Accelerating prepared students in middle school math has positive effects in high school and college, including closing gender gaps in core STEM majors (sci/math/engineering). Put differently, failure to provide acceleration exacerbates such gaps and generates lots of lost intellectual potential.

I've met a lot of very smart people in my life. Few of them wanted to take over anything. They wanted to spend time on one or two things that fascinated them...and for everyone they didn't care about to leave them alone. The mediocre seem more inclined to wanting to take things over.

I've been thinking about Olivia Miles' transition to the WNBA. Her last college game was on March 30th. She played her first WNBA game on May 9th. She has played 74 games in the last 9 1/2 months. She has acclimated, thrived and even improved on several levels while facing tougher competition.

The idea: use small logs (10–23 cm), too small for regular sawmills, as feedstock for mass timber (CLT/GLT) production instead. Using IMPLAN modeling, we found this could generate 365 jobs and $105M in regional economic output in just the first year. 3/6

We found 69% of the forest in the Malheur, Umatilla & Wallowa-Whitman National Forests exceeds fire-resilient conditions, meaning it needs thinning. That's ~680k ha of small-diameter Ponderosa & Lodgepole pine that's currently unmerchantable... but it doesn't have to be. 2/6
