It's interesting that budget chair Strauss doesn't think providing food is a "charter responsibility." I wonder how recently he's read the charter. Politicians love to say "public safety is our number 1 charter responsibility," but actually the charter lists "health" first, followed by "safety."

A big failure. The argument about streaming the traffic cameras into the real-time crime center was that all the feeds were publicly available anyway, a fact that we now know to be untrue. That this happened at all erodes public trust in city government, and in surveillance cameras specifically.

How accurate is vote-by-mail? Whatcom County, WA just conducted a hand recount of 50,451 ballots in a race separated by just 4 votes: "In the end, it was a 100% match. Every vote came out the same, every time. There were no allegations of lost or fraudulent votes, or missed votes in the machines."

I am the mom of a wonderfully active child. As she grows, I want her to find belonging, joy, and friendship at school and, if she chooses, while competing in school sports.

The Supreme Court's decision yesterday allowing states to exclude transgender athletes from women’s and girls’ sports teams threatens this vision for trans kids and families, and for all of us who want sports to be a welcoming and life-affirming experience for all our kids.

Regardless of this decision, students in Washington continue to have a right to play on the sports team aligned with their gender identity. But we must be vigilant in continuing to protect all students’ right to be free from gender discrimination. Let’s keep Washington safe and welcoming for all students.

A sleight of hand that the Seattle Times Editorial Board does in its column today: downplay the impact of SEPA appeals, and yet fail to actually articulate what if any "legitimate problems" have been sorted out by the appeals that have been successful.
Is the hearing examiner besieged with flimsy environmental challenges gumming up progress?
At a briefing earlier this month, a council staffer noted there were only 28 SEPA appeals to the hearing examiner from 2016-2026. Of those, 19 were dismissed or withdrawn. But here’s the thing: They were dispensed with fairly quickly — the average appeal time for dismissed cases was 69 days; 52 days for those later withdrawn.
By comparison, the few cases found to have merit took much longer. The single case where an environmental statement was sent back for review took 374 days.
In other words, where there was a legitimate problem, the process appropriately took time to sort it out.

it's wild watching ppl do the work of wealthy lakefront homeowners & leveraging social justice language to do it. a free program open to all that happens to slightly inconvenience some of the most regressive, status quo voices in the city is literally the opposite of "gentrification"
CYCLIST: We really need some bike lanes around here
NIMBY GUY: Only privileged "tech bros" can afford to bike all over the city
C: Privileged? It's literally the cheapest way to get around!
NG: Gentrifiers like you move in and demand all kinds of bike infrastructure that normal ppl don't want
C: Gentrifier? I'm living in the last apartment i'll ever be able to afford in this city while your home value just doubled!
NG: I read that bike lanes cause more congestion which could actually *increase* emissions
C: Ah, I see, you're using ideas you don't even care about to defend a 1950s-era NIMBY agenda, knowing that gullible Seattle liberals will fall for it if you use the right terminology
NG: All I know is it's *highly problematic* the way bicyclists "other" car drivers
C: That'll be all for me, thanks
