Not In Our Name (NION) Women @nionwomen.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
Feminism doesn't require women to see trans+ people as the enemy. For many of us, feminism has always meant challenging inequality, standing alongside people whose rights are under threat, and refusing to accept that one group's equality must come at another's expense. That's our feminism too.

“I have grown incredibly exasperated at the portrayal of ‘gender critical’ perspectives as representing all women when my feminism has ALWAYS been inclusive and intersectional.”

Today’s poem is called ‘Love Excels’.
[image description: a poem embedded in an Excel spreadsheet with the words contained within individual cells. Line 3 has words in a single merged cell. Line 4 has text wrapping applied. Line 8 has filters applied to each word]

Love Excels

Let’s spread ourselves on sheets of love
and turn our data into poetry.
Our cells shall merge themselves together
As you wrap your text around me.

Our sum is greater than our parts,
let’s crunch our figures without compunction.
Remove this filter from my heart –
you give me form and function.

We shall frolic among the formulae,
pivot our tables now and often.
I will total all your rows
and you can add my column.

Today’s poem is called ‘Bags’.
Bags

you have bags
of bags

collecting bags
must be your bag

because you have bags
with nothing in them
except bags,
inside of which are other bags,
full of bags

you have enough bags for life
for a hundred lifetimes –
if there was a prize for the total number of tote bags
you would totes have it
in the bag

don’t know why you need so many bags
when all you ever put in them
are other bags

Ten years ago, ‘You Took the Last Bus Home’ was published. It was my first collection of poetry and incredibly, it’s still going strong. To celebrate the anniversary, I thought I’d share a poem from it every day this month, starting with the title poem.
You Took the Last Bus Home

you took
the last bus home
don’t know how
you got it through the door

you’re always doing amazing stuff

like the time
you caught that train

A book cover. Wayfarers: The Incredible Story of Animal Migration, by Lev Parikian. It’s mostly blue, with swirling patterns representing movement, and stylised images of various migrating animals (butterflies, terns, a whale, bats, wildebeest, dragonflies, penguins, an arctic fox) dotted about the place.

A wildflower array of the Asteraceae still blooming here at Madrigal despite drought and relentless heat — yellow, white, purple, prickly, feathery and thistle-down soft. Different weather. The same wonderfully sprawling family #WildflowerHour #DaisyFamily
Botanical-style wildflower array arranged on handmade white paper and titled ‘The Daisy Family ~ Madrigal August 2026’. Individual stems gathered from the meadow are laid out and handwritten labels identify Bristly Oxtongue, Nipplewort, Fleabane, Daisy, Hawkbit, Ragwort, Noble Yarrow, Sneezewort, Field Thistle, Oxeye Daisy, Knapweed and Chicory. Yellow, white, purple and blue flowers mingle with seed heads, feathers, butterfly cocoons, a bumblebee, peacock butterfly wing and colourful snail shells — small treasures gathered among the flowers.

Today is Venn Day, in celebration of the mathematician John Venn, born on this day in 1834. To commemorate the occasion, here’s a poem in the form of a Venn Diagram.
Poem title: At the Intersection

The poem is divided into two overlapping circles.

The left-hand circle is titled ‘me’ and the text reads:
the day we
went out to have
an ice-cream, we said nothing
just let our silence melt in
the air as we walked across the common
our love never tiring at all

The right-hand circle is titled ‘you’ and the text reads:
we should
have talked it over but
nothing ever seems to get
in your fat head. You are so
common that I wish we’d never met
at all and I’d married Tim instead

In the intersection of the poem (where the two circles overlap), the text reads:
we
have
nothing
in
common
at all
