I just watched the video. What he actually said, was quote: "If the Democrats win, you will have an economic depression much like 1929. If the Republicans win, you will each have $5000 in your pocket." Amazing how he can take my breath away even after all these years.

I mean, would this be the @nytimes.com coverage if a Democratic politician had told people to pledge allegiance to them personally and said they had to commit election fraud to seem the Democrats win in the fall?
NY Times "Midterm Elections" section showing a bunch of bland headlines, none of which mention trump's pledge and exhortation to voter fraud.

Oh my god the dietician who is telling everyone in the White House to only eat steak and sauerkraut doesn't wipe his ass.
To O’Mara, the diet is not just a temporary means of losing weight but a way to eat for good. He has been doing it for 10 years, and credits it with turning his life around. At one point in our conversation he pulled up the Bristol Stool Chart, which ranges from Type 1 (“separate, hard pellets”) to Type 7 (“watery, no solid pieces”). O’Mara is consistently delivering Type 4 (“smooth, soft, like a snake”), with pointed ends, indicative of healthy rectal function, he told me. “When you start eating healthy, you don’t need toilet paper,” he claimed. “Animals in the wild have no residual stool on their anus.” He described a proper bowel movement to me this way: odorless, wipe-free, over in three to seven seconds and “nearly orgasmic.”

“I could have a bowel movement behind a sheet at a dinner party in the corner of the room,” he said, “and nobody would know.”

Extraordinary detail in the new book on Trump's second term administration
After they wrapped up their research, the authors sat down with Trump to check their facts. He drifted on to why his "love affair" with Venezuela went back to his years of owning the Miss Universe pageant, which featured many beautiful Venezuelans. What he really wanted to relate was a conversation he had had with a historian whose verdict was that Trump was "without question, the most powerful man the planet [had] ever known - by a long way." The historian had sent Trump a two-page memo from which he read. "If President Trump is the American Eagle, then William the Conqueror was merely a sparrow." Curious about the identity of the historian, Swan tracked down a golf caddie in Florida, who confessed a passion for history.

Cory Doctorow was interviewed by Anna Foster on BBC Radio 4 Today on the topic of AI. I've captured a transcript of the questions here in a short thread (with the help of Google AI voice-to-text. Good AI, thank-you.) 1/5
AF: We could spend the whole of the rest of the day talking about AI but sometimes we need focus…

CD: Oh God, must we?

AF: We must, we must and while we decided to focus on this idea of a crisis of control, do you think that there is one?

CD: I think AI is the money-losing-est thing the human race has ever done, I think it's grossly oversold and I think that the capital markets have lost their minds because of the confluence of large tech monopolies that have saturated their markets and need to convince investors that they can keep growing despite the fact that they have 90% market shares and the fact that they have a large customer base of bosses who are just infinitely excited at the prospect of firing mouthy workers who know how to do things that they don't know how to do and replacing them with software that compliantly does whatever it's told.

tl;dr: Alabama's ability to administer a new congressional map disenfranchising Black voters has been complicated by the fact that Alabama is celebrating Jefferson Davis's birthday today.
Jeff Elrod, the Director of Elections for Alabama’s Secretary of State, testified
at the preliminary injunction hearing on May 22, 2026, that voter reassignments for
the 2023 Plan in Alabama’s voter registration database could not begin until May 27
and must be completed by tomorrow, June 2. App.123, 136–37, 139, 167, 179. In fact,
June 2 itself appears to be too late: Mr. Elrod testified, “The vendor has
communicated to us that once the absentee process begins and absentee ballot is
issued [sic], that is when the records are locked. The first day for absentee voting for
the June 16th runoff is June the 2nd.” App.139. If absentee ballots are issued the
morning of June 2, then all changes must be completed by today, June 1. And state
and county administrative offices are closed today, June 1, to celebrate the birthday
of Jefferson Davis.1 This leaves a few hours on an Alabama holiday to complete voter
reassignment for the 2023 Plan
