Book Quote Wednesday's word is 'treat' #BookQW #BookSky If you've been thinking about getting yourself a little morale boost with this ebook bargain, today's the last day to do it. Price-matched on other platforms as well as here on UK Kindle. www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/...
Cover art by Ben Baldwin shows a creature crouching in a low tunnel entrance lined with grey stones and partly hidden by green undergrowth and white flowers. The creature has pale skin covered in sparse black hair and it looks a bit like an ape, a bit like a bear, and completely unlike either of those.

Book extract reads: I put down the tin and put the kettle on to boil. Then I washed my hands. The formula tin emphasised the importance of keeping things clean. Taking the bottle out of the packaging, I fitted it together. The packaging said I should sterilise it before using it for the first time, but I didn’t have time if I was going to shut the screaming changeling up with a feed.
I didn’t only want some silence. I knew the changeling wasn’t a real baby, but on the way here, I had decided I’d better treat it like one. When whoever was behind this wanted their creature back, I needed it to be healthy. Especially if I had to trade the thing for Fin, or for whatever I needed to know to get her back from wherever she was stuck. That was my priority now Alice was safe with her parents. I’d just have to hope this little monster was as resistant to germs as I am, generally speaking.

Book Quote Wednesday's word is 'treat' #BookQW #BookSky They say, if you want to really know someone, watch how they behave towards people who they think don't matter. The Riven Kingdom will be published on 27th October 2026. www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0GK5RVZWT/
The Riven Kingdom cover art by Alice Claire Coleman is in the style of a stained glass window. Blue-green leaves and vines dotted with golden flowers coil around silver swords in panels on either side. These are topped with a golden sun on the left and a yellow crescent moon on the right. In the centre, rival hands stretch upwards trying to get hold of a crown that's just out of reach...

Book extract reads: The woman brandished a letter in the light of the oil lamp hanging over the door. ‘The boy wasn’t injured. The lightning strike didn’t touch him. Now the shock has faded, he may recall further details of that day. I insist on asking him myself.’
‘You may consult his account of that day held by the high shrine’s infirmarians. They wrote down the recollections of everyone they treated who witnessed the tragedy.’ Brother Haber tucked his hands inside the sleeves of his thick black robe. ‘I can vouch for the boy’s honesty.’
No one could argue with that. The Moon God granted his priests the power to hear falsehoods. Everyone saw such magic at work when the nobility held assizes to punish criminals within their fiefdoms, where the justiciars delivered their verdicts in the crown’s name. A priest was always on hand to unmask anyone telling lies. Just as a pale-robed priestess used the power the Goddess granted her to endorse truth.
‘Your obstruction is unacceptable.’ The woman took a half-step sideways.
Startled, Reske thought she was going to force her way past the priest.

The cover of A Waltz of Sinister Import, by Stephanie Burgis, shows a pair of late nineteenth-century dancing slippers hanging over the title and a bat with outstretched wings underneath the author's name. Framing the cover's text are branches with golden leaves. Above, beside, and below that cover image is this snippet of text: For the sake of her husband’s nerves, she had requested a maid to accompany her for the first part of this journey. For the sake of her own guilt, though, as the girl followed her obediently through the narrow streets, Margaret promised herself to make a stop later at one of the frilly-curtained konditoreis whose café windows—full of luscious-looking cakes on tempting display—the maid’s wistful gaze landed upon again and again. The poor child really would certainly deserve a treat for her patience.
Baffling though it was, Margaret had come to understand that a disheartening percentage of people in the world did not share her love for spending hours in a stationery shop packed with treasures.

Today's Book Quote Wednesday and the #BookQW word is 'treat'. In Waterborne Exile the freemerchant Marten's plans - years in the making - are unravelling.
Extract from Waterborne Exile by Susan Murray:

“Marten, the sight raises more questions than it ever answers. I’ve seen you as a great man. You had everything in place before Tresilian betrayed us all. And you can again. You will. But you must stay true to your people.”

“What, the people who made me a laughing-stock today?”

“They are still your people. You risked everything for them once.”

“Never again.” Marten stood up slowly, his eyes on Alwenna. “I’ll see you set back on your throne as queen of all the Peninsular Kingdoms before I’ll treat with them.” He pushed away from the table and the wine in the bottle was stirred by his movement, ripples spreading across the dark surface. Alwenna’s attention was drawn into the darkness beneath the perturbed surface and she could no more resist her sight than she could convince Marten of what he must do.

She dived down and down, deeper into darkness, moving through the liquid as if it were nothing more than a breeze. Her hair trailed loose behind her, free and unfettered and her heart pumped blood through her veins with a wicked glee. It was so good to be alive, so good. And revenge would be even better. Ahead of her lay a small cairn. As she drew closer she could see it was composed not of rocks as she had assumed, but of bones. Reposing on the very top of the cairn lay the jewelled dagger.

#BookQW – treat

Book Quote Wednesday's word is 'treat' #BookQW Sedna is disturbed from her rest by an unwanted challenge to duel in otherwise idyllic surroundings. The Murderer's Lament is available now! Links to store pages below. #scifi #spaceopera #mystery #scifibooks #BookSky💙📚
Official Hyatta’s lips drew back from his teeth, his breath hissing. “So be it. Then, Qutro, I demand of you a duel.”
In front of everyone present, Hyatta drew one of the small feather pins from the gossamer scarf around his head and threw it at Sedna’s feet. She picked it up, looking at the exotic feature as Hyatta awaited her reply.
“You are sure you want this?”
“Yes.”
“And how would you have it?”
“To the death. No other will satisfy me.”
“As you wish.”
There was a momentary silence, then the gentle hum of talk as the newcomer barged out to prepare for the duel. Sedna looked at the item thrown at her. Could’ve used something better. The feather had been dyed, and it was so sad and droopy from the heat and a lack of care. Oh, well. A challenge was a challenge.
One of the oldest servants was speaking within earshot to another guest. “Last time there was a challenge here was when a Human guest insulted the planet’s last Feles ambassador, and they ended up in a fistfight.”
“What happened?”
“The Human was taken away with severe lacerations, the ambassador was treated for internal injuries, and the two have been political allies ever since.”
Sedna laughed at this overheard trifle. “Hmm. Seems the old adage about getting friends and allies holds true.”
“What adage?” asked Dudruk.
“First step, engage in mortal combat.”
“That’s not an adage.”
“Well, then it’s a trope. Personally, if I ever engaged an employer in mortal combat, I’d have no employers.”
The joke fell somewhat flat given the circumstances. Indeed, from what her ears caught as she passed back inside, news of the duel subdued even the most ardent and flippant conversationalists.

Book Quote Wednesday & the word is TREAT. In Cursed Under London, Lazare knows only too well that he is the biggest treat of all. He just needs Fang to understand that and stop MOPING, who mopes about KISSING?? #BookSky #BookQW Buying links: farragobooks.com/book-series/...
Quote from Cursed Under London. Quote reads: ‘Just take what you came here for,’ he whispered, and leaned his mouth into Lazare’s just that whisper he needed for their lips to touch, ‘you only really want one thing. Stop trying to fool yourself that this is anything but – you’re not fooling me.’
Lazare pulled away, angrily.
Fang’s eyes still danced with desperation, pain and now humiliation and rage. ‘Again?’ He seethed.
‘I could ask the same of you,’ whispered Lazare. ‘Didn’t you say less than ten minutes ago you weren’t going to try it on again?’
Fang rolled onto his back, angrily. ‘What was wrong with it this time? I’m sober! You can’t tell yourself you’re just being gentlemanly around a drunk.’
‘I keep saying, I won’t sleep with you if you’re sad about it. Sleeping with me is a treat, and you should be duly delighted. You deserve a treat, Fang of Cathay.’

The Book Quote word this week is 'treat' #BookQW #BookSky and in a gothic mansion in the Black Forest, Diago is entertained by the Grier brothers over a poisoned meal:
A cream background with dark red Art Deco designs in the four corners and a screen shot of the cover of Where Oblivion Lives a dark red color with a yellow abstract angel on the cover. The text of the excerpt reads: Karl leaned forward. “You must understand that my pursuit of archaeological details about the house has led me to other ancient texts. For example, those symbols”—he pointed to the band of Diago’s ring—“are used by nefilim to work their spells of intent.”

“Spells?” Diago choked on the word. He couldn’t be seen taking this kind of talk seriously. And I have to do it without insulting him. He treated the mortal to an incredulous smile and raised his eyebrows. “By nefilim? I thought they were biblical giants, not witches.”

“That is what they have led the mortals to believe. You see, the nefilim controlled the narrative by writing mortal histories. They inserted falsehoods into the myths of ancient beings to disguise their presence among the mortals. Nefilim are actually hybrids, who are the children of angels and mortals.”

Karl was dangerously close to the truth.

Book Quote Wednesday's word is 'knew' #BookQW #BookSky Dan Mackmain knows the value of doing his homework. But how much reading will be enough to avoid the trap of thinking he knows more than he does? For a wide range of UK and international purchase options - wizardstowerpress.com/books-2/book...
Cover art by Ben Baldwin for The Green Man's Debt by Juliet E McKenna. A grey wolf with pale eyes stands in the shadows of a derelict building with a black and white tiled floor. The wolf is looking straight at you. Its snarl reveals blood on its teeth and jaw.
Book extract reads: Blithehurst House has a fine collection of books on folklore. They range from seventeenth-century antiquarians’ speculations to thick volumes written by earnest Victorians and Edwardians who had enough money and time to search for supposedly lost ancient wisdom hidden in fairy tales. I concentrated on those, rather than reading anything later which started with the assumption that none of the stories could be true. We knew better.
I ignored the frankly bonkers chapters where those books tried to trace every tale and mythical figure back to some grand unified theory of forgotten gods from Mesopotamia whose rites had spread through prehistoric Europe. I was interested in local myths and superstitions which might help me deal with whatever we met in Ireland. Thankfully, the folklorists had written down pretty much everything they were told by ordinary people at their firesides or over a pint of beer in a tavern. Even when I was certain the locals in the countryside had been taking the piss out of the posh and patronising townies.

Book Quote Wednesday's word is 'knew' #BookQW #BookSky Dan Mackmain has no idea what made the noise he's just heard. Book extract reads: As well as a folder of information about the cottage for visitors, I saw a shallow wicker basket filled with leaflets. Fin started sorting through them.
‘There’s a lot of ancient stuff around here. A couple of hillforts. A Roman villa. This one has a couple of circular walks we could do, if we fancied looking at standing stones.’
She tossed leaflets for Wookey Hole and the Cheddar caves back in the basket. She knew I wouldn’t be interested in those. I’m too tall to be comfortable in dark, cramped spaces underground.
‘Right.’ I closed my eyes and wondered why it’s so hard to find furniture with a back tall enough for someone like me. I shifted sideways and slid down the cushions until I could rest my head properly. That made drinking my tea awkward, but I felt my headache easing.
I listened to the soft rustle of paper and Fin making faint noises of surprise and approval as she found something interesting. Then I heard something else. I opened my eyes.
Fin was staring at me, concerned. ‘Was that a cat?’

The Book Quote Wednesday word is KNEW. At the start of Cursed Under London, there's a lot that Lazare doesn't know, but one thing he DOES know is, he's definitely not a vampire, even though everyone thinks he is, and he just got fired for it. #BookSky #BookQW buy: farragobooks.com/book-series/...
Quote from Cursed Under London. Quote reads: ‘I’m not a vampire, Madame,’ Lazare replied, ensuring she could see his normal human teeth through his renewed smile.
‘Or whatever it is that you actually are,’ continued Lady Alice, smoothly, and Lazare had no answer to that. He knew that the one thing he very definitely was, was fired.
Lazare wasn’t a vampire. That much, he knew. To become a vampire, one must be turned by another vampire. It hadn’t been a vampire attack that had started Lazare’s recent troubles, but humdrum, run of the mill human muggers, with boring old cudgels and knives. Vampire attacks were actually very rare in Upper London, in spite of all the lurid rumours and whispers about their kind, and it was even rarer for a vampire to revive a dying human by turning them without their consent. No, none of this was a vampire’s doing. In fact, the only vampires that ever bothered Lazare even now were…
‘Sir? Good Sir? Excuse me?’
Lazare sighed inwardly, and painted his smile on for the approaching vampire.
‘I couldn’t help but notice that you appear to be afflicted, Sir.’

It's Book Quote Wednesday and the word is KNOW This is from NOMARA, one of my science fiction novels. Action. Adventure. A loose tie to the Triempery novels. I've been putting snips up on another site but now I have cool art to share! Art by Mara, @hajima7.bsky.social #bookqw #WritingCommunity
Left side of image is an illustration by Mara of two characters from the novel NOMARA. Novel by L.L. Stephens. Illustration shows a proud red clothed nomari queen in the background and a defiant, stubborn dark haired Terran woman in the foreground.

Right side has a text excerpt from NOMARA, a science fiction novel by L.L. Stephens:

“Do you know what you stand upon, Terran?” Oandah asked. As she stepped into the light, her face drew the glow. “Knowledge is gained more often by loss than acquisition. I spent seven years among your kind; I walked a hundred soaring cities and spinning metal wheels, I have seen a hundred suns, some natural, some made by Terrans, all real, and never once did I set foot upon true earth. Just spinning satellites in space, and cities rising from dead stones without air, and big ships such as that one up there, that brought you here.”
Reflexively, Kate looked up. Clouds obscured the stars, cut her off from the familiar sights of space, as if she stood beneath, rather than upon, the surface of the planet. Layers of density, she reminded herself. She stood at the bottom of a gas sea.

Book Quote Wednesday's word is 'knew' #BookQW Sedna explains her reasoning behind what on the surface looks like a cold-blooded killing. Will her philosophy continue to stand up to scrutiny? #scifi #spaceopera #mystery #BookSky💙📚
Hyatta’s second came over and checked him, then rose and bowed to Sedna. “You are the victor. The vendetta is settled.”
Sedna bowed in turn, handed her weapon back to the chairman, then quickly walked to the desk to put through a call to cancel her flight to Qaata. Ajax watched her walk away from Official Hyatta’s body, then turned away from the scene with a disgusted expression. In the hall, as Sedna was about to make her call, he popped into her peripheral vision. She faced him head on as he opened with a disdainful remark.
“Pleased with yourself?”
“Yes.” Sedna put on a smile to hide her irritation. “Rather. All sorted out quite quickly. No need to cut my holiday short this time.”
“It was cold-blooded murder.”
“That’s what I do. I’m a Murderer.”
“That is not what I mean. There are Murderers if you insist, and there are also killers. You knew he would miss, did you not? How did you know?”
Sedna gave Ajax a strange expression. “I gave him his chance. Can you say fairer than that? If I hadn’t, it wouldn’t have been in the least fair. And by prolonging it, he would have done himself irreparable personal damage.”
“Fair? What are you talking about?”
“He has . . . Apologies, I must correct myself, wrong tense. He had problems with his depth perception. I’m amazed he crossed the garden and back without running into any of the plants or chairs. I let him take the first shot, but it was a matter of honor. If I’d missed deliberately, he would have insisted on as many rematches as it took, and the whole thing would have dragged on so. Eventually, he would have had to own up and be made to look an utter fool. Better to end it quickly and preserve his sense of honor.”
“What honor is there in cold-blooded killing?”
“Depends on the point of view. Better a cool and disinterested murder that saves lives and reputation than a hot action leading to reprisals and ruination. You deal with the latter type every day, don’t you?”

As he sank into his seat with rather less than his usual grace, Lord Riven knocked back a hasty sip of his glass of blood—and then winced.
“Not quite so fresh as promised?” Margaret inquired.
Strain tightened his expression as he closed his eyes against her. “It...is as fresh as could be hoped when served in this way. It only suffers by comparison.”
...Comparison to her, he meant. The warmth in Margaret’s stomach gave an answering throb at that, and she ran her tongue over her upper lip. Having published an internationally renowned article on the physical effects of a lover’s vampiric bite, she knew exactly how marvelous that would feel.
Their curtains were so very tightly closed...

It's book quote Wednesday #BookQW and today's word is knew. Meet George from Her Borrowed Grave, before he changed his name to George to escape his family. Find the character short story, Our Ancestors' Gifts here. www.vanessajknipe.com/post/our-anc...
A flyer for Her Borrowed Grave. It shows a copy of a news paper with headline of Man's best friend and five found dead on Walmgate stray.
Text reads: “Arthur!” Papa stood waiting with his brother Uncle George. “What’s Arthur doing here? It should be Oliver.”
Arthur shrank away. Of course it should be his big brother Oliver. At eleven, he was starting at the boarding school too, but he would enter the big school, not the prep part where Arthur was enrolled.
Uncle George crouched to bring his head level with Arthur’s. “Why are you here?”
“Someone called me,” Arthur whispered, staring over his uncle’s shoulder at where Papa smouldered. “And woke me. I knew I had to bring the spear to the giant.”

I haven't done a #BookQW in a while, but with the release of The Teacup Dragon Sanctuary, here's a glimpse of how Portia and Noah first meet. Hint: it doesn't go well. The BookQW word this week is knew/know. The Teacup Dragon Sanctuary is out now from only 99p. mybook.to/TeacupDragon...
Quote from The Teacup Dragon Sanctuary on a dark blue background with the cover in the right hand bottom corner. Text reads: This Week's #BookQW is KNEW.

'Who says I'm a new owner?' Portia snapped, thoroughly fed up with his presumption.

His smile came back, just on the edge of mocking, and his eyes sparkled with amusement at her annoyance. 'Are you not? You said it was a new situation. How long have you had her?'

Unable to answer, Portia bit her lower lip. For Wenn's sake, she knew all about teacup dragons. It was unavoidable given her upbringing. Jade was just... challenging. That was all. They were just getting to know each other. She'll be far more wary in future.

Unfortunately, Turner read her silence as something else. 'Yes, I thought as much. Learn quickly, young lady.'

It's Book Quote Wednesday, what with it being a Wednesday and all that, so let's have a quote from my second Mennik Thorn book, Nectar for the God. The word this week is "knew", and we're right near the start of the book here. #BookQW books2read.com/NectarGod
Promo image showing the cover of Nectar for the God by Patrick Samphire, with text that reads: The City Watch, who always liked a good murder to cheer up an otherwise boring day, were soon on the scene. There they put into play the full range of procedures and techniques they were renowned for – mainly gawping at the body and asking some desultory questions – before concluding that neither Cord nor Mirian knew each other, and Cord had just been in the wrong place at the wrong time.

It's Book Quote Wednesday and the word is KNEW/KNOW Here's an excerpt from The Siege of Druine, which fills in some important backstory about the characters in The Many Shades of Midnight - it's also free to download on my newsletter. #bookqw #writingcommunity #indiefantasy 💙🪐📚
Front cover and excerpt from The Siege of Druine for Book Quote Wednesday prompt KNEW/KNOW

“I knew your father. Did you know that?”
There was a knife in those words. Storn saw it in the way Alyas froze, colour leaving his face.
Haki tilted his head, taking in the reaction the other man was too tired to hide, and he thrust that knife deeper. “I was there when he won from the emperor the right to claim any reward he could name. He named the Ado blades.”
It was only because Storn was watching so closely that he caught the tiny twitch at those words. Haki was watching just as intently. He laughed. “Oh yes, your father asked for them. He never told you that, did he? We all expected the emperor to strike him down for his presumption. Those blades were the greatest prize in all of Qido. But do you know what he did? He begged your father to choose something else, anything else. He shamed us all that day, begging a foreigner, and he did it not to preserve a national heirloom, but because he said the blades were cursed.”

It's Book Quote Wednesday and today's #BookQW word is 'know'. Far too many options so I've gone with 'known'. In Waterborne Exile Brett's freemerchant father is returning home after a long absence, but he's not alone.
Extract from Waterborne Exile by Susan Murray:

Brett moved his attention to the woman who rode behind his father, eyeing her with curiosity. She had fair skin, ill-suited to the desert heat. There was something ethereal about her, something he couldn’t quite name, some sense of – what, he wasn’t sure. As if aware of his scrutiny she looked up and her eyes met his. Brett caught his breath. For a moment it was as if she could read his innermost thoughts. But that was silly. No one could do such a thing. There was a slight twist of her mouth that might have been a smile then she nodded and he found he could turn his eyes away at last, aware of a sudden sense of great grief. Such a sorrow as he’d never known before. He felt strangely guilty, as if he’d intruded somehow.

He fell in behind their horses as they picked their way up the valley. This was something important here, something momentous.

#BookQW – know(n)

It's Book Quote Wednesday, is it? I didn't know this was a thing but want to share as well! This week, 'knew.' #BookQW books.bookfunnel.com/TippingWorld...
Cover of a book in shades of muted teal depicting a person with a sword in a heavy robe walking through a garden dead for the season. You can't see their face because of a cowl, but they're looking over their shoulder as if uneasy.
Block of text reads:
She leaned forward, gaze challenging. “Very well. Why am I Lahar, Haimar Miran?”
Another question whose answer she knew. But there was more to it than she would have considered. How could she, not understanding Quensei the way he did, not knowing her opponents would reappear on her doorstep as soon as it suited them?
“I gather you already wonder whether you may be made a scapegoat.”
Her eyes flickered.
“Has it never struck you that you’re also a marvelous precedent?”
This got a blank look that appeared to be genuine.
“Who proposed you for the position? Who, in the first event, unexpectedly shifted to your camp when so much power seemed poised to tip in your favor?”
“You?” she pointed out coldly. “You may not have suggested this, but you agreed to it readily.”
“This is an era of scapegoats. I have no desire to be the first to be imprisoned and tortured for lack of loyalty. It has already been proposed a number of times. I may occasionally get away with voicing a thought at your councils, but to vote against the majority? I might as well slit my own throat, which would be quicker and less painful than the methods the Kanleacht or your dear friend Liona would employ to show me the error of my ways.
“And unexpected?” he added. “Surely you jest, Lahar. You asked this of me. Will you insult me now by pretending you had no idea how it would go?”
From The King of Ill-Omens, book three of the COMPLETE epic The Tipping World.

Cover art by Ben Baldwin shows a creature crouching in a low tunnel entrance lined with grey stones and partly hidden by green undergrowth and white flowers. The creature has pale skin covered in sparse black hair and it looks a bit like an ape, a bit like a bear, and completely unlike either of those.

book extract reads: ‘That makes sense,’ Fin agreed. ‘But how do we know we’re not adding two and two to make nine?’
‘Give me a minute.’ I stood up and passed Not-Alice to her, careful not to knock the tall coffee glasses over. I walked to the far end of the beer garden. A notice in the bar said the apples from this small orchard were sent to the local cider maker. I wondered if that meant the factory we had seen driving through Shepton Mallet or a smaller operation. Regardless, whoever looked after these trees had done a good job thinning this year’s fruit.
I rested my palm lightly on the closest branch, speaking quietly. ‘I could really use your help.’
The tree let me know it was willing to cooperate. It felt sharper somehow, wary and more aloof than the ones in the cottage garden. Imagine the difference between a placid riding school pony and one used to roaming moorland.
Regardless, the cider apple tree showed me what I needed to know.

Book Quote Wednesday's word is 'tree' #BookQW #BookSky The Hunter's antlers may remind Dan Mackmain of branches, but nothing else about this dream is remotely familiar. Visit Wizard's Tower Press for a wide range of national and international purchase options. wizardstowerpress.com/books-2/book...

Book extract reads: The Hunter stopped walking. The birds fell silent. A long-eared owl soared up from a cluster of silver birch saplings and headed for the horizon. A massive animal reared up from a hollow that had been hidden by the little trees and the swathes of bright green, arrowhead-shaped leaves hanging from their twisted branches.
It was some sort of deer, and it was sodding enormous. As far as I could tell at this distance, that hump rising above its shoulder blades was roughly the same height as my head. The beast must need those muscles and its thick neck to counterbalance its antlers. They had to be more than three metres across. Where the Hunter’s branched tree-like and narrowed to points, the huge deer’s were broad and flat, fringed with lethal-looking spikes. Like a fallow deer’s, if you could scale a fallow buck up to more than twice its natural height and eight times the bulk.

It's Book Quote Wednesday & the word is TREE. In the Cursed series, Fang's one fond memory of home is of time spent with someone under a peach tree there. Maybe if he can die, he can see it again. #BookSky #BookQW buying links farragobooks.com/book-series/...
Quote from Cursed Under London. Quote reads: Fang didn’t even think. His hands were already on Randall’s shoulder, his foot already on the ruffian’s thigh, he pushed himself up and vaulted over both Randall and Lazare’s shoulders, one leg curling back as he dropped down the other side of the two men to kick the stake out of Thomasina’s hands before landing.
He lashed out a foot. It hit nothing but thin air. He’d mistimed the kick.
Thomasina was still lunging, her eyes widened in alarm at the man who had just dropped down between her and her intended target.
Fang tried to make a last-ditch grab for the stake.
But it was too late.
There was a terrible, meaty sound of sharp wood entering flesh, and Thomasina’s face was right next to his, etched with shock.
‘Sorry,’ she mumbled. ‘That wasn’t meant for you.’
Everything was going dark, again.
Maybe, maybe this time he would die. Maybe someone was waiting for him. Underneath that peach tree, that big peach tree back home.

Book Quote Wednesday's word is 'tree'. #BookQW In an exotic domed garden, Sedna walks among potential allies and enemies as the scene is set for murder. The Murderer's Lament is out on September 29! #scifi #spaceopera #mystery #sample #writingcommunity #BookSky💙📚
Sedna scanned the area before her. It looked stunning. On either side of the open grassy meadow was a rockery, packed with healthy exotic specimens. An artificial waterfall trickled at its far end, where a number of wetland plants were arranged. Under the line of trees were plants that needed more shade, though still firmly within the realms of the tropics. Many plants were in flower, some were on the cusp, some were past their best, and many simply showed off their leaves of a dozen shades in natural glory.
Sedna described the scene, then added, “Is there anywhere for cooler plants to grow, or is it all tropical?”
“Ah.” Sienyd smiled. “I see my environment is a little stifling for your taste.”
“A little.”
Jaques spoke from near the edge of one of the rockeries. “Don’t Ekri like the heat? You come from an arid world, don’t you?”
Sedna chose her words carefully, more than this Human seemed to. “To a degree. But there are limits. Too much heat, or heat with too much moisture, is a great risk for our kind. Some piece of our ancestors may have been cold blooded, but we are not. Nor do we like saturation”
“I see.” Jaques cocked his head contemplatively. “Don’t take offense, but on Ancient Earth, there was a type of creature very like you in appearance. We called them reptiles. In fact, each of the different peoples seem to parallel something from our records of Ancient Earth’s fauna. Quite uncanny.”
Pashai entered into the spirit of the talk. “What do our people parallel?”
The conversation turned on comparative physiognomy. The Feles, compared to “big cats,” with their Human name taken from felidae. The unflattering Kavki parallel to “fish,” “amphibians,” and other marine or aquatic creatures. Pashai’s face appeared taut, but Sienyd didn’t seem offended.

It's Book Quote Wednesday! This week's prompt is "tree," so - with just 4 weeks until publication day! - here's a snippet from my upcoming novella A Waltz of Sinister Import, which you can preorder now: books2read.com/waltzSinister #romance #fantasy #bookqw #
The cover of A Waltz of Sinister Import, by Stephanie Burgis, shows a pair of late nineteenth-century dancing slippers hanging over the title and a bat with outstretched wings underneath the author's name. Framing the cover's text are branches with golden leaves. Above, beside, and below that cover image is this snippet of text: The orchestra struck up a new waltz—and Margaret’s whole body thrummed with the power of its first chord. The greater din of the room faded away; only vaguely, somewhere in the back of her brain, did she note that every other guest had fallen silent around her.
That music...!
It was a powerful river current, sweeping her up without conscious thought. Even as it locked her in place with sheer wonder, dark forests and rippling streams took shape all around her. At first, she thought they were mere fantasies hinted at by the music, but then—there! Just before her: giant, twisting, black oak trees rose within the ballroom of the Hofburg where other guests had congregated only an instant ago. More and more trees appeared until they filled the room with their unnaturally dark, spreading branches, ebony draped with glinting gold and silver leaves.
The rich, distinctive scent of a forest floor rose through her senses.

It's book quote Wednesday, which means it's time for a quote, this week from The Dinosaur Hunters, my murder mystery set on Regency Mars. The word this week is "tree". #bookQW books2read.com/dinosaurhunt...
The Martian wilderness was thick and dense. Tall, twisted trees spiked up through the undergrowth, trailing slowly writhing creepers from their branches. Beneath the canopy, pressed in by the heavy undergrowth, the air was sweltering. Within ten minutes, Harriet was soaked through. Sweat dripped from her forehead into her eyes. She dashed it away with a wet sleeve.

It's Book Quote Wednesday and the word is TREE. Amallar has trees, many trees. Lots of paragraphs and settings involve trees. Also autumn makes a good time for talk about big changes, as Hans and Dorilian set out to do in this scene from THE GOD SPEAR. #bookqw #WritingCommunity
Left side of image is the book cover of THE GOD SPEAR, book 4 of the Triempery Revelations series by L.L. Stephens. Cover is orange, gold, and red and shows a young woman walking along a country lane toward a distant, strangely shaped hill crowned by antlers.

Right side of image is a text excerpt from THE GOD SPEAR, in which two characters, Hans and Dorilian, begin to discuss a highly improbable and powerful gift.

“The Khelds aren’t going to believe that you want to bargain in good faith just because I say so. They’ll toss me out of the Witan if I come to them with no more than that!”
Dorilian eyed him icily. “If you wanted more than that, you should have stayed in Sordan.”
“But I didn’t. And you know what? I’m glad I didn’t. Because now I know where I stand with my people, not yours. I don’t cling to any nice little dreams that Amallar or the Khelds are going to blindly follow me wherever I lead them. I know that I have to bring them more than what they’ve already got.”
Dorilian leaned his weight upon the bole of the tree. It was a posture so natural to him that Hans could almost take seriously his pretense of contemplation. “And what do these Khelds not have that you would give them?”
     “The Rill.”
