We found this fantastic old colour shot, possibly taken at some point between the end of the 1960s to mid-1970s. Zoom in for the interesting eye paint of the iguanodon, and a pretty mucky megalosaurus - which may have been just about to enter its "red paint" phase.. www.flickr.com/photos/found...

New paper out today! Led by Daniel Schwarz, we retrodeformed the skull and reconstructed the cranio-mandibular musculature of the giant stem-amphibian Mastodonsaurus giganteus. Our results show that Mastodonsaurus had a powerful bite and a crocodile- like bite-and-hold feeding style.

An extremely good day to you all from this Pachycephalosaurus statue - which was located in a park in an actual town called Dinosaur, in Colorado (Pop. 243) (Photo from 1991, part of the John Margolies Roadside America photo archive, www.loc.gov/pictures/ite...)
colour photo. close-up of the head of the dino statue. it has the domed head, and some lumps of armour, but "lumpy" would be a good word to summarise this very rough messily-sculpted affair, which is dark brown with a "normal" white and black eye

Ok, time for a thread about what I saw yesterday at #CrystalPalace. As you can see, just about everything has been repaired and re-painted, and in places (like the previously misidentified Xiphodon) re-positioned. It looks fantastic and you have to check it out, even if you've visited before...

I admire a certain perverse need some people have to reiterate that the @cpdinosaurs.bsky.social are not accurate by the standards of current (or 1970s) science, no matter the context.
'Hawkins' models of the Iguanodon mistakenly portray the large thumb spike as a nose horn; also, the dinosaurs are shown as quadrupeds rather than bipeds and these mistakes are faithfully reproduced in the book. The book is no longer in print.'

Now THIS is how you start a newspaper article From the Illustrated Crystal Palace Gazette, 1st Feb 1854, recounting the Iguanodon dinner of NYE 1853 (Somebody please please please make a “Osteo-Necromancer Richard Owen” Warhammer miniature 🙏
“YOUR COMPANY IS REQUESTED IN THE IGUANODON.
GENTLE reader, have you the nerve to put
"Time" on one side and follow the osteo-necro-mancer Owen, to the Ultima Thule of creation-to stand with him in his magic circle of skulls and marrow-bones, while he calls up the huge reptile hulks, dead and buried before Adam was born - to accept his terrible invitation to meet
a few select believers in his occult ontology, at dinner, inside the head of an awful lizard?”

Our very best 100th birthday wishes to Sir David Attenborough 🦖🎂🦖 Sir David has visited the Dinos in the past, and we were thrilled to have his support back in 2020 - when the Crystal Palace Dinosaurs were added to the Historic England Heritage at Risk Register (Letter wording in ALT text)
“The Crystal Palace Dinosaurs are recognised internationally as important monuments in the history of science. This is where public outreach of science began.

I am delighted to join with the Friends of Crystal Palace Dinosaurs in welcoming Historic England's decision to give these sculptures the protection they so badly need.

They are, after all, the first attempts to visualise the dramatic creatures from the distant past in the country where their remains were first discovered, recognised and named.

David Attenborough”

Happy birthday to Zofia Kielan-Jaworowska (1925-2015) a Polish #paleobiologist, famous for a series of Polish-Mongolian expeditions she lead from 1963-1971 to the Gobi desert! 🧪🐡👩🏼‍🔬 #histsci There she discovered dinosaurs including the Deinocheirus, plus she & team found the “Fighting Dinosaurs”
My linocut portrait of Zofia Kielan-Jaworowska shows her as in slacks and sleeveless button down with collar turned in a 3/4 view with her right arm extended and left arm bent and resting on the small of her back. She has short hair and appears brightly lit from the left side. In front of her are the Fighting Dinosaurs fossils: a protoceratops and velociraptor entwined. Above her hand is a Cretaceous rodent Catopsbaatar and behind her is a Deinocheirus dinosaur. She is in the field in Mongolia with mountains in the distance. The print is made in a gradient of sandy golden green through dark green-brown through a dark rust from the bottom to the top.
