#OnThisDay in 382CE, the #Roman #Emperor Theodosius signed a treaty with the Visigoths which granted them lands between the Lower Danube and the Balkans. The obverse of this #gold #solidus minted in #Constantinople shows a bust of Theodosius. It dates to the period of 378-383CE. CC.1239

This digitised glass plate #negative shows 'Yenije Kalch Fort' (Yenicekale) with the remains of a stone structure on a hillside at the site of Hattusa near Boghaz Keui (Boğazkale, #Turkey). The original #photo was taken in 1907 during Garstang’s #survey of #Anatolia. JG/HIT/BOK/35

#ObjectoftheDay, is this stone #scarab which has an image of a #baboon on the back. The other side depicts a number of different #animals, including a #fish and a #gazelle, as well as a wadjet-eye. This scarab comes from the ancient Sudanese #settlement of #Meroë. E.1035

This digitised glass plate #negative shows the reverse of an ancient Egyptian #stela and it depicts a relief of a figure with a #hieroglyphic inscription. This #artefact was #excavated in 1901-1902 by Garstang at site D1 at Bêt Dawd. JG/R/2/150a

#ObjectoftheDay is this #Mycenaean Linear B clay tablet. Linear B was used for writing Mycenaean Greek, the earliest attested form of #Greek. This type of script was found mainly in the #palace archives at #Knossos & Khaniá in Crete, & Mycenae, Pylos, Thebes, & Tiryns in Greece. C.591

#OnThisDay in 63 BCE the future Roman emperor Augustus was born . In 27 BCE, he was awarded the title of ‘Augustus’ and was proclaimed ‘Princeps Senatus’ the ‘First Man’ in the Roman senate. This silver denarius shows the laureate head of Augustus on its obverse.

#OnThisDay in 31 BCE the Battle of Actium took place between the fleet of #Octavian (led by Marcus Agrippa) & the fleets of Mark Antony and #Cleopatra VII. The obverse of this silver #coin dated to 29-27 BCE, it depicts the bare head of Octavian, soon to be known as Augustus. CC.389

Happy #NationalDogDay! This Ptolemaic Period coffin panel shows two jackals, Anubis and Wepwawet, they ensured safe passage of the deceased & looked after them into the afterlife. Separated from these jackals by over 2000 years is Seven one of our volunteer’s trainee service dog. E.590

Today’s digitised glass plate #negative shows a reconstructed bowl of thin pottery with a flat base of pale yellow colour. Decorated with a repeated #lotus pattern in black line with #petals coloured in #blue & #red. It was #excavated at the ancient Sudanese site of #Meroë in 1910. JG/M/NA/38

It’s #MuseumMonday and we’re sharing this picture of two of our #volunteers untangling a string of #ancientEgyptian beads! The string used here is not an original one, as that would have decayed with time. This current string was added after the beads were excavated.

#SundayRead, with a section of the ‘Book of the Dead’ painted in cursive #hieroglyphs on papyrus. It belonged to Bakenkhons, a #priest of #Amun during the New Kingdom & contains two spells intended to aid his #journey to the #afterlife. E.506.2

#ObjectoftheDay is this moulded terracotta figurine of the #goddess #Nike. This figurine probably comes from Apulia, #Italy and dates to 2nd century BCE. Nike was the Greek goddess of #victory in war, arts and athletics. She was an attribute of another deity, #Athena, the goddess of wisdom. C.530

#ObjectoftheDay is this ancient Cypriot white slip tankard type vessel. Thin clay was applied on the grey body of the vessel (referred to as white slip) to provide a background for various patterns in black and brown colours. This type of tankard was most likely used for wine drinking. C.237

It's #WorldTurtleDay & we're sharing this ancient Greek silver coin decorated with a sea turtle. This issue originated in Aegina, likely in the 5th century BCE, when Aegina was a rival of Athens. The turtle may have been a symbol of naval power, as turtles are commonly seen in the Aegean Sea. CC.77

This image is from the 1900-1901 excavations of El Mahasna & it shows gold pendants from some of the tombs. The top two rows contain 7 pendants dicovered in tomb M87, the central rows contain 5 pendants discovered in tomb M360 & the bottom rows contain 5 pendants discovered in tomb M435.

#OnThisDay in 392 CE, the Roman emperor Valentinian II died at the age of only twenty-one, either by suicide or possibly murder. This copper alloy coin was minted between 378 & 383 CE & the obverse shows a bust of the emperor wearing a diadem. CC.1237
