For those whose political work consist mainly of electoral campaigns in blue districts, the terrain for fighting fascism can appear to be "elsewhere." But by attending to conditions that make fascism flourish, as @prisonculture.bsky.social does here, we can see there's so much work to be done here.

What I find really promising about it is that instead of being subject to a strict public/private binary, it allows admins of a particular community to create elements that run along a spectrum between entirely private and entirely public. One way it does so is by allowing different kinds of feeds.

Both substance and style: transforming a capitalist economy into a socialist one requires meeting BLM's divest-invest demands. But meeting these demands requires movement-building practices that make the abolition of policing, prisons, and criminalization central to many, many more white people.

Excerpt of two paragraphs from "The Democrats’ 'Woke' Panic and the Left’s Response," an interview by Hammer & Hope of Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor. Both paragraphs below are comments by Taylor; I've highlighted the second of the two paragraphs.

"I think that's really the question that isn't being asked in what we might call the woke wars, which AOC uncorked with her comment about "Woke 1" being crazy. In one part of the left, there's a defensive reaction; people are asking if AOC and others are dismissing wholesale movements against racism and attempts to deal with the issue of policing. And another part of the left seems to be saying that there were elements of those movement struggles that were useful, but there was also a way in which the practice of politics was alienating.

"It's important to untangle what we're talking about: Are we talking about the political demands from that period? Or are we talking about a style of politics that did become alienating? Many of the things that Mitchell was pointing out in his 2022 article were genuine. The role of neoliberal identity politics in that period meant that it was common sense in movements to believe that people of color should have the last word in any debate, regardless of what they were saying. Plus there was a tendency toward maximalist demands. Anyone who wasn't for the abolition of police without qualification was for the forces of capitalism. Where's the space for political debate and discussion? For allowing people to engage one another with the intention of persuading people? For making an argument and whatever the outcome of that argument still finding ways to work together? These are some of the questions that still need to be discussed. But the way that this discussion has emerged over the summer, it feels as if people on the left have retreated into camps instead of actually taking up the issues."

I agree with all 4 changes to Leftist electoral strategy—at least as applied to statewide races—recommended here, but to me by far the most important point is #3. We must steadily rely less on canvassing by strangers and more on building relational breadth. Relational is how we best money at scale.

Thoughtful piece here by @aasthauprety.bsky.social. In particular, I appreciate this nuanced perspective on the challenge of building a multi-racial membership in DSA.

One can definitely engage in good-faith analyses of why a movement might look a certain way and how it can be more inclusive—NYC's Commie Corridor comprises gentrifying neighborhoods, it's true, and DSA members tend to be college-educated. The struggle to build a multiracial, working-class base is real and comes from both racism and prejudice as well as decades of antisocialist propaganda in the US.

But when it's actually productive criticism, it's an internal convo of committed leftists, not wreckers from the political center. (i.e., once your analysis turns into ..and that's why we shouldn't support socialism"—I will stop listening. & ) From Boggs & Boggs:

Early Voting turnout has remained steadily just under 50% of last year's; the cumulative rate through Day 8 is now 45%. It's hard to get most people to care about state government except for a brief period after something bad has happened. But now thru Tue is a big chance to make it much better.

We can achieve these things if we demand leadership in Albany that prioritizes working families over the comfort of the wealthy and well connected. It requires the political will to demand the wealthiest New Yorkers and the largest corporations to pay their fair share so we can invest in housing, public transit, healthcare, and childcare here at home.

Our community cannot afford incremental change. We need bold action that lowers costs, strengthens public services, and ensures that government works for the people who rely on it most.

Syracuse is worth fighting for. Central New York is worth investing in. And the only way we move forward is together.

I grew up in the projects. Cops pressed me and harassed me just for being a young Black man. Wisdom: "What we have not yet learned, not at scale, not on purpose, is how to make grief + love + joy into a practice instead of an escape. Joy is not the thing you reach for to avoid the hard work. Joy + grief aren’t the escape hatch. They’re the loom. It is how you keep reweaving togetherness..."

We have learned how to be angry, and some of us, the lucky ones, are learning how to rest. What we have not yet learned, not at scale, not on purpose, is how to make grief and love and joy into a practice instead of an escape. Joy is not the thing you reach for to avoid the hard work. Joy and grief aren’t the escape hatch. They’re the loom. It is how you keep reweaving togetherness when the fabric keeps getting torn, how you keep healing people back into belonging when belonging is exactly the thing this moment is trying to destroy. We don’t dance to forget. We dance to remember we are still each other’s. We don’t celebrate to look away. We celebrate to stay in relationship with what we love.

That is the work of the next year.
