As someone in a STEM discipline, I really abhor the kind of messaging that Mark describes. The messengers aren’t people who actually care about STEM. It’s really a shorthand for “do something practical, focus on your relation to the labor market”.

The #ADoorableThursday portal that leads to the station buffet tea rooms in Barter Books, Alnwick, the incredible secondhand bookshop in the former railway station. #ArchitecturalIllustration #pen #drawing #Artshare
Rows of bookshelves leading the eye to a doorway with an arched fanlight with letters proclaiming the room beyond the door to be a station buffet. It is in fact the tearoom of a secondhand bookshop that was once a railway station.

The story of the bosses' revolt comes down to their experience, in 2020, of helplessly watching the labor-income line go up — and resolving, right then and there, to make sure that never happened again.

It really is striking how many authoritarian states have ended up in this exact same place, where the leader seizes control of scientific inquiry. Lysenkoism in the Soviet Union, Aryan Physics in the Third Reich, Great Leap Forward (also related to Lysenko) in China.

The thing about trying not to pick a side is that the nazis *instantly recognize* which side you picked. They immediately identify you as an ally. They know exactly what side you're on. It doesn't fool the victims, it doesn't fool the Nazis, the only people it could possibly fool is centrists.

She is smiling winsomelyTrump leaving his meeting with Irish President Catherine Connolly, looking even more beaten down. He's wearing the face he wore after meeting privately with Putin in Helsinki. Jennifer Nelson’s entry to this year’s Minnesota State Fair crop art
A localized version of Guernica with a loon at the center and a person holding an ICE OUT sign

“My piece was inspired by Picasso's Guernica, a work that was his response to the Nazi's bombing of the Basque town. I thought there was a fitting parallel between these incidents about the high price paid by ordinary people when aggressive regimes try out new tactics of war, as well as a fitting juxtaposition of the darkness of living such an experience and the light we shone through it in our own resistance and care for one another. The patterns near Renee Good and Alex Pretti’s mouths are actually their last words in Morse code: ‘I’m not mad at you,’ and ‘Are you okay?’”
