She/Her, 少し日本語, probably nerding out about ecology or tokusatsu right now. Clinging by my fingernails to a deeply held belief that, as the late, great Paul Wellstone said, "We all do better when we all do better."

Minnesota is consistently in the 10 states for happiness, GDP, and liveability. We're top 5 in education. And we're 1st in voting. I don't care what an illiterate old man from Queens thinks about a state he couldn't find on a map of Minnesota.

Hello Bone Colleagues,
I have invented a new type of ankle and I'm very excited to show it to you. Early raccoon trials suggest a 60% increase in scurrying speed and dramatic increases in fine motor banditry. I know we are not supposed to create super raccoons, but I think you'll change your mind and professional ethics when you see how cute they are. I believe we are on the cusp of a new era in advanced human scurrying because if medical science has taught me anything, it's that improvements in raccoons correspond 1:1 to improvements in humans.

One of my all-time favorite animated characters, Gromit, born from practical and budget limitations. Because, of course. News to me! thank you for your latest article @ani-obsessive.bsky.social animationobsessive.substack.com/p/wallace-an...
Gromit turned into a dog really early on, since Park found dogs easier to model. And the character's dialogue was cut due to animation difficulties in the first week of the shoot. "That's when I realized I could do everything with the eyes. Gromit was suddenly born. He didn't need a mouth. He became a very introvert and very intelligent dog," Park remembered.

Science fiction authors designing aliens need to aspire to at least the level of weirdness of a real bucket orchid. Coryanthes macrantha in my greenhouse this morning. Flower is approx 15 cm wide, 10 cm tall. 🌴🌱
A bucket orchid in shades of orange and yellow. The bucket is formed from the distal end of the labellum and the column. Glands drip liquid into the bucket. Bees falling into the bucket can only escape through a hole at one side where they will be forced into contact with the pollen and stigma at the end of the column. The hole is pretty large, so the bees must be equally big. The sepals look like big wings made of tissue paper that counterbalance the bucket. The base of the labellum where it connects to the rest of the flower looks like a weirdly ridged orange alien penis.

I think part of it is that Rider is seen as Dark and Edgy, in a way that will appeal to 9 year olds who think they're Too Old and Too Cool for Sentai, but also actual adults glom onto that vibe, even when it's still clearly a children's show for children. Ultra doesn't market itself that way.

There was also the era before GPS units were widely available where you could go onto sites like Yahoo Maps or Mapquest and get directions that you could print out. However, woe betide you if you missed a turn in those directions, because you'd then be lost.

Bobcat Moran @bobcatmoran.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Locally, we'd only need directions to get to the closest major road, and we knew how all of those intersected with each other - my dad used to sketch out maps for me before I learned them. On trips, we relied on paper maps. The person in the passenger seat would take on Navigation Duty.

I was the Designated Navigator for multiple family road trips as a kid, and on a trip to San Francisco, I inadvertently, because the paper map did not show elevation, chose some INSANELY steeply hilly routes to get from Point A to Point B. At least my mom wasn't driving a stick shift.

Sometimes you go on co-op bombing missions, which means there's a second person sitting behind the pilot with a bunch of loose bombs rolling around in the footwell, and they have to pick them up with their hands, light them, and drop them over the side of the plane.
