Mayor Ruddock says that this process (forcing a citywide vote on a 100% affordable housing project after a 4 year slog) will be beneficial to the community (for whomst, mayor?) She says that this will be a positive, as long as people don't "play the race card." GOOD LORD.

AOC: I said this a couple of weeks ago: I would not be surprised if, when ICE funding started up again, we would start to see more civilian deaths at the hands of ICE. And that’s exactly what has happened. We didn’t see things like this happening with the same degree when we froze ICE funding.

I wrote this week in the Mercury News about why downtown's energy depends on having more people actually living here, and what the state can do to help make that happen.

Tordillos: Downtown San Jose has everything except neighbors
A California law, AB 2074, would streamline the approval process for downtown housing projects, making it faster and cheaper to build new homes close to jobs and transit.

If Republicans have had a belated realization that gerrymandering is bad, they should work with Dems to ban it entirely. I suspect though that they think it’s just bad when it happens to them. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...
I suspect, however, that Republicans have not had this realization, and that they simply believe that disenfranchising Democrats is good but disenfranchising Republicans is bad. If that’s the case, then this race to the bottom will continue indefinitely. On Monday, Trump called the new maps a “shameful effort” to “silence the voices of Virginia conservatives.” He either didn’t remember or didn’t care that he had set off this whole process by demanding that liberals in Texas and other Republican-controlled states be similarly silenced. In fact, the president complained in a post today that the election had been “rigged” by virtue of the fact that all the votes—including mail-in ballots—had been counted.

As we mourn the loss of Rod Diridon Sr., I know that many of us are reflecting on his legacy as a public transit icon here in Santa Clara County. I wanted to share something about him many of you may not know.
I know that I join many of you across Santa Clara County and beyond in mourning the loss of Rod Diridon Sr., an icon of public transit whose legacy was cemented when Diridon Station was renamed in his honor.

Rod was my sponsor when I joined the Rotary Club of San José. It was a joy to get to know Rod, and last year he shared a story with me that many of you may not know. When he was a rising political star on the County Board of Supervisors and being approached by folks urging him to run for higher office, he had to make a choice: stick to his principles or further his political career.

Rod stuck to his principles. In 1979, he voted to pass a controversial ordinance that banned discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. The backlash was immediate: anti-LGBTQ+ groups rallied attacks on Rod and the other Supervisors and put a measure on the ballot to repeal the ordinance that Santa Clara County voters approved by 40 points. A few months after the vote, Rod ran for state senate and was defeated by a Republican. For many politicians, that could have been career ending. But as he said, “If you don’t vote your conscience, you’re not worth a damn.”

And as we all know, his impact did not end there. Thank you, Rod, for your lifetime of service to Santa Clara County and your tireless work to make the lives of our residents better. Thank you for being an example of putting principles over politics.

Women are always made to tolerate the intolerable. Repeatedly. These women are fighters for working people. My time in the labor movement means so much to me and this was a betrayal. But one man is not a movement. And that man’s name doesn’t belong at the heart of our downtown.

A lovely watercolor pinup illustration of a transfemme angel with brown skin, curly brown hair (shaded with purple tones), deep blue wings, and a flat chest. She's reclined on her side, crushing a pink rose with a blue gloved hand and blue stockings, with petals falling between an open translucent robe. Vibrant pink orchids are painted around her, with a blue lace pattern filling the background.

15 phases of the moon captures between March 2nd at 12:37 and March 3rd at 4:36AM; the moon goes full full to crescent, then red and back towards crescent. the foreground is of a joshua tree and rocks with light pollution; the light pollution is from the original foreground. no milky way due to it being on the other side of the sky

The big one: fundamentally, sprawl is a wealth transfer from dense, productive urban cores to sparse fringe developments. It costs exponentially more to provide fire, police, and trash services to 50 homes spread over 10 miles than 50 homes on one city block. Sprawl is subsidized. It has to be.
