I’m continuing A Personal Anthology but also thinking about a similar but different project around the novella. So if novellas (novellae?) are your thing, or if you even have strong thoughts about them, and if you have a favourite novella, then do let me know!

Engaging with an existing trope or plot pattern, isn't about simplicity or robot formulas. It's rather about an acknowledgement of the history of your field, a constant intertextual conversation with (or against) the meanings that have built up around certain tropes.

A constant recommendation.
J is for …
Jansson
One of my favourite imagined places to inhabit as unhappy
child was Moominvalley. I am still an unofficial ambassador
for it, telling young writers I mentor that they will struggle
to find a better constructed fictional world. I push those
writers into reading Tove Jansson because she makes
words dance, because she makes locations shimmer with
a sense of nature holding within it the not-quite-real that
may manifest at any moment. I push because she is one
of the finest storytellers, because her imagination still
pushes me. I hope that is all in Hookland, as no book ever
taught me more about the power of dark absence in a text
than Moominvalley In November. While the Moomins may
sometimes overshadow Jansson’s stunning lines as illus
trator, the sheer fairytale menace of her early paintings,
they cannot obscure her power to create spaces where the
mind may walk in hope of wonder

Picked up these classics yesterday in Khan's bookshop in Kilkenny. Normally a happy occasion to fill some gaps on the shelves at bargain prices, but this was a closing-down sale, with Khan driven out of business by rising costs, particularly electricity. Who needs books when we've got data centres?
A stack of six books lying flat, showing the spines. From top to bottom: The Demolished Man, by Alfred Bester; The Seven Dials Mystery, by Agatha Christie; The Glimpses of the Moon, by Edmund Crispin; Flow My Tears, The Policeman Said, by Philip K. Dick; The Three Stigmata of Palme Eldritch, by Philip K. Dick; and Northwest of Earth, by C.L. Moore.

An occupational hazard of research is finding details that inspire new books. Like finding out the Dublin franchise roll (1468 - 1512) records female apprentice armourers, butchers, justices, tanners and vintners. Does Sister Wake need a sidequel about a female armourer in a world of Celtic-kaiju?

Plus, people seem to forget that there were groups in history that fought against this sort of thinking. Abolitionists, anyone? Yes, some were still racist, but many *weren't*. Were they not "people of their time"? So why do we give historical racists a free pass? Populations don't all think alike.

This is also true of Humanities journals and those of us who publish in them.
Screenshot from Twitter, I guess? I saw it on Facebook.

Anyway, its a social media response to a question by one Louie who asks "What's something that seems obvious within your profession, but the general public seems to misunderstand?"

The answer comes from one Dr. Holly Witterman and reads: "That $35 that scientific journals charge you to read a paper goes 100% to the publisher, 0% to the authors. If you just email us to ask for our papers, we are allowed to send them to you for free, and we will be genuinely delighted to do so".
