📱 Tumbled, stumbled, stayed sustainable. New EU Ecodesign and Energy Labelling laws have entered into force. Your smartphone or tablet must last longer, be easier to fix, and use less energy. Here’s what changes for you ↓
An overhead shot shows a smartphone displaying an energy label, placed on a European Union flag. The energy label is prominently displayed on the phone screen, featuring the word "ENERG" in blue at the top right. Below this is a QR code and the text "MODEL IDENTIFIER." On the left, a bar graph with letters A through G illustrates energy efficiency, with "A" at the top in dark green, descending to "G" in red. A large "B" indicates the appliance's energy class. Below this, a battery or power symbol is accompanied by "15h 35min." Further down, three icons are arranged horizontally, followed by "XY00x" and "IP68." The EU flag, with its yellow stars on a blue background, fills the rest of the frame.

This article is going to turn me into the Joker. Literary style is not a puzzle you solve to get a little information treat 😩😩😩
But A.I. can also simplify: if you’re struggling with the opening of “Bleak House,” you can ask for it to be rewritten using easier, more modern English. “Gas looming through the fog in divers places in the streets, much as the sun may, from the spongey fields, be seen to loom by husbandman and ploughboy,” Dickens wrote. Claude takes a more direct path: “Gas lamps glow dimly through the fog at various spots throughout the streets, much like how the sun might appear to farmers working in misty fields.”

Agree. I will never understand the desperate wish of tech promoters and AI users to avoid doing the things that make us human. Writing is hard; that’s the point. Art is difficult to make & worth it. Reading can be a challenge; it’s how to learn. Why delegate these to soulless AI? To do what instead?

As usual in these cases, one man's personal ambition, amorality, and damaging family dynamics mean that thousands must die. As with Putin. As with Trump. As with RFK jnr As with any dictator you care to mention. There has to be a better way than this.

Repost with Alt Text. ...bc yeah, THIS.
Tumblr post by user kalira , dated Oct 20, 2024:
I say this very gently and with much love, and I say it not only as a writer myself but as someone who has been privy to many 'but how can they not know that work is amazing! 1 love it! I gushed about it to every friend I have and recced in x, y, z servers and [...]'

The writer or artist doesn't know this.

They have no way of knowing that you found their work beautiful and lifechanging or even just a bright spot on a bad day or that you think about it every day or that you told all your friends about it, and those things are great but we have no way of knowing them! You may not be doing it intentionally, but you're excluding the writer or artist from the community feeling of fandom that you are carrying on (that is so great! fandom is a community! continue to talk and play!) even with their work.
Please, please just drop a line even that is "oh gosh I absolutely love this work, I screamed to every one of my
friends about it when I first read/saw it!" even if you don't
have the spoons to share more of the specifics that made you flail at your friends or what you said in private. (Though if you do, we will love you forever for it.)

I'll say it over and over. I do not believe in gate keeping. I do not believe in pulling up the ladder. I believe in kicking the wall down like the Kool-Aid man, and making room as I go for those who come next. Just because it was hard for me, doesn't mean it has to be hard for anyone else.

There is no justification whatsoever for the US or UK to provide any support, material or diplomatic, for Israel's attack on Iran. It is a war of aggression, clearly contrary to international law.

Johnny Marr speaks out about Kneecap and Glastonbury - totally agree with this position
johnnymarrgram
.. •
After learning that calls have been made for Kneecap to be censored during their Glastonbury set, I think it's important that I make my own position clear.
I've played Glastonbury many times and the festival has always had a political aspect. It was founded as a place of free expression and political activism and it's a fact that I agreed to play there with The Smiths in 1984 purely because to do so at the time was a political act.
We are living through very troubling times, but for anyone who's been interested in me or my music over the last 40 years, I feel like my political stance has always been very clear.
Oppression fears artistic expression. I respect all musicians who use their platform to speak out against injustice, who promote compassion and equality and give voice to the voiceless.
I stand with my audience and fellow musicians who call for an immediate end to the atrocities and a free Palestine.
Johnny Marr
