books.

Ever since the last time I left it, I've dreamed of returning to Dublin for another bookshop crawl. Finally booked tickets. I'll arrive early on Dec. 14th with an empty suitcase and a grin. Next up, arranging a hotel within walking distance of both @chaptersbookstore.bsky.social and the Palace Bar.

I'm just amazed at what I've uncovered in the archives. In this picture, the handsome gent on the right is my father's cousin Roger. He was a machine-gunner on a French bomber during WWII. His sister Jeanine escaped occupied France and fled to England, where she joined the Forces françaises libres.

Bright side: Apparently, the summer-long heatwave is due to break tonight. I'll beat the last of it by going to see The Conversation on the big screen. In rural France. I'm just a lucky so-and-so. And I just did a headcount of the gang of cats who live next to my house. They're all good.

Today's book haul has made me so happy. I've already read King Kong Theory in French, but I have a thing about translators and their work. This one was done by the great Frank Wynne. I've been looking forward to the new Emily Wilson, so I dived right into that sea.
Two books rest upon a wooden table. (L) King Kong Theory by Virginie Despentes, translated into English by Frank Wynne and published by Fitzcarraldo Editions. (R) Emily Wilson's Crossing the Wine-Dark Sea published by Profile Books.

When I moved to France, the U.S. was bad but not broken. It's been quite an experience watching my old country burn itself down. Here's a slice of American dystopia: I can't send postcards and letters to the US anymore. Everything must be registered, and that's no guarantee it'll get through customs

On books that help me ignore a heatwave. The Eve Babitz letters arrived this morning, and I've already slipped between its cool covers. When I opened the door to the postman this morning he said, "Let me guess, a book?" Indeed. "It's very effective in the heat!" Also yes.

A publishing industry inside joke from 1928. If you've ever read a book from Alfred A. Knopf, you will be familiar with their little essays about typeface. This is from Meaning No Offence, by John Riddell, from The John Day Company (a competitor, as you might guess).

Small Kindnesses ~ Danusha Laméris 💛
Danusha Laméris
SMALL KINDNESSES

I've been thinking about the way, when you walk down a crowded aisle, people pull in their legs to let you by. Or how strangers still say "bless you" when someone sneezes, a leftover
from the Bubonic plague. "Don't die," we are saying.
And sometimes, when you spill lemons from your grocery bag, someone else will help you pick them up. Mostly, we don't want to harm each other.
We want to be handed our cup of coffee hot, and to say thank you to the person handing it. To smile at them and for them to smile back. For the waitress to call us honey when she sets down the bowl of clam
chowder,
and for the driver in the red pick-up truck to let us pass.
We have so little of each other, now. So far from tribe and fire. Only these brief moments of exchange.
What if they are the true dwelling of the holy, these fleeting temples we make together when we say, "Here, have my seat," "Go ahead-you first," "I like your hat."

The French novelist Paul de Kock was a "felinophile enragé." His house was surrounded by a high wall, within which his cats roamed freely. When neighbors found a stray, they didn't even bother to ring his bell, but simply tossed the cat over the wall to join the others.

Took a leisurely drive to a nearby village to check out their little free library. I like to spike them with excellent books, and occasionally I find something good to take home. This one was sweet, but in dire shape. I swept up a bit, and am thinking of making a project out of cleaning it up.
