Now out in its final, extended form: doi.org/10.1016/j.yn... We asked how cortical #ASPECTS regions map onto functional brain networks. The short answer: they do — but not quite neatly enough to make life easy. We hope this adds a piece to the discussion on network mapping in MCA #stroke.

Substantial improvements in research interpretability & reproducibility are often hard. Sometimes the improvements are easy. (The underlying idea is older & easy, but convincing people is sometimes the hard part) I'm happy to have contributed to this easy and now widely accessible improvement.

Have you ever felt like something was missing from your #fmri results? Have you been worried about potential reproducibility issues? Well, this new @natmethods.nature.com article with 40+ coauthors shows how the simple change to transparent thresholding helps both. Go Figure! rdcu.be/B4tikBETdQZa
A comparison of old and new thresholding approaches for fMRI data. The newer, transparent thresholding allows for interpreting context, more complete modeling, a reduction of biases and an increase in meaningful content. This all leads to more accurate interpretations and improved reproducibility evaluations.

Transparency matters when reporting results in neuroimaging! arxiv.org/abs/2504.07824 This could be a landmark in setting publishing standards for interpretability/reproducibility. Stellar work by @afni-pt.bsky.social @fmri-today.bsky.social @brightmg.bsky.social @gangchen6.bsky.social et al.
Opaque thresholding hides information: context around statistically significant clusters is removed, treats subthreshold regions as having no activity. Transparent thresholding shows information: context around significant clusters is displayed, can observe relative importance of subthreshold regions.

The mind craves binaries: good or bad, true or false, on or off. It’s tidy. It’s comforting. But the world rarely plays along. Reality tends to unfold in gradients, not in absolutes. And so does statistical evidence. Data analysis doesn’t speak in black and white, but in shades of uncertainty.

Figure caption: key goal of research in the brain sciences is to capture relationships between the brain and behavior. When studying these brain–behavior relationships, it is crucial to recognize that sociodemographic factors, such as sex, gender, race, ethnicity, education, religion, spirituality, health, language, environment, age and socioeconomic status (among others), can independently and interdependently influence these reciprocal associations.
