No matter where you shop, you're getting screwed by Amazon. Amazon has found a way to make everything you buy - at Target, at a mom-and-pop shop, even direct from the manufacturer - more expensive. And they're not the only one: Expedia's done the same thing, but for hotel rooms.
A faded, scratched postcard advertising the 'Edge of Town Motel.' Next to the motel sign is a vast pink piggybank, out of whose slot rises a motel key on a diamond keychain, emblazoned with a metallic dollar-sign.

I think more and more that @eduede.bsky.social has a crucial point. "Intelligence," "understanding," "writing" — AI is fragmenting these concepts by putting us in a position to see that the phenomena we thought they fused are only *correlated* and can be unbundled.

Text: Saw a talk by Eamon Duede this weekend (citation details below) that argued what academics actually gain from AI, at least philosophically, is an ability to unbundle certain concepts that have been correlated in practice. (Such as discovery and understanding.)

For more details on the framework, see our preprint (now submitted to Nature Climate Change) here:
cdrxiv.org
Sustained Neutralization of the Warming Response to Emissions through Multiple Mitigation Strategies – CDRXIV
Emissions abatement and carbon dioxide removal (CDR) are critical to achieving a global net-zero scenario under which temperatures are stabilized. In the near term, organizations pursuing net-zero targets may compensate for remaining emissions by combining short-lived climate pollutant (SLCP) abatement with CDR. Because these mitigation strategies have climate impacts across distinct timescales, they provide complementary tools to address both near-term and long-term warming. However, the distinct timescales mean that, to ensure emissions remain compensated, accounting approaches must evaluate each strategy’s impact across time. We propose an approach based on sustained warming neutralization. By translating emission and mitigation impacts into a single metric - the continuous global mean surface temperature response - it ensures the warming response to an emission is neutralized in the near- and long-term. We then introduce a method to design mitigation portfolios using the approach. Ultimately, the approach structurally aligns emission compensation claims with global temperature stabilization goals.

there were always tech assholes (lots of them) but paul graham was the instigator of an enormous cultural shift that gives us the insidiously abusive tech world we have today bc he began the use of flattery at an industrial scale, to replace the hacker spirit with venture capital
Not only is the "startup industry" full of narcissists, it's full of narcissists because it is pathologically narcissistic:

- The idea that you "deserve" lots of money not as a result of achievement, but for something you have not even done yet;
- that businesses, industries, and people, who have money and power now didn't "earn" it — the history, details and procedures are irrelevant — so you should "disrupt" them;
- that "entrepreneurship" (and keyboard-jockeying, of all things) is the arena where heroes and villains are forged;
- that startups (by dint of …what, exactly?) will eat the world and inherit the earth;
- that greed — for attention, for recognition, for "impact", for importance, for historical significance, and also for money — is good;
- that programmers are special, gifted creatures, like lions on the savannah, or like artists but without all the pesky painting and apprenticeship, or engineers without the need for pesky actual engineering qualifications

New for @climate.us — five instrumental global temperature records aligned to the same pre-industrial baseline. Original data from the UK Met Office & JMA: climate.metoffice.cloud/temperature.... ds.data.jma.go.jp/tcc/tcc/prod... Globe by DSCOVR:EPIC: epic.gsfc.nasa.gov #climate #dataviz
Graph showing global average temperature anomaly from 1850 through 2025. The graph combines five datasets, each derived independently. Temperatures stayed fairly consistent from 1850 to about 1920, then started rising. This matches the growth of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere from the burning of fossil fuels. Temperatures cooled slightly from about 1950 to 1970, the result of a rise in aerosols (also predominantly released by the burning of fossil fuels).

Below the graph is a portion of the Earth (North America) as seen by the EPIC instrument on the DSCOVR satellite.
