It's Book Quote Wednesday! This week's word is 'knew,' and with exactly 3 weeks until A Waltz of Sinister Import arrives, here's a snippet from Lady & Lord Riven's first evening in Vienna... Preorder here: books2read.com/waltzSinister #romancelandia #bookqw
As he sank into his seat with rather less than his usual grace, Lord Riven knocked back a hasty sip of his glass of blood—and then winced.
“Not quite so fresh as promised?” Margaret inquired.
Strain tightened his expression as he closed his eyes against her. “It...is as fresh as could be hoped when served in this way. It only suffers by comparison.”
...Comparison to her, he meant. The warmth in Margaret’s stomach gave an answering throb at that, and she ran her tongue over her upper lip. Having published an internationally renowned article on the physical effects of a lover’s vampiric bite, she knew exactly how marvelous that would feel.
Their curtains were so very tightly closed...

Today's word is KNEW. Today's #BookQW from INTO THE BROKEN LANDS (@dawbooks.bsky.social 2022) a created world fantasy with six POVs, two timelines, & a long hard look at what it means to be human. Kick-ass women & witty repartee included. Available in pb, digital, and audio. Shop indie if you can.
In the upper half, against a background of tentacles, are the digital cover (tentacles and a broken tower) and the original DAW cover (a broken tower and circling crows). In the upper half, the quote.

If it was the story of the flying pig from the Captain's Chronicle and how many flying pigs could there be -Lyelee suspected None had
not told these children the ending. The pig had exploded. On the other hand, they didn't seem too upset about the loss of the sheep, so maybe she had. Lyelee made a mental note to find this Nonee and see if she knew why the pig had exploded. Neither the chronicles nor the Archives had included what was inarguably an important detail.

A flyer for Her Borrowed Grave. It shows a copy of a news paper with headline of Man's best friend and five found dead on Walmgate stray.
Text reads: “Arthur!” Papa stood waiting with his brother Uncle George. “What’s Arthur doing here? It should be Oliver.”
Arthur shrank away. Of course it should be his big brother Oliver. At eleven, he was starting at the boarding school too, but he would enter the big school, not the prep part where Arthur was enrolled.
Uncle George crouched to bring his head level with Arthur’s. “Why are you here?”
“Someone called me,” Arthur whispered, staring over his uncle’s shoulder at where Papa smouldered. “And woke me. I knew I had to bring the spear to the giant.”

I haven't done a #BookQW in a while, but with the release of The Teacup Dragon Sanctuary, here's a glimpse of how Portia and Noah first meet. Hint: it doesn't go well. The BookQW word this week is knew/know. The Teacup Dragon Sanctuary is out now from only 99p. mybook.to/TeacupDragon...
Quote from The Teacup Dragon Sanctuary on a dark blue background with the cover in the right hand bottom corner. Text reads: This Week's #BookQW is KNEW.

'Who says I'm a new owner?' Portia snapped, thoroughly fed up with his presumption.

His smile came back, just on the edge of mocking, and his eyes sparkled with amusement at her annoyance. 'Are you not? You said it was a new situation. How long have you had her?'

Unable to answer, Portia bit her lower lip. For Wenn's sake, she knew all about teacup dragons. It was unavoidable given her upbringing. Jade was just... challenging. That was all. They were just getting to know each other. She'll be far more wary in future.

Unfortunately, Turner read her silence as something else. 'Yes, I thought as much. Learn quickly, young lady.'

The Teacup Dragon Sanctuary Starling Island Book 1 Available Now.

Front cover and excerpt from The Siege of Druine for Book Quote Wednesday prompt KNEW/KNOW

“I knew your father. Did you know that?”
There was a knife in those words. Storn saw it in the way Alyas froze, colour leaving his face.
Haki tilted his head, taking in the reaction the other man was too tired to hide, and he thrust that knife deeper. “I was there when he won from the emperor the right to claim any reward he could name. He named the Ado blades.”
It was only because Storn was watching so closely that he caught the tiny twitch at those words. Haki was watching just as intently. He laughed. “Oh yes, your father asked for them. He never told you that, did he? We all expected the emperor to strike him down for his presumption. Those blades were the greatest prize in all of Qido. But do you know what he did? He begged your father to choose something else, anything else. He shamed us all that day, begging a foreigner, and he did it not to preserve a national heirloom, but because he said the blades were cursed.”

It's Book Quote Wednesday and today's #BookQW word is 'know'. Far too many options so I've gone with 'known'. In Waterborne Exile Brett's freemerchant father is returning home after a long absence, but he's not alone.
Extract from Waterborne Exile by Susan Murray:

Brett moved his attention to the woman who rode behind his father, eyeing her with curiosity. She had fair skin, ill-suited to the desert heat. There was something ethereal about her, something he couldn’t quite name, some sense of – what, he wasn’t sure. As if aware of his scrutiny she looked up and her eyes met his. Brett caught his breath. For a moment it was as if she could read his innermost thoughts. But that was silly. No one could do such a thing. There was a slight twist of her mouth that might have been a smile then she nodded and he found he could turn his eyes away at last, aware of a sudden sense of great grief. Such a sorrow as he’d never known before. He felt strangely guilty, as if he’d intruded somehow.

He fell in behind their horses as they picked their way up the valley. This was something important here, something momentous.

#BookQW – know(n)

It's Book Quote Wednesday, is it? I didn't know this was a thing but want to share as well! This week, 'knew.' #BookQW books.bookfunnel.com/TippingWorld...
Cover of a book in shades of muted teal depicting a person with a sword in a heavy robe walking through a garden dead for the season. You can't see their face because of a cowl, but they're looking over their shoulder as if uneasy.
Block of text reads:
She leaned forward, gaze challenging. “Very well. Why am I Lahar, Haimar Miran?”
Another question whose answer she knew. But there was more to it than she would have considered. How could she, not understanding Quensei the way he did, not knowing her opponents would reappear on her doorstep as soon as it suited them?
“I gather you already wonder whether you may be made a scapegoat.”
Her eyes flickered.
“Has it never struck you that you’re also a marvelous precedent?”
This got a blank look that appeared to be genuine.
“Who proposed you for the position? Who, in the first event, unexpectedly shifted to your camp when so much power seemed poised to tip in your favor?”
“You?” she pointed out coldly. “You may not have suggested this, but you agreed to it readily.”
“This is an era of scapegoats. I have no desire to be the first to be imprisoned and tortured for lack of loyalty. It has already been proposed a number of times. I may occasionally get away with voicing a thought at your councils, but to vote against the majority? I might as well slit my own throat, which would be quicker and less painful than the methods the Kanleacht or your dear friend Liona would employ to show me the error of my ways.
“And unexpected?” he added. “Surely you jest, Lahar. You asked this of me. Will you insult me now by pretending you had no idea how it would go?”
From The King of Ill-Omens, book three of the COMPLETE epic The Tipping World.

My first book quote Wednesday. This comes from the first chapter of the first book in the series. #BookQW books2read.com/u/31RKNM
A promotional post with the book cover of Arcane Detective and text from the first chapter: After the mispronounced, half-hearted chant, they would burn some unknown herbs they bought online and kill a chicken to raise a demon that would grant all their wishes. Miller knew that stopping this kind of ignorance was part of his job, too. He needed to halt the spread of Darkness regardless of the size. A drip here, a spill there, all spread out and linked until it birthed a predator or murderer and that scattered more fear and pain and Darkness. It was an unending but necessary battle, like mopping the floor of a public restroom.

Text against a seashore background: "Caroline was too mad with thirst to think of it very much for the moment, but she knew without looking, just by the feel of it, what it was. A circle twining in on itself. A stone shaping perfect mystery.

You whirl inward, Henry had said. She whirls outward.

It's Book Quote Wednesday! This week's prompt is "tree," so - with just 4 weeks until publication day! - here's a snippet from my upcoming novella A Waltz of Sinister Import, which you can preorder now: books2read.com/waltzSinister #romance #fantasy #bookqw #
The cover of A Waltz of Sinister Import, by Stephanie Burgis, shows a pair of late nineteenth-century dancing slippers hanging over the title and a bat with outstretched wings underneath the author's name. Framing the cover's text are branches with golden leaves. Above, beside, and below that cover image is this snippet of text: The orchestra struck up a new waltz—and Margaret’s whole body thrummed with the power of its first chord. The greater din of the room faded away; only vaguely, somewhere in the back of her brain, did she note that every other guest had fallen silent around her.
That music...!
It was a powerful river current, sweeping her up without conscious thought. Even as it locked her in place with sheer wonder, dark forests and rippling streams took shape all around her. At first, she thought they were mere fantasies hinted at by the music, but then—there! Just before her: giant, twisting, black oak trees rose within the ballroom of the Hofburg where other guests had congregated only an instant ago. More and more trees appeared until they filled the room with their unnaturally dark, spreading branches, ebony draped with glinting gold and silver leaves.
The rich, distinctive scent of a forest floor rose through her senses.

It's Book Quote Wednesday and the word is TREE. Amallar has trees, many trees. Lots of paragraphs and settings involve trees. Also autumn makes a good time for talk about big changes, as Hans and Dorilian set out to do in this scene from THE GOD SPEAR. #bookqw #WritingCommunity
Left side of image is the book cover of THE GOD SPEAR, book 4 of the Triempery Revelations series by L.L. Stephens. Cover is orange, gold, and red and shows a young woman walking along a country lane toward a distant, strangely shaped hill crowned by antlers.

Right side of image is a text excerpt from THE GOD SPEAR, in which two characters, Hans and Dorilian, begin to discuss a highly improbable and powerful gift.

“The Khelds aren’t going to believe that you want to bargain in good faith just because I say so. They’ll toss me out of the Witan if I come to them with no more than that!”
Dorilian eyed him icily. “If you wanted more than that, you should have stayed in Sordan.”
“But I didn’t. And you know what? I’m glad I didn’t. Because now I know where I stand with my people, not yours. I don’t cling to any nice little dreams that Amallar or the Khelds are going to blindly follow me wherever I lead them. I know that I have to bring them more than what they’ve already got.”
Dorilian leaned his weight upon the bole of the tree. It was a posture so natural to him that Hans could almost take seriously his pretense of contemplation. “And what do these Khelds not have that you would give them?”
     “The Rill.”

Today's word is TREE. Today's #BookQW from Summon the Keeper (DAW Books, Inc. 1998) a contemporary fantasy set in Kingston, Ontario where even though the cat never shuts up, Hell still gets all the best lines. Available wherever you buy ebooks. Shop indie if you can.
The digital cover is in the upper right: a spooky house with things happening in every window (werewolf, bat, fire tentacles) and caution tape over the door. A black and white cat lounges disdainfully on the roof. The background is the house and the quote is in a yellow/orange rectangle.

Thunder cracked, lightning lit up the sky, and it started to rain harder. Down the center of the street, where the reaching leaves of the huge, old trees didn't quite touch, grape-sized drops of water hit the pavement so hard they bounced. On the sidewalk, under the trees, it was ...
     ..not significantly drier.

Oops, think I used the wrong tag. #bookqw books2read.com/plholidaycol... This also gives me room to say this is a bit early since it's only September but it was the easiest story to think of that would have a tree in it. There is also a Thanksgiving story in the collection, but still. Very early.
On the left is the cover of Puppy Love Holiday Collection by C. Coal with two cute puppies in a red pot, one with a poinsettia on its collar.

On the right is the following text:
At last, Christmas arrived, and Danielle drafted Mildred, Mary, and Bree to help her celebrate. They gathered on Christmas morning to bake cookies—butter balls and sugar cookies in the shapes of trees and wreaths—and decorate her house. It was the first Christmas since Danielle’s dad had died four years before that felt like a celebration instead of an ordeal to be suffered through.
She watched Bree open her stocking, thrilled with each little gift—even the pack of gum—and realized how much she’d missed this. The laughter and food and coming together to celebrate.
It made her happy that she’d found friends she could share the holiday with. But sad, too, because it reminded her of what she’d lost and how much she wanted a family of her own. A husband to put the angel on the top of the tree and carve the turkey. Children that could run around the living room with Bree and Sparky.
Unfortunately, that wasn’t likely to happen. She wasn’t the best at meeting men. The minute one showed an interest in her, she started to stammer and mutter about being too busy, all the while wondering what was wrong with this guy if he was interested in her.
Sighing, she pushed those thoughts aside and focused on how grateful she was for what she did have and for being able to give back just a little to the people who’d become such an important part of her life over the past couple of months.

Digital cover upper left with the image of a woman in uniform holding a really big gun that makes the centre piece of the cover expanded on the upper right. Under it, the quote.

Every now and then, she could see the desire to do great things rise in his eyes.
"You want to live on after you die, Staff." He danced his fingers over his touchpad, drawing out a martial melody. "Having done
something that makes it into a song."
Torin didn't so much want Lieutenant Franks to live on after he died as to live on for a good long time, so she smacked that desire down every time she saw it and worried about what would happen should it make an appearance when she wasn't around. The enemy smacked down with considerably more force. And what little she'd heard of their music, sucked.

Right side of image is a text excerpt from SORDANEON:

Nammuor studied Daimonaeris with amusement. “Your husband is not hideous, fire jewel. Shadowed by lesser blood, yes, but not ugly. He’s growing into his looks. Women will eventually find his appearance as appealing as his lineage. Be wary.”
She eyed him venomously. “I will not have to—if we are rid of him.”
He laughed and reached for another sugar feather, this time choosing a different color and flavor. “A year he has promised, so a year shall we have. Let us work on the father, then, and attend to the timing. Deben’s single vice in women is that he prefers young virgins. And thanks in part to your reluctant husband, sweet Sister, you have done a splendid job of keeping your temple pristine.”

It's Book Quote Wednesday and the word is 'appear' Here's an excerpt from The Siege of Druine - and they're going to get a siege whether they want one or not. #bookqw #indiefantasy #writingcommunity 💙🪐📚 The ebook is free on my newsletter: www.andeira.net/newsletter
Front cover of The Siege of Druine and excerpt for Book Quote Wednesday prompt 'appear'

“So what now?” Agazi asked. He was lounging against the wall and appeared completely unconcerned about the fact there was an entire fucking Qidan division camped on their doorstep.
“Now we wait. Either Haki moves or Diago does.”
“And we’re stuck in the middle,” Esar complained. It was an uncomfortable position, trapped between those two powers. Holding the balance.
Alyas shrugged. “He’s not convinced, but we have surprised him. He has doubts. If he hesitates too long, he’s lost, and he knows it.”
For Haki, success meant striking hard and striking fast, taking possession of the Donea before any of its treaty-bound neighbours were even aware Qido had moved. Which meant taking Druine and control of the pass.
Except he didn’t even need to do that. “He could just pin us down here,” Esar pointed out. “We can’t withstand a siege for long.”

"Gentle, wholesome romance of independence and enduring love." ~ BookLife Reviews lindagriffinauthor.com/cherry_creek... #BookQW #HistoricalRomance
Two teenage girls in long dresses, standing in a grassy field. We had been running and laughing and were a little flushed, and my hair, my pale, despised, freshly washed, and unruly hair, was windblown and fluffy. We did not present a ladylike appearance. Andrew stopped short, staring—not at lovely, petite Laura with her honey-colored curls, but at me, plain, freckled, straw-haired Molly, whom he had known all his life.

Today's #BookQW and the word is "appear". This one is from the second book in the Rider's Revenge series by Alessandra Clarke. This series is available on most major retailers. Links to the complete trilogy available here: books2read.com/rr-trilogy/
On the left is the cover for Rider's Rescue by Alessandra Clarke with a young woman on a pegasus.

On the right is the following text:
The Trickster must have pinched Fallion, because he reared, almost throwing her off his back, biting at the air with his teeth.
She leaned forward, stroking his neck. "Calm, micora. Calm. Don't let him get to you."
She heard the Trickster move up and down the line, taunting and pinching. The muffled shouts and cries echoed back to her.
They couldn't survive this. Not for a day. Someone would break and run.
"Stay calm," she shouted. "Stay where you are. Don't let him scare you."
But the sounds of panic were rising, the shouts growing more frantic.
They couldn't wait until night. They just couldn't.
What happened when the Trickster grew bored of pinches and slaps?
What happened when one of the Riders tried to run?
When she tried to run?
The fog shoved its way down her throat, blanketed her eyes. She couldn't do it. She couldn't spend another moment like this.
She leaned low over Fallion's neck, something Herin had said about the horses prickling in her mind. If Kriger was sent by the Trickster, then…Then maybe Fallion was sent by Father Sun. "Micora, somewhere out there the sun is shining. Can you…Can you use it? To banish this fog? Can you shine like you do when you fly?"
She waited, not daring to breathe, hoping she was right as the sounds of panicked men and horses continued.
At first, nothing happened. The fog was as cold and oppressive as ever.
But then, slowly, Fallion started to glow. First, he shone like dawn's gentle golden light. And then brighter like the sun as it just starts to appear, its tentative rays reaching for the sky. And finally like the sun at midday, full and bright and clear, blinding in its brilliance.
The fog tried to fight back, to thicken and attack, but he shone brighter still, like the light of a hundred suns. A thousands suns.
K'lrsa closed her eyes, crying out in pain...

Today's word for Book Quote Wednesday is 'appear' #BookQW and is from one of my favorite scenes from Los Nefilim. Diago is struggling to explain his relationship with Miquel to his 6y/o son and Miquel isn't helping at all ... awfulagent.com/ebooks/los-n...
A cover shot of Los Nefilim (dark blue cover with a teal circle of sigils surrounding a scorpion) by T. Frohock with the text: Rafael’s only encounter with the Church appeared to be in the form of the rather daunting specter of Sister Benita. Diago hoped she hadn’t inflicted too much damage on his son’s worldview, but until he was sure, it was best he and Miquel were circumspect about their relationship.

Rafael ran his finger along the chain. “But if you love Miquel, why don’t you wear your ring on your finger?”

“It’s complicated.” Diago unclasped the hook and slipped the ring from the chain.

Rafael touched the silver band. “Miquel wears his ring.”

From the kitchen, Miquel sang, “Yes, he does!”

Rafael looked up at Diago and frowned. The child was genuinely trying to understand. “Is Miquel your wife?”

Miquel’s laughter rang out in the kitchen.

Book Quote Wednesday's word is 'appear' #BookQW Dan does his best not to look out of place at Fin’s sister’s wedding, but honestly he’d rather be facing supernatural monsters... The ebook is a UK Kindle 99p deal through September and will be price-matched elsewhere. www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...
Cover art by Ben Baldwin shows a creature crouching in a low tunnel entrance lined with grey stones and partly hidden by green undergrowth and white flowers. The creature has pale skin covered in sparse black hair and it looks a bit like an ape, a bit like a bear, and completely unlike either of those.

Book extract reads: At least I had an excuse to sit at the far end of the polished wooden seat, where sturdy round pillars separated the middle of the church from the side aisles. So I wouldn’t block anyone’s view. I was definitely the tallest person at this wedding, and I probably had the widest shoulders.
Zan stood between me and Helen, grinning without a care in the world. A sylph can look like whoever they want to, but today Zan would stick to the appearance they had chosen when they first met me, Fin and Blanche. Introduced to everyone as Blanche’s boyfriend, he was six inches shorter than me, wiry with tanned skin, a shaven head and bright blue eyes. He had materialised when I arrived at the church with Conn and Seamus. Conn had said he looked like a model on the cover of some glossy magazine. GQ, he suggested with a grin, or should that be Green Man’s Quarterly? Like I say, the groom was perfectly relaxed.
