It's Friday and therefore nearly the weekend and this little chap could not be more delighted!
We are looking at a close up of a walking stick which is fashioned from a stick. It is incised with a cartoon tree like creature with spiky hair, branch arms and a smiley face. The creatures nose is part of a bump in the walking stick. The illustration is then inked in.

#FossilFriday It’s easy to see why Cotham Marble is often referred to as ‘landscape marble’. This Late Triassic limestone from the Bristol area is a microbialite. Detail from a specimen about 10 cm thick on display at the Natural History Museum, London.

A gorgeous specimen for #FossilFriday : the internal cast of a Jurassic bivalve (Pleuromya cf. uniformis), turned into a talisman with a religious Islamic inscription : ‘There is no god but Allāh [and] Muḥammad is His Prophet’ #PaleoSky ⚒️🏺🧪🦑🦕
Fig. 1. Pleuromya cf. uniformis (Sowerby 1813), Jurassic, Morocco. Internal mould of articulated specimen bearing a religious inscription in high relief. Museo Geominero, Madrid, catalogue number MGM-7809X. (a) Left valve view; (b) right valve view; (c) anterior view; (d) dorsal view; and (e) detail showing striations visible on the surface of the letters (left arrow) and how a fissure in the rock also affects the letter (right arrows), indicating that the letters were carved in high relief and do not represent surface adherences of any foreign material. The thick patina of dirt that covered the specimen, originally dark grey in colour, was removed by washing with detergents, alternating with immersions in hydrogen peroxide.

It's October, so you know what that means - all things ghosts & ghouls! The Danse Macabre (Dance of Death) is a popular allegory from the medieval period that considered the universality of death & frailness of life. A personification of Death summons the living to dance to their graves.
Death, as a skeleton, plays a pipe to lead other skeletons to their graves, while dancing.

Fabulous fragment of an ancient Egyptian wall relief with three bears and an oil jar. The paint has survived some 4,500 years! Limestone relief from the Pyramid Temple of Sahure, Old Kingdom, 5th Dynasty, c. 2496-2483 BC. Neues Museum, Berlin 📷 by me #ReliefWednesday #Archaeology
My photo shows a circa 4,500-year-old limestone relief with some well-preserved paint in places, from the funerary temple of Sahure at Abusir, measuring 39 × 35 × 8.5 cm. It shows three bears (partial view only) and a tall one-handled pottery vessel, across two registers. The upper register at left, shows the two leds and hindquarters of a bear, and at right, a bear’s lowered head, chest, and foreleg, painted mid-brown. The lower register at left shows a tall, dark-reddish-brown pottery vessel with a long neck and single handle, and at right, the lowered head, neck, shoulder, and top of foreleg of a dark-brown bear. The bears wear collars tethered by ropes to looped fixtures in the ground. The fragment comes from a wall scene depicting tributes from the Levant. Bears were not native to Egypt. The bears represented are Syrian brown bears (Ursus arctos syriacus), which were quite common in Levantine mountain regions in antiquity. They were kept as exotic animals in enclosures by Egyptian kings, and also hunted.

It was speculated in the 17th century that this newly discovered Middle Jurassic fossil, likely from a Megalosaurus, might belong to a Roman war elephant or a biblical giant. In 1763, naturalist Richard Brookes noted the obvious & named the fossil 'Scrotum humanum' #WyrdWednesday
Illustration from the 1677 'Natural History of Oxford-shire' by Robert Plot, first Keeper of the Ashmolean Museum, who systemically studied paleontology and natural history. Physician Richard Brookes had his 'A System of Natural History', 6 vols. published in 1763 and was a prolific writer and translator. In the 1990s Brookes' description was officially rejected 🎨 The 17th century b&w illustration is thought to be of a Megalosaurus femur but, for now, info remains inconclusive until new discoveries and interpretations are made.
