illiterate clowns. how something this simple escapes headline editors is emblematic of the nyt’s deep rot.

NYT headline reads: ICE Calls Detainees the “Worst of the Worst.” The Data Shows Otherwise

Data is a plural noun, goddamnit. “Show” modifies a plural noun, but these mouthbreathers apparently didn’t attend high school English class.

On #IndigenousPeoplesDay, I recommend one of the most important books of the 21st century, or of any time, about America. Rarely can a novel change your brain like this. Tommy Orange is a living treasure.

the fire gets closer; the applause gets louder.

Lars Iyer, from the novel Wittgenstein Jr.:

“There's a fire backstage, he says. The clown comes out to warn the audience. Laughter and applause. They think it's a joke!
The clown repeats his warning. The fire grows hotter; the applause grows louder. That's how the world will end, Wittgenstein says: to general applause, from halfwits who think it's a joke.”

this is the most trenchant and timely piece i’ve read in years

Quote from Mike Masnick’s piece:

It is also, to an immense extent, the disease of a generation-the generation that grew up online, that learned to mistake engagement for truth, that confused being heard with being right. This is as true of suburban millennials as it is of rural boomers. It is the disease of the algorithmically poisoned.
