People need to be crystal clear about something: The requirement that the government ANSWER to a court on the legal basis for detaining someone is literally the core liberty right (habeas corpus). If the government says they don’t have to do that bc “national security,” YOU can be disappeared.

Precisely this. The inability of our leaders to solve this collective action problem has been profoundly disappointing. This is the essence of politics. Together you’re strong. Separate, you’ll get picked off. Hiding only means you get picked off later. Who’s building the coalitions?

UNREAL. ICE implies in a sworn declaration that MOST of the Venezuelans sentenced to hard labor in a brutal Central American prison without charge or trial or so much as a cursory hearing had never been convicted or even charged with ANY CRIME whatsoever, not even a trivial one, anywhere, ever!

This view resonates. For most of their actions it seems clear they acted first and spoke to lawyers later because you can see the legal arguments attempt to retroactively come up with some sort of rationale. It's just that for this one no even slightly plausible explanation is possible to concoct.

It’s not time to debate whether this is different. It’s time to do something about how this time is different. That or wait your turn to end up in a literal gulag, maybe the one we’re using in El Salvador. Zero sign Trump feels limited in who he can do this to

From the end of this morning’s WP article on Trump’s economic plans everybody’s mad about. 1) Nobody — not even powerful rich CEOs — contradict Trump to his face because they’re afraid of being yelled at. 2) Their strategy is hoping they can survive this until he leaves.
Last week, the president met with corporate leaders assembled by the Yale CEO Caucus and the Business Roundtable. Many are deeply skeptical that global supply chains developed over years can or should be quickly unwound.
But their closed-door sessions with the president were devoid of fireworks.
"They don't want to get Zelensky-ed," said the Republican, who attended one of the meetings, referring to Trump's public humiliation of the Ukrainian president during a recent Oval Office meeting.
Some business leaders hope to redirect Trump from attacking Canada and Mexico to a more narrow focus on combating China's trade practices. Foreign companies already see their presence in China as under threat, given President Xi Jinping's effort to boost his country's self-reliance. So they are prepared to see Trump erect further trade barriers on Chinese goods, if they can salvage their manufacturing footprint closer to the United States, this person said.
The president's mercurial nature and limited time in office also make them cautious about dramatic changes in their supply chains or operations. Some are hoping to run out the clock on Trump's economic revolution.
"The president's not going to be around forever," said another Republican business executive. "In four years, you have a different administration."

They claim they can snatch people up, put them on planes, and deport them to a country run by an authoritarian, where those people will be forced to work slave labor at an inhumane prison. All without due process, and in defiance of federal courts. The hypotheticals are over. This is the nightmare.

That seems pretty close. Conservative conspiracies play a huge role - wokeness/DEI paranoia, fears of white replacement, science is tyranny, belief that US is victim of Bretton Woods institutions. All these fears are untethered from reality so the right just spirals further to extreme positions.

Holy crap. The DOJ is arguing that the President can unilaterally deport anyone he wants without ANY statutory authority, just on his inherent authority as President over national security. That is a terrifying claim to make and not one that has ever been recognized before in US history.
Beyond the statute, the President’s inherent Article II authority is plainly
violated by the district court’s order. As a function of his inherent Article II authority
to protect the nation, the President may determine that TdA represents a significant
risk to the United States, that it is intertwined and advancing the interests of a foreign
government in a manner antithetical to the interests of the United States, and that its
members should be summarily removed from this country as part of that threat.

Authoritarians govern through fear, not legislation. The simple fear of what they would do in certain situations can push even the opposition to capitulate. That’s success for them. We lose when we fold due to a hypothetical. We win when we challenge the REALITY that is hurting working people.

NEW: White House says the arrest and deportation of student activist & legal US resident, Mahmoud Khalil, is a blueprint for more. The final line here is chilling. The White House specifically says Khalil was not breaking the law. No evidence, no due process, no crime. He was just disappeared.
Indeed, a White House official told The Free Press that the basis for targeting Khalil is being used as a blueprint for investigations against other students.

Khalil is a "threat to the foreign policy and national security interests of the United States," said the official, noting that this calculation was the driving force behind the arrest. "The allegation here is not that he was breaking the law," said the official.
