For all that it's been barely reported in the UK press, it's still hard to understate the importance of the stance @labourunionsuk.bsky.social has taken on trans and non-binary rights this week. Every single trade union affiliated to the party of government has stood up and said we will not comply.
Joint statement from National TULO

Solidarity with the trans and non-binary community

Labour's 11 affiliated trade unions stand in total solidarity with the trans and non-binary community.

Trans rights are human rights, and trans rights are workers' rights.

We in the trade union movement will do all we can to stand up for our trans members and all our trans siblings, to protect them from persecution, harassment and attack.

The government must act now to protect all trans people, to make sure their rights are protected, expanded and upheld in our workplaces and communities.

Spectacular Roman octopus mosaic from the floor of the women’s changing room at the Central Baths in ancient Herculaneum. 📷 by me #MosaicMonday #Archaeology
My photo shows a monochrome Roman floor mosaic depicting an octopus. The octopus is composed of small black tesserae (tiles) and has eight writhing arms with suckers and narrow curling tips. It is set against a white tesserae background. This octopus detail comes from a monochrome marine mosaic featuring Triton with a cherub and various sea creatures which include the octopus, dolphins and a cuttlefish. The normalisation of anti-asylum feeling has been much furthered by Governments insisting that spontaneous arrivals are "illegal" which is accurate only insofar as they and Parliament are prepared to ignore the spirit of the international law their predecessors championed and which still binds them.

Summer reading challenge 🤝 RNIB Library The Summer Reading Challenge is a free, fun summer activity to do with your children. This year’s theme is ‘read to the beat so we’ve picked some of our faves from our library to inspire you. Check them out rnib.in/SummerReadChallenge2026
‘Summer reading challenge, read to the beat.’ Five small book covers are dotted over the screen. An arrow points to suggest you should swipe and continue reading to find out what these books are.Book cover for Lucy Edwards book Ella Jones vs the Battle Noise. The cover shows a young, red haired girl and her guide dog in a small circle full of lightning. They look like they’re on an adventure. Braille faintly covers the cover. “Age 9+ Ella Jones must face the god Homodos, who is hunting Hercules' famous shield. His plan is to throw the world into chaos by increasing battle-noise until it's unbearable. Ella is the hero the world needs.” A book cover for ‘The Horne Section Make Some Noise’ is covered in music notes, instruments with smiley faces and a small image of the Horne Section. “For 9+ The Horne Section, tells you everything you need to know to be a music genius. With funny tales, absurd history and unbelievable facts, this mind-blowing guide to music can help anyone become a sound-making sensation.”A book cover for Beth O’Brien’s Wolf Siren. An illustration of a very small young girl standing in the woods in a red, hooded coat. Two, large black wolves stand around her staring at her. In the background, tree trunks fade into the background. “Age 9+ A vibrant, evocative and magical debut which centers a positive, empowered disabled character at the heart of a reimagining of Little Red Riding Hood. The woods are hiding a secret, but then so is Red.”

If you'd like something even more dangerous, our archive is so old that we don't use these fancy modern rolling stacks. Ours are attached to a motorised chain that runs the length of the room. This means sometimes they like to move by themselves just a little, enough to keep you on edge.
Rolling stacks in the archive with some lovely old archive boxes on them. On the right of the image you can see the handles that have to be pulled to move the stacks, activating the connection with the chain beneath the floor.

"Gathering" by artist Michele Poirier-Mozzone
The oil painting captures a dreamlike, bird's-eye perspective of five women swimming together in turbulent, sun-drenched water. Rather than rendering precise bodily anatomy, the artist heavily utilizes expressive brushstrokes and a vibrant palette of turquoise, magenta, and amber to illustrate how water naturally bends light and skews forms. The figures, clad in colorful swimsuits, seamlessly dissolve into fluid abstractions of shimmering patterns, ripples, and reflections, evoke a powerful sense of weightlessness, nostalgic summer memories, and quiet immersion.
