I am waiting so hard for two movies that won't be out for another couple of months: La Bola Negra and Werwulf. Everything in between is content-candy (and that's not a put-down, because candy is great), but La Bola Negra and Werwulf will be like gourmet meals and I am so hungry.

The Book Quote word this week is 'treat' #BookQW #BookSky and in a gothic mansion in the Black Forest, Diago is entertained by the Grier brothers over a poisoned meal:
A cream background with dark red Art Deco designs in the four corners and a screen shot of the cover of Where Oblivion Lives a dark red color with a yellow abstract angel on the cover. The text of the excerpt reads: Karl leaned forward. “You must understand that my pursuit of archaeological details about the house has led me to other ancient texts. For example, those symbols”—he pointed to the band of Diago’s ring—“are used by nefilim to work their spells of intent.”

“Spells?” Diago choked on the word. He couldn’t be seen taking this kind of talk seriously. And I have to do it without insulting him. He treated the mortal to an incredulous smile and raised his eyebrows. “By nefilim? I thought they were biblical giants, not witches.”

“That is what they have led the mortals to believe. You see, the nefilim controlled the narrative by writing mortal histories. They inserted falsehoods into the myths of ancient beings to disguise their presence among the mortals. Nefilim are actually hybrids, who are the children of angels and mortals.”

Karl was dangerously close to the truth.

I've never felt a closer affinity to a dog as when at the vet today, a lady walked in with a pug that instantly began snarling and barking at the 3 children (2 of whom should have been in school) and didn't settle down until they left. Fistbump, little dog, fistbump.

Seeing positive reviews and ratings for The Green Man's Debt from keen and speedy readers is very gratifying. Don't forget this month's 99p ebook offer for The Green Man's Holiday, on Kindle and price-matched elsewhere if you need to read that first. You could even buy both titles for £5.98... 😁
Cover art by Ben Baldwin shows a creature crouching in a low tunnel entrance lined with grey stones and partly hidden by green undergrowth and white flowers. The creature has pale skin covered in sparse black hair and it looks a bit like an ape, a bit like a bear, and completely unlike either of those.

Cover copy reads: When your mother’s a dryad and you’re an only child, you don’t have much experience of big family events. But Daniel Mackmain’s girlfriend, Finele, has a whole load of relatives. They’re all coming to her sister Iris’s wedding. Frankly, Dan’s dreading it. At least plenty of other guests will have connections to the supernatural. The bride and groom can turn into swans, for a start.
Since Dan’s still a loner at heart, he and Fin have planned a few days away together afterwards. Just the two of them in a quiet country cottage should be nice and relaxing. Dan should have remembered what folk wisdom says about making plans.

Modern fantasy rooted in British myths and folklore

There's a couple of places in Los Nefilim where Diago makes a statement regarding "if" in regards to belief in a god of some sort. The nefilim see their world in terms of power and courts and the angelic courts are jingoistic, not spiritual.

Quick bit of advice for traditionally published authors: Keep an eye on your sales and the contractual terms of the publisher. Once sales fall below the contracted rate, it might be in your best interests to request a rights reversion and then indie republish your backlist.

GDT's reddit AMA spitting fire www.reddit.com/r/movies/com...
reddit comment:

Hello! Did you intend the ending of Pan’s labyrinth to be real or in Ofelia’s mind?

Guillermo Del Toro's reply:

My interpretation, and it's exclusively mine, is that it's real.

Because there's two things. One is what people call “The Shining Question.” The Shining Question is, Who opens the door for Jack to get out of the fridge? And Ofelia is in an attic with a guard outside her door, and she draws the door with the magic chalk, and she shows up in the labyrinth. So, the only way she could have gone into the labyrinth is the magic chalk. And the flower is real at the end. The flower that blooms in the dead tree. And the reason I think it’s real is because—and this is why I'm in favor of the human factor in art—I think that art does transform the world. You know?

Think about it for a second. One of the goals, with all this movement, is to make you believe that art is vulgar. That art is nothing special, and anybody can do art. That is like me telling you that I'm faster at running than Usain Bolt but I “run” in my motorcycle. Well, that's not the same. That’s not the same at all.

Art is important, and they want you to believe it isn't. It's part of the idea of control. The goal is not to have artificial intelligence. The goal is to foster natural stupidity. The goal is to foster you not looking for answers, and to trust yourself entirely to an engine. Look at the way we are dipping our toes into these things. We are starting to ask the machine, Is this true? For now, there's a correlation between reality and what the answers of the machine are. For now. But soon, we won't even investigate further. We will be told it's true. And if the machine is in the hands of somebody who should not be trusted, then your reality has been completely and utterly fucked. Because your intelligence ends at the question. You don't seek the answer. It's given to you.Q: You recently mentioned that AI creates 'semi-compelling screensavers' and that you'd 'rather die' than use it. As a filmmaker who relies heavily on practical effects and creature design, what do you think is the biggest thing lost when a computer generates an image instead of a human hand?

GDT:

The three quarters of the process that gave you the chance to think of the idea that people don't think about without that process. Meaning, AI can get you to the middle really fast, but there's a dialectic with the process that gets you to that top 10%. I'll give you an example with the Pale Man.

We sculpted it as an old man, with a face. And then I said, Let's take out the face. This happened because I saw a photo of a manta ray and the poster for Don Coscarelli’s Phantasm. That combination, which happened at two different times during a week or a month, are not permutations that are chemically part of an equation. They are alchemy. And then I said, Take out the face, and then I said, Let's put the eyes on the hands. This triangulation happens because I spent a month or two months living with the idea of this creature. And it's not linear.

AI is like a super-fast engine that makes semi-sentient permutations of things that are already done. Creation is things that have never been done. Coming to exist.

And the second thing is the loss of the apprenticeship that one has as an artist. You're never a master; you're always an apprentice. This is a kinship I have with, for example, Chris Nolan. When he showed me The Odyssey, there’s a scene when Matt Damon is floating in the stormy ocean and I asked him—because we were talking about practical effects, and how great it is and that we both always use a maquette or a model—and I asked him, How did you do it? He said, “We put him in a storm in the ocean.”

And you're gonna find that 30% of a great image occurs accidentally. You know, either a drop of water hits the lens, or the camera shakes. I remember when in 1993, '94, Jim…

Book Quote Wednesday's word is 'drip' #BookQW #BookSky Dealing with the dangers the Green Man sends him to face has punctured any notion Dan Mackmain ever had that he was invulnerable. Tomorrow you can discover the challenges the Hunter has for him in Ireland. www.amazon.co.uk/Green-Mans-D...
Cover art by Ben Baldwin for The Green Man's Debt by Juliet E McKenna. A grey wolf with pale eyes stands in the shadows of a derelict building with a black and white tiled floor. The wolf is looking straight at you. Its snarl reveals blood on its teeth and jaw.

Book Extract reads: I don’t much like hospitals these days. They didn’t bother me before I started tackling problems for the Green Man. I only went to A&E departments when a workmate had to be patched up or stitched back together and needed a lift. Health and Safety can’t stop every accident on a building site. I only picked up scrapes and bruises that didn’t need medical attention, and I kept my tetanus boosters up to date.
That changed after I’d seen my mate Aled taken away in an ambulance, after I’d dragged him out of his blazing car. I’d had to drive to the hospital where they took him, to find out if he’d survived his horrible burns. A couple of years later, I’d had to spend tedious hours sitting on a trolley in a glaringly white room, getting antibiotics and painkillers through an IV drip. A hag had got her claws into me, literally. I’m still not sure how much of what I remember about being so sick then is real and what’s hallucination. I do know that Eleanor tells me I could have died without the Blithehurst dryads’ help backed up by modern medicine. Don’t get me wrong. I’m very grateful to the doctors and nurses, but I’d rather not do any of that again.

Today's word is DRIP. Today's #BookQW from DIRECT DESCENDANT (DAW Books, Inc. 2025), a standalone contemporary fantasy (or cozy horror, depending on if you're talking to me or marketing) takeing place in Northern Ontario, land of the silver birch, home of the...not quite moose. Shop indie if you can
Lower left the cover of Direct Descendant, yellow and green and black with a bakery, a woman eating a cup cake, framing silver birch, and tentacles. Because that's the way we roll.

By the time I got back to the guest house, sweat dripped continuously off my chin and rolled in slow motion into my cleavage like a titillating shot in one of those terrible 90's fantasies resurrected by streaming services. Inside the blessed air conditioning, I slowly climbed the three stairs from the side door to the first floor, damp denim dragging against my shins. I didn't know shins could sweat. First time for everything.

Book Quote Wednesday's word is 'drip' #BookQW #BookSky If Dan Mackmain'd had the slightest idea of the challenge he'd face on this holiday, he'd have broken out in a cold sweat. Don't miss this month's Kindle 99p ebook offer, price-matched from other retailers. www.amazon.co.uk/Green-Mans-H...
Cover art by Ben Baldwin shows a creature crouching in a low tunnel entrance lined with grey stones and partly hidden by green undergrowth and white flowers. Book extract reads: As I ate, I studied the map, careful not to drip tomato sauce onto the paper. Cheddar looked to be the closest place sizeable enough to have a decent range of shops. Hopefully the town would be busy enough that no one would look twice at me buying nappies and other baby stuff. Even though the story about a newborn going missing for a couple of hours had made the TV news, strangers outside Bishop’s Warren shouldn’t have any reason to think I’d had anything to do with it.
But that was definitely a bus ride away. If I got out on the village green here, with a carrier bag loaded with baby stuff, anyone who lived in Bishop’s Warren would look at me and wonder. They’d have heard about a baby going missing. The people who lived on Pigeon Lane most likely knew Fin and I had arrived without a child. They had to know baby Alice had been left outside this cottage.

DRIP is today's #BookQW and this one comes from CARVED FROM STONE AND DREAM, where Rafael's nightmare becomes reality: Choose Bookshop dot org as your vendor so you can give to your favorite indie bookstore: awfulagent.com/ebooks/carve...
A picture of a circle of sigils encircling a skull and the title CARVED FROM STONE AND DREAM T.FROHOCK in white print on a dark green background with the text: Midair over the cavity was a single mirror, which whirled lazily. The colors of the prisoners’ song rose up and disappeared into the glass, only to return as darkness, deeper than any darkness in the mortal realm. Ichor from the mirror dripped over the boulder and sizzled across the nefilim’s upturned faces.

Rafael cringed from the smell of scorched flesh. A low moan burned at the back of his throat as he remembered his nightmare and the spinning mirror over Miquel’s head. No. Not my Miquel.

Cover copy reads: Dan Mackmain’s mum is a dryad, so he knows asking someone from the supernatural world for a favour means there’ll be a price to pay, sooner or later. He’s been waiting for the Hunter, the antler-crowned guardian of predators and prey, to call in his debt.

He wasn’t expecting this to happen when he and his girlfriend Fin were planning to visit her sister Iris and her new husband Conn. Dan has prepared for this unknown challenge, reading up on Irish folklore. So far, he’s learned how different those who live in that unseen realm will be from anyone he’s encountered before – and that crossing them could be very dangerous.

A modern fantasy rooted in ancient myths and folklore.
