The number of people who desire changes may be many, but the number of people willing to strive for any such change through sustained work is relatively few. In this sense, everyone doing sustained work belongs to a minority, and to strive for change is always to be in a minority within a majority.

The demand to prosecute federal agents is problematic because it advocates a carceral approach to address a carceral problem. The other demands, however, are justified and constructive. Publicly pressuring one's elected allies to use governing power to try to stop police collusion with ICE is good.

National Coming Out Day is way deeper than a social media trend. October 11th was chosen because it’s the anniversary of the 1987 March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights.
[Photo of QUEER AND HOW WE GOT HERE page 36]
“In the 1980s, the AIDS epidemic began ravaging the gay community. Gay organizations made heroic efforts to care for the sick, but the Reagan administration’s response was murderously slow. Being out, loud, and public was a way to cut through stigma, media silence, and government neglect.”
[reproduction of a poster which reads “Fighting For Our Lives: An AIDS Candlelight March, May 2, 1983. It’s illustrated with a drawing of a man in a sweater crying and holding up a candle.]
“In 1987, more than half a million people joined the March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. The AIDS Memorial Quilt visualized the tragedy with grave-sized panels, sewn by loved ones, spread over the National Mall.”
[Drawing of people walking around the AIDS quilt. One of the panels is visibly labeled “Rock Hudson.”]
[Drawing of Narrator-Hazel, commenting on the page.]
“The quilt was first displayed with 1,920 panels and has since expanded to almost 50,000 panels—a fraction of the mounting deaths.”

“More men were ‘outed’ by illness than had ever come out before—even celebrities at the highest echelons.[Photo of QUEER AND HOW WE GOT HERE page 37]
“The march also introduced the nation to ACT UP, a group fighting for their lives for treatments to be developed faster. Their motto: ‘United in anger and committed to direct action to end the AIDS crisis.’”
[Illustration of a bloc of ACT UP marchers carrying a banner that says “SILENCE = DEATH.” Next to them, a guy in a wheelchair holds a sign saying “ACT UP: AIDS Coalition To Unleash Power.” Other marchers hold up protest signs with Reagan’s face and “AIDSGATE” written underneath, and a sign with a pink triangle, evoking the holocaust. Together, the marchers shout: “Act up! Fight Back! Fight AIDS!”]

“Following the march, activists formed ACT UP direct-action chapters all over the country.”

“Jean O’Leary and Robert Eichberg proposed National Coming Out Day for October 11, the anniversary of the march.
[Drawing of Jean O’Leary talking]
“As long as the overwhelming majority of our community remains closeted, we will continue to be dismissed.”

[Drawing of Robert Eichberg talking]
“With Coming Out Day happening, we can expect this country to go through some real self-examination.”

When I was at Princeton, the reigning assumption in its philosophy dept about the relation b/t language-use + semantics was that the former "represented" the latter. Today, more agree that meaning derives from use; a similar lesson must be now learned about money's politically derived content.

Can we be honest that so called 'wokeness' meant Black people demanding full social personhood and refusing to be silent about getting murdered/harmed by the state? So yes, that is more threatening to many in this country than is fascism. I think that's been clear.

Whether NYS' governing-power Left can build such alignment in a non-recession year will likely depend on whether it can address the concerns of enough potential allies to constitute a Dem conference majority. Next year will be our best chance to try to bridge this gap in decades.
090
Bright D Limm 임대중 @bdlimm.myatproto.social · 11/10/2026
By picking up 7 Assembly seats, the governing-power Left has earned the privilege of being able to attempt to address this challenge. So far, this level of alignment between Left and sometime-allied Assembly members has been achieved only under extraordinary external conditions (i.e., recessions).
160
Bright D Limm 임대중 @bdlimm.myatproto.social · 11/10/2026
In order to cohere the Assembly-member bloc needed to pass #TaxTheRich next year, we'll likely need to address all 3 of these types of concerns among 22–28 Dem Assembly members. And addressing these concerns adequately can only be done in a space with candor and without shaming.
150
Bright D Limm 임대중 @bdlimm.myatproto.social · 11/10/2026
These potential allies' concerns include— (1) Re-election (esp. in purple or centrist-blue districts); (2) Genuine (though incorrect) economically based worries; and (3) Genuine (and correct) worries about political backlash from regional economic oligarchs with quasi-monopsony employment power.
160
Bright D Limm 임대중 @bdlimm.myatproto.social · 11/10/2026
If the history of the last 2 successful attempts to tax the rich in NYS is a prudent guide, then the answer lies in creating internal organizing spaces for Assembly members where non-socialist/Left members can candidly raise their economic + political concerns and have them adequately addressed.
150
Bright D Limm 임대중 @bdlimm.myatproto.social · 11/10/2026
It's possible to build this Assembly bloc next year. To do so, however, the Left must in turn make allies of, rather than alienate, the 22–28 non-Left, sometime-ally Assembly members needed to affix #TaxTheRich as an Assembly budget bottom-line demand for FY 2028. How can we achieve this alliance?
140
Bright D Limm 임대중 @bdlimm.myatproto.social · 11/10/2026
NYS does not have 52 Leftist Assembly members; we have more like 25–30, depending on the bill. Put another way: in order for 22–28 more Dem Assembly members to champion #TaxTheRich next year, the Left will need to internally organize + win over many Assembly members who dislike or detest the Left.
152
Bright D Limm 임대중 @bdlimm.myatproto.social · 11/10/2026
Within NYS' 150-seat Assembly, the Democratic conference has 103 members. In practice, support from a majority of this conference is the threshold required to establish a budget bottom-line. This means we will need at least 52 supporters (or 53, if Dems win 1-2 more Assembly seats this November).
150
Bright D Limm 임대중 @bdlimm.myatproto.social · 11/10/2026
This year, Kathy Hochul was able to prevent NY's governing-power Left from passing #TaxTheRich because too many Dem Assembly members were unwilling to hold the line. Next year, with 7 new allies in the Assembly, we can win it. But to make it happen, we'll likely need unprecedented alignment. 🧵

Legal infrastructure is also where white supremacy's most insidious operations reside. It's how— • Medicare stays not for all • Housing is not a human right • Schools remain funded by local taxes • Money is created mostly by private banks • Labor remains taxed way more than capital —and so on.
